  • this album is great! I would buy this album and wild honey if I had the money

  • They should name this "In Blue Hawaii" not little pad actually~

  • what amazin' things can "pod" only develop

  • Rock On, Brian!

  • This pretty much was THE inspiration for Animal Collective's Sung Tongs album.

  • don't get me wrong. i love this album. especially after hearing the the smile sessions and learning all the stuff that was going on for them at this at the time. but really i don't get why the other beach boys thought that SMiLe was so weird and then came out with something way weirder. this is one of the oddest albums ever, and compared to what i've heard on the extremely accessible smile sessions, this is quite a lot like what one of them said. "a bunt instead of a home run"

  • For me, the worst of The BBs is worse than the worst of The Bs. However I feel the best of The BBs is better than the best of The Bs. Overall, in terms of consistency the Beatles were a 'better' band. I just prefer listening to the Beach Boys. :)

  • It's little gems like this that make Smiley Smile a wonderful album.

  • The Laughing portion was The 'Boys, high on Acid, according to David Leaf's Liners in this Two-Fer! They were, litrally, lying on the floor, because they were too stoned to stand up,so,they done their vocal lying down! Imagine THAT scene!

  • My friend completely ruined this song for me by pointing out the laugh at 12 seconds sounds like Peter Griffin. And I probably just ruined it for all of you as well.

  • i hear a liddo bit of "love to say da da da" in this song :)

  • Who laughs in the beginning?

  • What a brilliant song

  • This message is about harmonizing. I was in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, and in the interactive booths, I played some songs, including 2 where I had harmonizing in mind: this one and "Do You Wanna Dance" (Mamas & Papas). On youtube regarding the latter song, I just pointed out that after leaving Cleveland, I was heading to Toledo for this year's Four Freshmen convention. To some people, it would look odd for R&R museum to be so close in time to attending 4 Freshmen.

  • I like the way Brian puts it "It's God's music and I am just the messenger" I agree with him.

  • I LOVE THIS why the hell do people listen to the jonas brothers and justin ''beaver'' anyways well i shouldnt call him beaver because thats insulting to beavers

  • im 105 and i love this!

  • 3 people dont have a litle pad in hawaii and probably listen to justin bieiber

  • What do you think the musical theory of the click is?

    Marvelous tune.

  • Paul M & Brian W were born mere hours apart

  • What's wrong with liking both The Beatles and The Beach Boys and saying there both amazing bands? :D

  • @MaccaBeatles Truth.

  • I would love this song as a Coda of the original "Smile"

  • Randy Newman stole the melody for short people from the beach boys

    at 0:17

  • I wonder if this song inspired Trevor, Sam, Zach, Timmy, and Darren to alter this melody and use it as their intro for their show. (The Whitest Kids U'Know) Lol.

  • @BladesOfAltair4Ezio holy shit i was literally thinking the same thing.

  • ha... fun and easy to dig. Wanna hear it again immediately so it must be pretty good.

  • Idiotic stuff!

  • PLEASE READ: IF U WANT TO HEAR SMiLE by THE BEACH BOYS, NOT BRIAN WILSON, GO 2 MY CHANNEL AND GO TO MY PLAYLISTS AND SELECT THE ONE THAT SAYS "Smile 1967(SMiLE)" it contains original recordings by the Beach Boys

  • I love both the Beatles and Beach Boys equally.

  • beach boys is where is at. a single verse from these songs is enough material to render a massive hit, considering how it's going these days. damn fine music.

  • ...Sure would like to have a little pad....

    ...in Hawaii...

    (LOVE THIS.)

  • don't tell me i am the only one who gets shivers from 0:16 to 0:39

  • @francoboy100 Yeah, that part does give me a weird feeling. I can't tell what it is though. Like, almost like a mixture of everything. Is that what acid feels like?

  • WKYK?

  • nice song

  • @Luffy55555: I think you're absolutely right in your assessment. The only way I ever owned this album was on an 8-track tape from 1967. I still have it BTW... :-)

  • Oh how dull...You know Sonny, I was debating this song long before you were born. As I told someone else, you may have the last word. Thats my little gift to you. Being a 22 year old know it all, I find you repulsively tiresome. I do not debate with children. Adults only. You may have the last word. No more replies from me, got it? Bye Bye.

  • You request respectful opinions but don't care about offending people. You post inflammatory remarks (meant to provoke reactions?), and when someone attacks you, you attack back by calling them juvenile (over and over) for attacking. So yes, I stick by the label I've given you of delusional hypocrite. It's not an attack, but an observation, with evidence. I'm sure you're familiar with this quote by Ghandi: "Be the change you want to see in the world." Try living it if you're sick of being weary.

  • @nowhereman1940 Geez...you are getting really boring. Give my regards to Ghandi.

  • @russieross Know what's funny russie? You keep returning to a song you don't like in order to argue (poorly by the way). I at least like the song, plus get some laughs from your comments. I'm boring you? Did your 15 year old son type that one? Oh, and I gave your regards to Gandhi. I told him it was from russie. He just rolled his eyes. I said, "I know exactly how you feel." If my latest comment seems like an attack, that's because it is. Like you said, "I am not concerned about offending you."

  • those harmonies melt zee heart

  • I'm a massive Beach Boys fan, but Smiley Smile has never really done much for me. It's got some fantastic songs on it, and the stripped down sound is very calming... but compared to Pet Sounds and the terrific albums that came later (Sunflower especially) it doesn't quite stand up with them.

  • this is what we want!

  • popou...what an intelligent reply! Since you are obviously on drugs, that would explain why you enjoy the wretched album.

  • @russieross ........Lets go.

  • @russieross It's hilarious how many negative comments you've made about this album. I personally like the one where you say this album proves people will buy garbage. It also proves that some people are so moved by "garbage" that they find it necessary to spend their time critiquing every song on the album. Maybe you should stick to Jimmie Sturr and Frankie Ford, since the song on your homepage is "Sea Cruise Polka." Wow. How intellectually stimulating. You have REALLY GREAT taste in music.

  • @nowhereman1940 I am so glad I amuse you. I see that you too dislike those who disagree with your opinion. Does not a forum for comments usually include both sides? Lets see..anyone who listens to polkas have less than great taste in music, as you imply? I am not an ardent polka fan, but listen buddy, that dance has been around for years. Get wise and respectfully disgree if you have to. Don't be a jerk. Do not attack with those who don't share your opinion. Try NOT to act like a 15 year old.

  • @russieross It's not your opinions that offend me, but they way you choose to voice them. I'm surprised that you're calling someone else a jerk given your own comments, which are hardly adult-like. Is calling an album garbage a respectful opinion? What about suggesting that someone who enjoys this album must be high? Get a clue. You can't possibly think your opinions are respectful. You're criticizing someone for doing exactly what you do. That's hypocrisy, and delusional, buddy.

  • @nowhereman1940 I get very weary of people like you who attack those with a differing opinion. My statement that one guy must be on drugs was a reply to someone who attacked me. To say something is garbage is disrecpectful? Should have I substituted "trash" or "nonsense" to appease you? I suppose I should be politically correct huh? You can say it's hypocrisy or delusional or whatever, I don't care. You like what you like and I'll like what I like. I am not concerned about offending you.

  • You've got to be kidding...this is the same group that came up with "surfer girl"? Both sides of this album are junk from beginning to end

  • @russieross you are a sack of garbage

  • @popou that's what im talkin about

  • @russieross how about good virbations, if you call that junk your junk.

heroes and villians, that shows just as much talent as good virbation

vegatables is good too. and wonderful

  • Best Beach Boys album bar none. These songs stay with you for longer than even Pet Sounds' do.

  • @wickedidolvibe BOTH BRILLIANT in their own seperate ways i think ; this is completely different from Pet Sounds but still great

  • This was when Brian's goal was to capture shards of eternity, the 'feel' of a given time / space... and they definitely do it here. It's like you're visiting that 'pad' every time ... (just as much with the vinyl)

  • Wierd stuff, but definetly one of the most underrated albums ever

  • "Dumb Angel" - can mean a carved religious relic: Maybe it was meant to describe the physicality of the vinyl? -> i.e. a record is etched and doesn't 'speak' by itself?

  • Got a Canadian printing of the original LP... there's something 'Lo-Fi about its packaging: Odd crumbly feel to the cardboard, the vinyl itself solid, but with a curious powdery texture like an old dried jar of cocoa... oddly fragile...

  • The Beach Boys absolutely blow the Beatles away in every way.

  • @runnersdialzero33

    Without a doubt.

  • @runnersdialzero33 Woooahhhhhhh...hold on there, not in EVERY way, I mean I prefer the sitar in some Beatles' songs over the timpani used in here!

  • @runnersdialzero33 I love the Beach Boys. but wow! what a crazy crazy thing to say. You must really hate The Beatles for some reason.

  • @FruscianteLennon311 I like the Beatles a lot, it's just sad that the Beach Boys never got a fraction of the respect due to them.

  • @runnersdialzero33 :

of course, how dare we compare rubbish like A day in the life or Hey Jude to masterpieces like this XD

  • @brainslow Oh! How dare we compare rubbish like "Revolution 9" to the brilliance of "Surf's Up" and "Cabinessence"?

    Isn't hyperbole fun? Brainslow, indeed.

  • @runnersdialzero33 : and again , how can we compare a "band" with only ONE true songwriter (B Wilson) with a band that had THREE songwriters AND a producer,,, 4 to 1 so now dont say the Beach boys can beat the Beatles in any case..BB may have some excellent songs like Good vibrations, Help me Rhonda etc but most of their output is basically sub standard

  • @brainslow D'awww. You just basically admitted that Brian wrote and produced everything himself and the Beatles needed four songwriters AND a producer to make it happen. Who's the genius now? The Beatles are absolutely great, but they would get lost looking for tools in Brian's toolshed. They never did anything as good as "Surf's Up", "Cabinessence", "'Til I Die", a fair amount of Pet Sounds, etc. etc. etc.

  • @runnersdialzero33 idk if id go that far

  • @runnersdialzero33 i agree w you in some ways, but come one, when the albums friends was released that same year hey jude came out. beatles never lost their spark but brian wilson had a brighter spark that just didn't last as long

  • @truthasfineprint Friends is a GREAT album. I'd take anything on Friends over "Hey Jude", which is a decent but terribly overrated song.

Sorry, Brian didn't lose his spark. Even if he did, dude wrote the music, produced it, and performed all his stuff while the Beatles needed George Martin and four gifted songwriters to make it work a fraction of how well Brian made it work.

  • @runnersdialzero33 im saying simply commercial success wise- beatles never let go of their grip while the beach boys went down in the charts. i mean damn im like brian wilsons music better

  • @runnersdialzero33 Brian didn't do it all himself; the majority of the Beach Boys' songs are credited to more than just Brian, particularly those found on Pet Sounds and Friends. Also don't discount the numerous session men needed to create the sound. We shouldn't feel threatened by other bands who also make great music.

  • @runnersdialzero33 Except for songwriting craftsmanship, lyrical ability, musical innovation, originality, instrumental proficiency, thematic range, lead vocals, influence, popularity, and record sales.

But, other than that, I agree.

  • @TheResidentSociopath Well I'll give you instrumental proficiency, popularity and record sales but that's all you're getting. Now go home.

  • @borskyviolin So you're saying that The Beach Boys were more influential than The Beatles, both culturally and musically? No chance. And in terms of their musical styles, The Beatles were far, far more varied, covering everything from rock, pop, blues, folk, country, progressive, experimental, Eastern, psychedelic, ska, proto-punk, heavy metal, baroque, classical, chamber music, avant garde, jazz, music hall, etc. Though, everything else that I mentioned is purely subjective.

  • @TheResidentSociopath I think the Beach Boys could give the Beatles a run for their money in terms of musical influence (although certainly not cultural influence), although maybe in a less obvious way. I feel like the Beach Boys are like your favorite band's favorite band. And I guess I'll give you stylistic variation, that's fair enough. I do love the Beatles, don't get me wrong.

  • @TheResidentSociopath I think you forgot dubstep

  • @runnersdialzero33 I'm in the middle of that spectrum. Not a fan of polarizing. They both influence the hell out of my music. =D

  • @runnersdialzero33 hahaha, no.

  • @Marchanman actually they do. i love the beatles, but any self respecting beatles fan knows that they owe a lot to the beach boys. there are direct quotes from paul mccartney regarding the influence of Pet Sounds on he and john, you should check it out.

  • @xtelemasterx Yeah, and Rubber Soul widely influenced Pet Sounds. No matter how much you love any band, it is a universally known fact that The Beatles are the best band in the world.

  • @runnersdialzero33 why bother comparing

  • @runnersdialzero33 Maybe on the planet YOU live on (and the 15 people who agree with your comment, part of your intergalactic tribe are they). The only way The Beach Boys blow The Beatles away is by their incredible vocals. The Beach Boys could sing circles around The Beatles and pretty much everyone else. But let's be honest, "Smiley Smile" ain't nothing but dog poop on the bottom of Sgt. Pepper's shoe! Now "SMiLE" on the other hand, was a masterpiece, we'll be hearing THAT on Nov. 1st!

  • @runnersdialzero33 uhh.... I have been listening to the Beach Boys every day for about three weeks, and I can assure you that in terms of what was DONE, the Beatles were far, far more influential.

Maybe if Brian Wilson had gotten some support from his band, the Beach Boys would have challenged the Beatles to soaring heights, perhaps even overtaking them. But to say the Beach Boys blows away the Beatles, as it stands, is very difficult to argue.

  • @runnersdialzero33 not even close :|

  • agree realcritique....

  • I dont what it is about this song but it just really really touches me deeply everytime I hear it...

  • This is sublime simplicity and fun. You either get Smiley Smile or you don't, but it stands on its own. Personally, I would take Smiley Smile and day over Smile. This is a fine, fine album

  • the 60s and 70s rules xD

    wunderful music ;)

  • we should remember that the had beatles had three world-class songwriters, and even Ringo whipped a couple of decent ones out. Brian was shouldering the load on his own, maybe Jardine wrote some? This album is seriously messed up, not from a production standpoint, but from the complete lack of focus on melodies and songwriting. It sounds like Brian Wilson was at the time - adrift.

  • I still laugh at the intro of this song, and wish I had been there with them. I live in Hawaii and have a lil' pad with my Nurse girlfriend,

  • @BeachBoysGuy1 your life sounds pretty sick. need a roommate?

  • @BeachBoysGuy1 your life sounds pretty sick. need a roommate?

  • I must say that Brian was more experimentive than John and Paul. I'd like to say more revolutionary too.

  • "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" in terms of experimentation out does Smiley Smile. The Beatles especially Paul and George were experimenting with loops, backward tape and Indian drones from Indian instruments. The Beatles were experiemting with more exotic sources than Brian Wilson. Not take away from Brian Wilson but "Tomorrow Never Knows" was way more progressive than what the Beach Boys were doing.

  • I do agree with that. But remember, Brian was alone and what he came up with was remarkable. In terms of Pet Sounds and his harmony arrangements, The Beatles tried to beat him at that but they failed. That said, I do agree that The Beatles were more experimental despite what I recently said.

  • I always felt that Brian did not have a George Harrison and a Paul McCartney to support him then again how many bands do. Those guys had some great ideas to flesh out John experimental songs.

In terms of songwriting the Beatles were more consistent as the Beatles had not only two all time great songwriters they also had George Harrison. In the end Brian Wilson heard "Strawberry Fields Forever" and felt beaten. As it is it's sad Brian as I like him never finished Smile.

  • all due repect to you, but you are comparing production and songwriting styles, and those are two different things.

The Beatles ,and am huge fan of both groups, rarely if ever experimented 'musically' nearly as much as BW, while I feel the The Beatles were ahead in 'production' techniques during this period. Hasppy Thanksgiving. JHP

  • Well if I have to disagree with you resprectfully on terms of experimentation songs like "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "Revolution 9" are about as experimental as any mainstream band had ever done to that point. I respect Brian Wilson felt Smiley Smile was a very good album and "God Only Knows" remains the perfect pop song. The Beatles were more consistent as musicians/songwriters than the Beach Boys.

  • Happy Thanksgivivng to you. Am I understanding you correctly ? You think "Revolution 9" (number 9, number 9 etc etc etc) is more experimental or advanced MUSICALLY ? Production-wise, perhaps, but musically that's like saying "' Polly-Wolly- Doodle" was superior, MUSICALLY, than a Bethoveen symphony. GOK was not on Smiley Smile and though SS was clever at times musically, it is to me personally just silly, adventurous musical fun.

  • Perhaps not musically advanced but I don't how you can say "Revolution #9" was not experimental in going outside the limits of pop music.

I know GOK was on Pet Sounds I have the CD. I was complimenting what a great song it is. As for musically advanced I view the Beatles like Brian Wilson as the studio use of an instrument as part of the music. George was using some exotic music theories for example "Blue Jay Way" is based on a diminished scale using the Lydian Mode.

  • There. You're right. It was not musically advanced. The Production was experimental. Dimished scales are used every day by guitarists.Sometimes the 5th note is flatted; Sometimes it is not in which case you have a "half diminshed" chord also known as a minor7th b5 and it sounds more 'cocktail''like as in the7th chord of a scale in 4 part harmony. Straight diminshed chords on top of a major scale is different. "Harmonic Minor" scale" has a different as it ascends than as it descends.

  • I don't wan't to get into an discussion about the Beatles chord progressions. Musicians like David Crosby, Bob Dylan and Kieith Richards come to mind who commented about the Beatles use of chord progressions.

As for "Blue Jay Way' for example in what people were doing then it was strange. Blue Jay Way" obviously influenced by Indian music has the verse in the "Lydian Mode then diminished a major on the same root. a development of the drone principle.

  • They were different bands the Beatles never did a song like this and the Beach Boys never did anything like "Love You To". When you say advanced musically the Beatles and Brian Wilson really helped influenced rock music to go away from the three chord rock and roll of the 50's. The Beatles were not a major influence on the start of Progressive rock because they were a blues band.

  • @Matildamothers

Wait by the Beatles, the guitar in the part after the second chorus is using power chords, and it kind of sounds like Weezer, so maybe they did influence progressive rock. I always thought of them as a rock 'n roll band (their earlier stuff, including Little Richard covers and whatnot) and they were pretty progressive...

  • my asylum...

  • Why isn´t this brilliant piece on the 2004 Smile album?

  • The laughter at the beginning is contagious.

Aloha from my lil' pad in Kaneohe, Hawaii.

    JHP

  • At :16 you can hear the tape splice

  • I like the finger snapping that wakes the song up from the dreamy humming part

  • The best part is at 1:58 where they start using a shovel digging into dirt for percussion. It indicates that "Pad" is not really the word they should have used. "Hut" is more like it. I've always liked the way this tune shifts back and forth between the sound of a ukulele and some weird device that sounds like an electronic ping-pong ball being played along with the foot pedals of a console organ.

  • i LOVE this. it's one of my top 10 beach boys songs. Beats that surfin' crap any day of the week

  • I agree, but the surfin' crap that you speak of is still incredible. It has its own merits. I wouldn't say it comes close to Smiley Smile's version of "Wonderful," but it's still great.

  • i did make that comment five months ago :P i have since grown to appreciate it, especially California Girls - Brian Wilson at his peak :D

  • Their whole musical legacy is amazing. Impossible to compare the pieces of it. Best Rock n' Roll/ Pop Band that ever existed.

  • the first 17 seconds is merely making fun of murray...DO IT!....or i,m taking off my belt!

  • It is rumored that all the beach boys were on something when they sung this!

  • just hear listen to them laughing! :) i've made my little fan speculation...

  • I did see something about that elsewhere, but there are nice harmonies in here and I did a couple of relatively-crude versions (no singing) for a music web site.

  • does someone yell "Do it!" at the beginning?

  • the best beach boys song!!!

the olivia tremor control does a really great version of this song too,

  • Thanks for putting the Smiley Smile album up! The great harmonies and sparse production are a great to hear after a stressful day.

  • This beautiful though, its always nice to hear them harmonizing no matter how weak the Smiley stuff is

  • It's people like you that keep Mike Love's touring jukebox still profitable...

  • Call it what you want but its very enjoyable and a very positive experience. Too much negativity associated with Brian's minions.

  • i can't stand the first period of their career. i simply love this one. will someone dare say that "little bird", "wind chimes", "transcendantal meditation" and, to be on the topic, "little pad", are not beautiful pieces of music?

  • Comment removed

  • I couldn't argue with that at all. One I really love, with all my heart, is "Let The Wind Blow."

So beautiful. Those songs from that time/space.

  • @ Alixx2

Sounds like the engineers have cleaned up this recording - my 1990 vintage 'Twofer' CD has a couple of glitches on it that sound like tape flutter.

  • Another simple yet great composition by Brian Wilson that sets a feeling and time, thanks.

  • my favorite on smiley smile

  • Despite many critic reviews, Smiley Smile is a beautiful album.

  • I think it has grown with time, the world just wasn't ready for it when it first was released.

  • I really have to agree. I mean I won't listen to anything but this and Pet sounds. BTW I was at the record shop(yes records) and I found a used LP called"Beach boys live in concert" its a double lp set. Does anyone know if it's any good????

  • Is it "The Beach Boys Concert!" from 1964, or "The Beach Boys In Concert" double LP from 1973?

I have the double live album on CD, and its excellent!!!

  • Haha I totally disagree with you.

It's an interesting look into what brian wilson was thinking at the time.

Would I ever want to hear it for enjoyment? No, because it's made up of two amazing songs crammed in with nine demo tapes with fuzzy vocals and a retarded organ.

I really wish the Beach Boys had skipped this album and released Wild Honey. Perhaps their fate would have been completely different.

  • I doubt it because it was the destruction of the original Smile album that destroyed their career at this point.

  • Nice!

  • Nice to hear the rare tunes, too many people putting up the hit songs and its becoming a "overkill".

  • Agree. It's a bit strange that the Beach Boys songs on YouTube are so few.

  • huh? there's loads of vids, everything you could ever need, plus plenty of rare footage

  • Well, there are plenty of Beach Boys songs, of course, but it's not like the Beatles where you can find every single song ever made. (Thank you Revan0357)

  • @Alixx2 Your right, just like 3 mintues ago i was searching for the 20/20 verson of Cabinessence. i could not find, instead i found the SMiLE verson ( probley better, though) does the 20/20 verson sound different

  • @DaddyBog This has some nice harmonies in it. Too bad it is obscure.
