I remember that time I asked the DJ to play this 2 times in a row, And he hung up me. But AHA! I can listen 10 times in a row now! So phooey on you, Mr. DJ! LOL.
Finis Henderson was brought up in the Chicago School of the Arts, where he started working as a musical impressionist before taking his act on the road and landing in Los Angeles to try his hand at singing. SKIP TO MY LOU was a regional hit in the Midwest (especially Chicago) after he gained his name as a comic. Finis still performs under Blue Moon Mgmt. today and still sings but prefers to work as a "singing comic" in his acts if he has his way. Album cover does hold a resemblance to O'bryan.
This is my mate tammys tune... shes in hospital ..we thought we was gonna lose her..but shes made of strong stuff!! this ones for you girl... glad its all over!.. x
I had forgotten how great this song was. Looking for something else, came across this and remembered instantly. Marketing keep Finis from the greatness he deserved - he has a great voice. Everyone used to sing and dance to this - Thanks Finis!
Great song and performer! Like I said in another post- This would have been a mega jam for Jermaine Jackson! I thought it was him when it first dropped. 'Doubt if Jermaine could have pulled off that perfect falsetto though, even with his talents.
Gotta love youtube for this!..this is my joint. Brings back a childhood memory of hanging with couple of my boys in the park, playing this over and over and over again on a lil getto blaster. thanks for the post . peace world
man 1983 i was 3 years old running down thompson st. in camden n.j. but i remember hearing my pops pulling up in his 83 nissan datsun bangin this...lol
Finis estuvo en el Festival de Viña del Mar en Chile en la década de los 80´s representando a los EEUU con la canción "Message" (Música de Al Mac kay de EWF).
NYC 1983 !!! I was on 72nd St. Central Park West, skating in the big loop with all types of people. Young old, Black, White, Latin ahhhh man!!!!!!!!!!
@BigMarl96 My grandparents lived nearby on #6 W77th St. Fantastic neighbourhood ! While visiting them from Denmark, I had many great long walks on Manhattan in the 1970's and 1980's. I remember seeing my first break dancer, on Columbus Avenue, spinning on his head, on a piece of cardboard.
In Boston, circa 1983, this tune got play on a college station, W-E-R-S, 88.9 FM, but that was it. We were lucky back in the day, weren't we! Class class class tune! Popped into my head last week in the shower! Thank you heyroz27 and YouTube!
I was in the 10th Grade when this song Hit and It was My Joint, I use to sing it to my then girl friend Tawanda and I let her borrow it and haven't seen it since Thanks for the Post!!!!
I reminisce over this jam... my cousin runs up to my work place and he's excited about this new jam "Skip To My Lou". I tell him nothing is better than Cisselin' Hot... then we hit the club that night... it's was sooooo over... This and "Curious" are my all time favs...
For me as an avid record collector, this had to be the most under pushed album of that year! The cut 'You Owe It All To Love' and 'Lovers' are beautiful ballads. Great album!
This is one hell of a uplifting soulful boogie joint!! How can anyone not dance to this classic?? His voice, the groove, the sparkling production! Just love it!
This is my joint. I still play this song and i'm still not tired of it. Finis has got a good voice. Thanx heyroz27. does any know if a video was made. PEACE!
you owe it all to love & Blame it on the night, son los temas que mas me gustan de este gran vocalista y showman, como lo es tambien Julio Sabala , henderson al tener un excelente registro vocal puede conseguir copiar las voces de otros artistas al igual que Julio
This was his 1st single & i took me 20 years to finally find out this guy's name because this was one of my favorite songs. Got a lot of airplay here in L.A. And his 2nd single "Lovers"..omg when I found it was the same person, I said this guy is talented. He falls into the same catergory as Billy Griffin from The Miracles. Both underrated at the time.
What a great tune. Should've been a major hit, but this was also back in the DOG DAYS of Motown, when all of their promotion was behind Lionel Richie. Rick James' Punk Funk machine was running out of steam by this time, too. There was a still a lot great music at Motown, but it was poorly promoted.
That is so true. You're right, this could have been a bigger hit if they promoted the right way. It's bad for artists if the music company isn't putting 100% behind their projects.
The Temptations, Rick James, and Smokey Robinson were under a dry spell. Marvin Gaye, Teena Marie, and Diana Ross just left the label. Berry was goin' broke, so he invested more into DeBarge, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder, who he thought had the potential to become successful. He didn't give much a good damn about Mary Jane Girls, Ozone, Dazz Band, and Finis and they were all good new motown artists in the 1980s!
StretchinOut has their audio clip posted up on youtube that has the single "Gigolette" Ozone was a funk band that was a protogee of Teena Marie. I guess you're right about Dazz Band and Mary Jane Girls had their hits, but they were limited toward black audiences except for "Let It Whip" (1982), and "In My House" (1985) respecitvely. I'm not sure if Finis released a video to "Skip 2 My Lou"
Thye kinda picked up a little bit better after Berry sold Motown. Shanice, Today, The Boys, and The Good Girls were successful for a couple of years because they were young and recorded all New Jack Swing music. yeah, I chekced out Denroy Morgan, Orbit, and Secret Weapon and its a damn shame there was no video for "Skip 2 My Lou."
One more thing about Ozone...their bass player, Charles Glenn, is one of the few (along with Mark Adams of Slave) that were capable of giving Louis Johnson a run for his money at the dawn of the 80s. Again...look up "Gigolette ozone" and you'll hear what I mean.
OMG SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!! I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS SONG FOR 20 YEARS!!!! BLESS YOU!!

Who produced Finis's 1983 album?
Anyone remember...anyone, anyone??
ladyvaderkmc 4 years ago
I remember some talk of someone who was a great producer. Did he have something to do with Taste of Honey?
sblizzy 4 years ago
Yes he did produce an album by Taste of Honey...you're on the right track!
He played guitar for one of the biggest R&B bands of the 70's.

Earth, Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang or Heatwave?
