Although the cues seem weird and stupid, I think they're rather consistent - it's 1, 2, 1-2-play - you just wait for him to do two silly up and downs on the beat where normally you're supposed to come in.
Seriously, I don't think he's much different from the "top star" conductors. They also like showing off and conducting one beat ahead the orchestra. This supports my hypothesis that conductors of professional orchestras are absolutely expendable people.
@subkontrabasklarinet Yeah, but you don't know anything about what happens AFTER the concert: they patch up recordings with the utmost precision and accuracy, no more showboating and histrionics. A concert is not a mere musical experience, otherwise people would just buy records. People need a bit of showmanship.
Okej, i've got a question, i've always liked classical music, but why is there a fucking guy standing there waving a stick, i mean im guesing they learn't the music before they went there and what tone, strenght speed and all thay jazz, is he completely useless?
It's very funny that there are several people that think that the conductor doesn't have to do nothing interesting in the concert... If you only have to follow the leaders of the section, the conductor is only disturbing, so he mustn't be there in the concert, only in the rehersals!!! Other thing is the orchestal discipline... it's true...
In this case I think that the orchestra'd play better with this awful conductor!!! :-P
not playing together because of the conductor is youth orchestra shit. maybe the section leaders lack the skill to lead. if u've been in a professional rehearsal, u would kno wat im talkin about.

It could be that the conductor is actually a martial artist, that was sent to Japan on a secret mission, and was just pretending to be a conductor. You laugh. But try this: Slow down the video by 4X, and you will see what I mean.
I saw this video at least 15 times..and my conclusion is this.He must be a wonderful musician..and u can see that if u hear..The orchestra has many wonderful moments, you can feel and hear rich sound, good work at the rehearsal, you can feel the glory of Beethoven..But it looses from that conducting style..the poor man looks like he don't know what to do..and the orchestra too, because of that..If he was steady at tempo,it would be a great recording...
I have been to his concert several times and I still remember those were the most impressive concerts I'd ever experieced. The best one was Brahms secomd symphony when he stopped the music because of the orchestra's technical reason. But after that the music went so great. that´s a bad joke, really. his upbeat to me looks like "play!!play!!Why don´t you start playing?Play!!!"
if you listen very carefully, you may hear that already the very first note is not exactly together (almost, but not exactly,)
and really obvious it is at 1:41, at 3:18 and especially at 4:03, the horns just can´t play togehter cause he´s not conducting well.
He may be a great musician (I don´t know him), but for me,he´s a quite poor conductor.
