The US congress is being lobbied by telecommunication companies to charge access fees to viewers and websites. if you dont pay, you dont have access or the download speed will be slow. the US supreme court has ruled on this and said it is ok for them to do so.

what happened to radio and television? They are essentially the same ideas... instead of cables its radio waves. The only reason the internet isn't controlled like those is because its relatively new.
u bring up a good point...but actually TV and radio has BIG differences...radio used waves, but they limited how much power a station could use, limiting the amount of waves, not just waves. and tv is brought into the home, its nothing like internet in that there is 1 main source bringing it into ur home. ISP's are considered that source, but the ISP's are just like u, only with faster cables...in that they reach the same web, and bring it to u....then charge u for there convience...

All it is is the transfer of data between computers, that's all. You can't just "shut it down" or anything like that, the ISPs don't create the internet, they just facilitate your access to large scale networks.
You NEED the ISP for the transfer, right? The ISPs are already controlled and limited such as the phone company or cable company. For example in my area, I can only access the internet through (high speed) through Comcast or Verizon, that is it. No other choice. What about the companies that control the domains? That is another way to limit access to sites.

I think there are too many creative and active people on the internet, most of whom are anti-establishment for the internet to die. If the internet does become TV 2.0 i think an underground uprising would start and just create a second network. Just look at how huge torrents are and the implementation of private trackers, it doesn't seem that implausible for people to start building up their own hardware and connecting them.

that will never happen.Hackers are our friends and will find ways to get free internet.Google is a search engine.If a new engine is created they could offer it for free by using advertising to pay for it.I dont know about you but Id jump on the free search engine and leave google....which would in turn bankrupt google........that will never work and never happen for those reasons

thats what google does is use adverts to fuel the fact that there engine is free, bing however is also free and is owned by microsoft and in many cases is better than google. so if this were to happen (which it wont) then google would have to compete with yahoo, and bing and some others. it would end up not being profitable for anyone.

u bring up a good point...but actually TV and radio has BIG differences...radio used waves, but they limited how much power a station could use, limiting the amount of waves, not just waves. and tv is brought into the home, its nothing like internet in that there is 1 main source bringing it into ur home. ISP's are considered that source, but the ISP's are just like u, only with faster cables...in that they reach the same web, and bring it to u....then charge u for there convience...

I really don't get all these people daying "the internet won't exist any more" and stuff like that, do you people even know what the internet is? All it is is the transfer of data between computers, that's all. You can't just "shut it down" or anything like that, the ISPs don't create the internet, they just facilitate your access to large scale networks.
We couldn't kill the internet if we tried.

You NEED the ISP for the transfer, right? The ISPs are already controlled and limited such as the phone company or cable company. For example in my area, I can only access the internet through (high speed) through Comcast or Verizon, that is it. No other choice. What about the companies that control the domains? That is another way to limit access to sites.

I think there are too many creative and active people on the internet, most of whom are anti-establishment for the internet to die. If the internet does become TV 2.0 i think an underground uprising would start and just create a second network. Just look at how huge torrents are and the implementation of private trackers, it doesn't seem that implausible for people to start building up their own hardware and connecting them.

To be honest and quite frank...the only thing left in the USA (or of the world) that is truly free or uncorrupt is the internet. People really need to stand up against this. Think about it...the last untouched freedom you have being taken away from you by the government or rich corporations. Could you imagine not being able to go on wikipedia, looking up media, or hell...even trying to buy something off ebay. yeah but what they want to do in 2012 is change it so that you have to buy another subscription on top of your internet service. so its like.. you buy a family pack or something that has lets say youtube, facebook, a couple search engines, maybe disney or cartoon network websites for the kids. stuff like that. and if you go on another website that's off of the ones you subscribed to, then you would have to pay extra for each page or something you go to
