Older is better when it comes to VW's. My 1974 Beetle 1.6 only has about 110hp but it weighs around 1700 pounds and it's rear wheel drive so it doesn't matter. You can buy an old VW for almost nothing. Put 5k in it and it'll smoke just about any Honda you'll ever come across, and give plenty of Mustangs and Camaros a decent run.
