lego actually makes two different ring (or hollow) gears ... one is in the turntables (like you have above; there are two varieties of them with the only difference being the mounting points) the other is actually a wheel from the halfire droid set - it is much larger and allows you to fit different sized gears inside. the turntable is a good piece to use, though I would recommend figuring out a way to put 3-planet gears around your sun gear; its possible and can handle much higher torques!
muhaha... glue the technic turntable & run a second motor off a train controller to the outside of the turntable and you get a variable transmission similar to the Power Split Device as found in a Toyota Prius (maybe) - see eahart[dot]com[slash]prius[slash]psd for info & interactive demo
Bill you are a GENIUS! A GENIUS!I never would be able to make this .THIS is so cool it must have been the hardest thing you've ever made!Hope you enjoy building.
Well thanks for the nice comments. I think the hardest thing I ever built is IN PROGRESS. I am taking this model as a basis and making a 3 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION... Stay Tuned... Bill
Bill, if you want to regulate the speed of the motor the lego shop at home site has a power regulator on sale for $20! Can't wait to see the transmission!

You could use a fly wheel for the automatic trans. Idk if that's what the govonor you're talking about is but it could work
