Ayoob is a syrian con artist. He capitalizes on the mall ninja's in America, the people that wanted to be a cop but couldnt cut it. And he does so very well.
being a cop I always carried a backup. but Massad's explanation here is so simple and so easy to defend that it crystallizes the entire rationale into a very thoughtful and acceptable reason for carrying a secondary handgun!
@nemtastic I wouldn't worry about Mas getting angry at me, because he is a law-abiding citizen. He knows very well that anger, under the law, is not sufficient justification for physical violence:) --
@perspicacity89 I have both his books and im a big follower of him (unrelated i know) but I remember reading that he is syrian, like either his grandparents or great grand parents came over back in the early 20th century
When pretending to be a civilian, I carry only one. While on duty, I carry 2.
The difference? The potential of a gunfight is greater when on duty. I want to be ready for that malfunction. While off duty ( and not a walking bullseye), I will have the element of surprise and trust my one pocket hammerless revolver.
What if it fails? Life is full of what ifs. Carrying one concealed firearm gives me comfort. It's personal preference.
@skynug hope you carry plenty of ammo since you're runnin a j frame man. me personally u run a glock 27 iwb and 2 mags. because 80% of malfunctions in semi's are magazine related.
@GunWebsites judging by his accent,i think he,s one of them dad gummed new englanders. if i had to pinpoint id say eiter vermont or new hampshire somewhere along the connecticut river valley. im pretty sure he,s american to. me, my moms from italy,my dads from england. know what that makes me?AMERICAN!!!!
@perspicacity89 'I never thought to ask since I could care less'.
agreed. he's american. he's a cop. he's a self defense expert. what ethnicity he is is way down on my list of what i care about him. i think i'd rather know whether he fishes or not before i know what his ancestry is.
@GunWebsites forgive my humble English as its not my first language... as Masaad talks about carrying a second gun for an emergency, i believe that the first gun is already there for that emergency. To prepare for more emergencies by merely carrying more guns may seem unnecessary... from my civilian point of view, which does not touch on LE, security and military
@lobzdik 'as Masaad talks about carrying a second gun for an emergency, i believe that the first gun is already there for that emergency'. sure, but if your carrying a 'main' piece, what harm in carrying a little .32 or something on your ankle for backup?. the 'main' could fail (jam or whatever) or could run out of ammo. having a few xtra shots from a backup could make the difference.
@richardarichard Mas has produced articles about "not letting friends carry mouseguns." That said, Ayoob has also written that a .32 is the minimum standard for a self-defense gun, everything else being equal --
@stevevandien ....' That said, Ayoob has also written that a .32 is the minimum standard for a self-defense gun, everything else being equal....'.
i think that's the point. i'd rather be armed w/a a little, small caliber derringer than not armed at all. that nut in AZ just downed 16 people (i think 8 or 9 died) w/a glock 19.
i maintain that skill trumps caliber. carry what you're comfortable with.
@richardarichard Skill ABSOLUTELY trumps caliber. If you are skilled with a .22 (or any other caliber) and can carry it comfortably, DO SO, by all means. Rock on, bro:) --- I recall Mas writing of a client who couldn't handle anything more powerful than a .25. Yet the client became so skilled with this round that he'd INEVITABLY blast an attacker's head at close range:) --
@lobzdik Clearly you weren't listening very closely. Being unable to use your primary weapon because of malfunction, having it taken away or knocked out of your in a struggle, being wounded or being in a position that makes it difficult to draw your primary weapon are all situations that occur in civilian self defense scenarios (more so, in fact, than in LE). In such situations a backup weapon can save your life.
@lobzdik First gun is for an emergency... second is for a supper emergency. You keep a box of band aids for a cut, you keep a reel of guaze for a supper cut. You keep five dollars in your pocket in case you hit a small speed bump, and you keep five hundred dollars in your mattress for a big bump.
@SupremeAmerican And I suppose you think band-aids and a bottle of water are enough for an emergency.
I could use your argument if you have any kind of radio, batteries and flashlights. You're not a soldier, if there is an emergency you will just need band-aids and a bottle of water. Help will arrive soon.
@drukenhard Ayoob has written quite a bit about the primary shooter arming the backup shooter with his backup gun.. He suggests a .38 Special snubby for that purpose:) --
Massad Ayoob has an incredible way to mainline logic efficiently to the listener's brain. If you're not a good listener, he has a gifted way to engage you so that you choose to listen and listen well. A more efficient and credible communicator there isn't...
Ayoob tarish is a famous yemeni (Yemen:an arab country on the southern tip of the arabian peninsula, south of the saudis) i wonder how this guy got the name Ayoob????
Massad Ayoob is awesome. If there is a firearms debate, Massad is the person you want on your side of the debate, not to mention that he's the one who peaked my interest in firearms. Good vid! 5/5
@gangstapranksta717 I agree. I was a borderline Brady Campaign advocate UNTIL I began reading Mas. His lucid, logical presentation of the FACTS about civilian firearms ownership converted me BIG-time:) --
Yeah, he is. I am not sure exactly when In the Gravest Extrme was released, but I remember G & A magazine released excerpts from it for several issues. I read every one, I was 9 at the time.
@DandDskeeto That's the only issue I'd raise with Mas Ayoob. "In the Gravest Extreme" was published in 1980. The references regarding armed self-defense under the law, the best available handguns AND the best ammunition are LONG out of date. This book -- OUTSTANDING for its time, don't get me wrong -- REQUIRES an update, three decades later. I'm sure Ayoob is very busy. Even so, I've no idea why he's never put off other projects to bring this extremely important book up to date:)
Been reading articles written by Ayoob for years. Seems like a really cool guy to allow himself to be video taped and take time to have a discussion. Like him even more. Great vid.
The best thing about Mass's articles is that they are first hand accounts or testimonies from court cases that he was personally involved in. Not 3rd or 4th person stories that he heard through the grapevine. All stories can be looked up as a matter of public record. If you haven't read it yet look up the article he wrote entitled the "Marine". It's great read/ interview.
It makes sense. If you're in a gunfight, chances are you day hasn't gone too well and more things are going to go wrong.
