What an incredible band! Like many Zappa formations, I don´t think that there is or ever will be such a bunch of amazing musicians being led by someone like Zappa again, where weirdness, professionality and geniosity meet so purely... big fan, amazing work!
Vinnie's the most TECHNICALLY AMAZING drummer ever to squat over a stool, making him both the world's greatest drum clinic drummer and the precise reason I cannot bear listening to him..I saw this Zappa band in the late 70s and was horribly disappointed not just b/c I would MUCH preferred to have seen Aynsley Dunbar but b/c of what sterile, bullshit chops-manship aimed solely at impressing musician/fan boys that Frank's music had become, as evidence his bringing in soulless clowns like V.C.
@dantean How is "Joe's Garage" any less soulful than "Waka Jawaka"? They're both great albums with plenty of soul & technique. Whenever you expand technique you necessarily have to de-condition from comfort zones that people call 'soul.' Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" or Zappa's "Jazz from Hell" are not soulless but require de-conditioning to meet the soul of the creator on its own level. Vinnie is Allan Holdsworth to Dunbar's Jeff Beck, they both have their place but it's better to have both.
This is definitely Vinnie, admittedly he does look Ralph Humphreys-ish, but you can clearly see in the video clip "Frank Zappa "Seal Call Fusion Music" w/ Vinnie Colaiuta & Tommy Mars @ Circus Krone 1978" that Frank calls him Vinnie.
Zappa used and played with many drummers.... I can think of 2 great players besides Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio comes to mind as also my bro' Maury Baker ! All his players had to be good readers to read his charts !
Tony Williams, there's another musical great who was gone way too soon. Remember tunes like "Where?" with John McLaughlin and Larry Young? Unbelievable writer and drummer, ahead of his time IMHO.
Vinnie is very good on this, and I really like his later work with Jeff Beck and Tal Wilkenfeld. Too bad Frank's gone, I bet he would be one of the most relevant writers on the planet if still alive.
@rothcam2 This is relevant now. The same pitiful social idiocy that was "hip" then is en vogue just like it has been for most generations in most cultures.
@rothcam2 That Jeff Beck DVD, Live from Ronnie Scott's just makes me shake my head in disbelief. Vinnie has the greatest touch. He is on top of every dynamic change, every tempo change, he has great improv skills, and then there's Jeff Beck. I hadn't heard much of his stuff before buying that dvd. I had to also buy it on cd. And I'm in love with Tal Wilkenfeld. What a little badass Aussie she is.
this music seems endless, but i don't to complain...i'm comfortable with his music.. why is that? it's strange. i think i like his music... maybe even i like it a lot...
Holy crap, Vinnie looks older in this video than he does today. Wow, in addition to being one of the world's best drummer (the best, in my opinion), he also has aged very well :)
On this germantour I saw Frank 3 times ! I was a really fan!! But the time is passing bye! My love for him and his music is forever. On this tour he played many songs from "Sheik Jabuti"but the album comes out two years later! Frank was the master of suprise !!
It's vinnie..the eyeglass flick is there. The sitting low is there. IT's him

Vinnie may be the finest drummer to ever sit on a drummers stool. Just great. Love his work on the Joni Mitchell album "Dog eat Dog" - great record.

Several questions for this: 1.) Is that Warren or Denny in the back ground? 2.) Is that FZ's famous Hendrix strat near his amps?
