When Handel wrote this piece he locked himself in a room for many days, barely eating or sleeping. His assistant was concerned for his health and sanity. One day the assistant found Handel with tears streaming down his face
The man asked Handel what was wrong and the composer pointed to the sheet music for the HC and said... I have seen the very face of God.
My School Choir has 1 week to learn this and preform it at our Christmas concert without music The concert is Dec. 13 and we have not even seen the music yet UGH.
9th grade choir is singing this... it's very difficult -_____-'' we started it last monday, had a week off and our concert is next week..this oughta be fun
You rarely ever hear the sopranos in tune on "king of kings, and lord of lords." Makes it harder on the first trumpet. This recording is no exception.
I sung this with the combined high school Acapella choirs of my home town for 3 years every christmas at the big cathederal down town with the continuo, a trumpet player the tympanny, two violins, two violas and a bass and I remember the sound as full as the full orchestra of the present video. I want this playing on my last day on Earth, hair on fire, going mach 1 as I rocket across whitesands NM. Handel, you genius, you.
@Nagi21 If i recall, a conductor's job is actually to keep everyone in rhythm. Its easier for a orchestra to use the visual cues from the conductor than to try to stay in rhythm with the rest by ear.
(Not saying that the following line applies to you).
There's a large misconception that Conductors direct the pitch, which isn't true. (We can blame Bugs Bunny :P)
@callmesora The conductor also is responsible for the interpretation of the piece. He determines how he wants the express each phrase, and how prominent each part should be at any given point.
As a baritone I feel like a douche when I sing this because it's pretty easy. It get's up there but not that high, and it gets down into a lower baritone note. Definitely a beautiful, difficult, genius, MASTERPIECE!
Sang this every year of high school choir and though I'm not very traditionally "religious" it still gives me shivers when I hear it...a very great piece of music indeed!
I'm not very traditionally "religious", sang this all four years of high school choir and it can still give me shivers when I here it. A very great piece of music no doubt!
At the high school I went to, every year at Christmas they do this song, and have the alumni join them. I missed it last year but I won't this time! It was so fun to see people who I had known come up with me then ^_^ Can't wait!
It is obscene and a sacrilege that this video is contaminated by ads. And to have some nasty video by Britney Spears shoved in our faces? Unbelievable! No expression of faith (whatever faith it is) should be so defiled. VEVO should be ashamed and driven out of business.
I want to use this video to help explain the concept of Easter to my international students. This particular one because the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields is the best. Sadly, I will have to apologize to them for the ads.
If you are going to Criticize a wonderful piece of music at least get your Holidays right. Handel wrote the Messiah for the Easter celebration NOT Christmas.
Christmas (Mass of Christ) was created by the sexually perverted Roman Catholic church. The Catholic church was created by Lucifer (Satan).
Why do most non-Catholics, and many Christians, celebrate this wildly wicked weird witchcraft holiday from the weathered old Roman religion of rapists? It's beautiful side of evil?...Well, evil, is still evil, no matter how it is served to you.
@MasterofGalaxies4628, Christmas is evil. I cannot be cursed because I am doing the Lord God's will. I do not celebrate this evil holiday of the Devil. God shall a put curse on all who celebrate this holiday of Hell. You and your children' s children shall suffer plague and death. The Holy Bible explains this fact.
@TruthTeller878 Alrighty then! That's not very nice of you now is it? I don't really feel like getting into a religious arguement on a video for a beautiful chorus, but you say you are doing the Lord's will, yet you are condemning people to damnation and death, one of the worst things you could possibly do. And what is one of the Ten Commandments? Love thy neighbor I believe it was? Just saying buddy.
i love this song but hates the advert that comes before it... must we have to watch the advert everytime we wanna watch the songs... pls tell them to take it off............
I learned the Alto part to this when I was a freshman in high school. I'm a senior in college now and still remember most of my part. This is the only piece to stick with me this long. I'd kill to be able to preform it with a choir again.
It was most likely an editorial discrepancy. There are differences like this in some of the more un-popular editions. I really like it, though. It's refreshing.
@Lordoffail haha true say! and it pisses me off that an ad for rihanna was before this, and katy perry's face is next to the video. next to handel, they don't deserve to open their mouths.
If like it was the end of Armageddon and Like Satan is about to kill someone they cry out "JESUS!" and it starts playing the "and he shall reign forever and eeeeeever, HALLELUJAH HALLELUJAH" and then Jesus and the devil fight Ninja style lol, that would be fucking SWEEEEET!
I was in my high school choir and we had to sing this. Im a soprano. I swear it was one of the hardest songs to sing. but its one of the best ive ever learned.
@salaxxx21 I am confused by the backdrop. Is this the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields performing at a 250th Anniversary in Dublin? Or am I missing something else. As other viewers have pointed out, there is much advertising, but little documentary information. Great, though!
Being a Soprano is tough, didn't you see Tony Soprano get betrayed by his own family and blood relatives on several occasions throughout the series? I totally agree
@salaxxx21 We did it every xmas at my HS with the choir and symphonic band together, being in the symphonic band it is also a decently tough piece, moreso for the blending of instruments, tonation, and trying to be loud enough but quiet enough for the choir. Being a trombone, my hated part was 1:53 since the B natural always tends to be hard to nail with 4+ trombones. It never wants to sit right in tonality =(
I use this to troll people.
