  • what microphone do you use?

  • @denverdanny

Behringer C-1...I'll probably start selling them soon...but definitely Audio Technica and Samson (Samson's C01 is basically the same thing).

Thanks for watching and keep me in mind for your future music instrument needs...my store should be fully operational soon!

  • great idea, now i just have 2 figure out way 2 build 1 with electrical outlets so I can plug in my speakers, computer, etc... so I can work in peace. the apartments above me & next 2 me drive me absolutely nuts, as I hear them walk, stomp, etc... but 4 this kind of cubicle, I guess m gona need 1 foot to 2 foot thick walls, door, & space for at least twice my body length, length and width.

  • @goohber1

rather than build with outlets, why not use a power strip and an extension cord? Might save some time and work! Not to mention money and potential shocks!

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • what about the roof?

  • @KiDDeSouza

Good question...for the best results, I would recommend doing the same treatments on the ceiling. I haven't gotten around to it, yet...but I plan on it. I saw a twin sized foam pad at Goodwill last time I was there, but I was sort on cash. Hopefully it's there in 2 days. If not, I still have several curtains left...

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • Another great way to get a dead sound if you don't have a closet or a room, is to set up a box around the mic – any old beer box will do. Line each side with the same kind of foam and place the mic within the box as far away from the opening as possible. Then you kind of sing into the box.

Looks very cheap, but sounds a lot better than in the room, great for amps too.

  • @almontage

Great tip....thanks! And thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • So first you padded it with the foam.. then the curtains?

  • @YUNGSUPRA23

Yup...I used the "egg crate" style foam that most people either have or can get from Wal-Mart (or similar store)...and then I covered that with the Hotel curtains...big, thick curtains that will absorb more vocal reflections.

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • @CheapGearGuy alright cool man thanks alot i really appreaciate it ! great videos btw

  • @YUNGSUPRA23

    Thanks....and thanks for watching!

  • You forgot about ventilation. I am being very serious about this but if your vocalist passes wind while in a close confined quarters it can prove detrimental to the take because it can interfere with proper breathing, which as you know is essential for any singer. Without ventilation the odors simply do not dissipate and the nausea such an experience produces can directly affect the vocal performance. Nobody can sing when they are gagging and gasping for breath. You need to vent that bad boy

  • @BigFatBetty

Yeah, that's why I "ventilate" before& after takes, not during. I currently only record myself (no other bands) and it will probably stay that way until I feel confident with my mixdown techniques (which won't happen until I get a good set of monitors). If I ever get any customers over to record, I'll be sure to tell them to "ventilate" before going in...mainly because it's MY booth and I don't want anyone's gasses stuck in their for God knows how long.

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • given, that was a crappy way to word it in retrospect and I apologize for that. The sorber panels I was talking about are actually very cheap to build and would give you a nicer more professional result...I guess that was what I was trying to get at. That's all.

  • @thechazdarby

Well, I appreciate the apology, but I have no real need of the sorber panels. This is how I've been doing things for years and it works. Besides, my booth cost me $4 and fits in the room I'm using. It's pretty cramped in here with 10 guitars and basses, a couch, my workstation, a digital drum set, & keyboard. The closet works fine. This video doesn't really show how well my set up works, but if you listen to a few of my recordings, you'll see. soundclick(dot)com/gearedmah

    CGG

  • @thechazdarby

I'll also add that what you describe may be VERY useful to other people, though. If they are as cheap and as god as you say, I'm sure that someone out there would LOVE to have a video of how to make them and I would be glad to link your video off of mine, since I've had nearly 40,000 views and get about 189 views daily. My main goal is just to help people out and anything that can do that, I support.

Sorry if I was a bit of an asshole.

  • well, as for your attacking and defensive response, if you re-read what I wrote, I COULD show you a way to to it that WOULD BE PROFESSIONAL and would look nice. As far as the "have nots" bs, I have worked my butt off my entire life to DO IT RIGHT and TREAT THE ART WITH THE RESPECT IT DESEVES! I know it may have sounded like I was ripping on you, but I wasn't. I know how important the world of home recording is and god bless your efforts. cheers.

  • @thechazdarby Yes, I'm sure you COULD, but you haven't...nor did you offer. You simply stated that I could build sorber panels, "But we all appreciate input". How else am I supposed to take it when you say, "I get the impression you may not have the 25+ years". In a civil conversation, that statement is not even necessary. How about, "I agree, this isn't the only way to do it, but I can see how it would be beneficial if you were on a really tight budget...might even work pretty well...Cheers"

  • Big and thick

  • so....you could build some simple sorber panels....you'd spend very little money...and they look nice. just saying. they cost nothing to make. you can build flame certified panels for nothing as long as you know what you are looking for. I get the impression that you may not have the 25 plus years experience professionally that I have, but we all appreciate input!

  • @thechazdarby

I've been playing music for 20 years...recording, over 10 years. I'm self taught at everything (instruments, recording, webpage design, video & audio editing, etc), so while I might not have the MOST experience, the experience I do have is almost exclusively MINE. You could build your sorber panels, sure...but would it honestly be under $50 (my booth cost about $4 since I was gifted the foam) & would it fit in my 9X9 room that has everything I have? (cont.'d)

  • @thechazdarby

Besides, I'm NOT pro...never claimed to be. I'm a guy trying to make descent quality recordings on a budget...& since the first few video reviews I've done of cheap gear got so many hits, I realized that there are a lot of people out there that want to do the same. A lot people were asking how I got my voice so clear, so I showed them, which means they have less experience than me. The description says you don't have to like my techniques & that this is not the ONLY way to do it.

  • @thechazdarby

Besides, if you're PRO, why are you trolling for tutorials? Just to make sure the rest of us "less thans" are giving proper advice? Are you the sound police? You make sure that all sound proofing is up to your own specific & opinionated codes? At least I am trying to help...where's your video? Why don't you put your "professional" experience to good use & give us "unqualifieds" some tips? Nobody helped me, so I'm sharing what I've taught myself. It might be wrong but it works.

    CGG

  • cool I think im going to do this, but i might put 3-4 small sound absorbing pads on the outside just to be safe

  • Thanks for good idea, i'll remember this, or maybe i'll do the same. If you place a guitar combo in there it should be good for guitar recording too, i guess.

  • @KalishAlexander

Yeah, it should work for that, too. I would suggest lowering the curtains until they touch the floor (mine are hung with vocals in mind). At one house I rented, I had a HUGE closet that could fit like 2 or 3 people. And I believe it was a pine closet to keep moths from getting in there (I guess it acts like a natural moth ball?? All I know is the guy was REALLY excited about it when he showed me the house). It was AWESOME for recording anything.

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • Cool thanks!!

  • @heathandmillerco

No problem...glad you dig the video...please keep me in mind if you have any other future musical needs. My store should be fully operational in about a month or two.

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • just did the xact same thing in my place. but I have a monitor hung in the booth for lyrics. keyboard n mouse so I can produce on the fly. but it gets hot as shit in there man

  • @MrMaddrapskillz

Right on...yeah, I keep the heat down by using a fluorescent bulb. And instead of a monitor, I put in a black light. I print my lyrics out and they glow bright as hell in there! It still gets pretty warm, though...tight place...curtains and foam all around...

I need to go ahead and reshoot this thing since I have an HD camera now (and a light inside). Just been lazy.

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • Wow.. I was just thinking about doing something similar before I came across this video.

    Good lookin' out bro!

-Salvation Army.. Here I come! LoL

  • @jasonbournetodie

    Great minds think alike...

    Thanks for watching!

  • great videooo man

  • @mRstevieg100

    Thanks..and thanks for watching!

  • Thanks for the video. Trying to get started in VO and need to build a booth of my own on a limited budget.

  • @dhickievoice

Glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching! Keep me in mind for your future musical instrument needs...my store should be fully functional soon! cheapgearguy(dot)com

    CGG

  • Very helpful. Thanks for the video

No problem...glad you liked the video...

    Thanks for watching!

  • got the same epiphone les paul electric and applause acoustic lol exactly the same

  • @Crucial1s

Actually it's a Copley Acoustic/Electric...but basically the same thing. Love it!

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • hey man i made my booth for under 30 buck thx hahah i love it

  • @yankees101979

NICE! Well done! I'm glad you got some use out of the video!

    thanks for watching!

Keep me in mind for your future musical instrument needs! CheapGearGuy(dot)com is almost fully operational...the site's up, but I won't be selling all the brands for about another month or so.

    CGG

  • Haha I really liked this video. You seem like a pretty cool guy, and I felt bad when you said "its hard to do this all by myself," cause it reminds me of myself lol.

This actually helped me though, so thanks for your effort in making this :) Keep makin videos

p.s. I really like your gloves. They make you look like a professional wrestler, and sort of a burglar at the same time.

  • @KnockOut101inc

    HA HA...that was awesome!

Yeah, I love my gloves...they are almost exactly like the Clawz gloves I always wanted back in the late 80's when I used to skate.

I'm glad this video helped...I'm going to be redoing it in HD and in more detail...should be up soon.

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • He's out of the closet!!! hahahah

  • @TheYmBProduction

I knew someone had to say it eventually.

  • great video man!!

  • @yankees101979

Thanks...glad you like it and I hope it helps you out....I'm going to be redoing this video now that I have an HD camera and a light inside of the booth.

  • @CheapGearGuy Cant wait!!

  • whats ur opinion on a Reflection Filter????

  • @yankees101979

Honestly, I've never tried one, so I don't have an opinion. Sorry...

  • nice .

  • Outstanding video. Thanks for posting.

  • @IMrAdam

    Wow...thanks, man!

I plan on redoing this video very soon so I can show the inside (I have a light in there now..black light and regular)...plus I have an HD camera, so everything will look better and when I export he HD it will sound better too..

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • Your guitars are sick, your drums are awesome, your vocal booth is clever .... But where did you get that desk?

  • @trumpetdood

I got the desk at a thrift store. I saw the desk & it was $35, but I didn't have the money that day. Came back 2 days later when they were having a "half-off furniture" sale & thought, "I'm sure it's gone by now," but there it was! Picked it up (not a bolt missing) for $17. While we were there we asked if beds fall under furniture. "Yup". so we got a Cal King size bed & box spring (practically new) for $40. Tags still on! CHEAPGEARGUY! This is what I do!

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • @trumpetdood

By the way...the desk had the instructions and the brand...I can dig it out and find it...maybe they have a website where you can order yourself one...might take me a little while to find it, but if you were really interested, I could do that..although I doubt they'll be going for $17!! Wal-mart had a similar style desk for %99 a while back...you might check there. I'd do a search for "corner office desk"

  • dude sweet i actually thought about doing something like this rock on dude... i have yet to put any videos up because the spot is just dirty lol but im gettin it cleaned so ill have some comin... you rock dude keep up the good workin homie g money :D

  • @mybuickskill6979

Glad you liked the video. I've been doing this ever since I thought of it back in 1999, so every house I've rented since then has had a "vocal booth". Most have been larger than this one, but this one works. Keeps all the mechanical noise house (refrigerator, computer fans, heater, etc) out of my vocal tracks. I plan on redoing this video now that I have my HD camera and a light in the vocal booth, but it may be another week or so before I get to it.

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • so if i wanted to soundproof my whole room could i cover the walls in thick blankets like comforters and do my window by putting alot of blanket over it and same with my door?

  • @Bound4Glory1995

Sound PROOF? No...sound DEADEN, yeah...no problem. Sound proof would require A LOT...especially depending on what noise you have in your room that you're trying to keep in! Like drums or bass? NO WAY. You need A LOT more (their frequencies travel a lot more. Guitar or vocals? Possibly -proofed, but mostly -deadened.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • I use a condenser mic,,,I had been wondering if they were the best to record a vocal with. I use a fostex vf160ex recording board.

  • omg..$50 dude your amazing!i got 50 and i can go buy those stuff now.thanks alot.

  • @Okat0kat

Glad it helped, man! I hope you can fins the type of deal I did (curtains at 24 cents a panel), but if nothing else, I'm sure you can get quilts or blankets from Goodwill for around that cheap! Wal-MArt always has those foam bed pads for about $25-$30...so you should be good there, too!

Thanks for watching. Keep me in mind for your future musical instrument needs! My store should be fully operational soon!

    CGG

  • For some reason the egg carton covered wall's in Heehaw's "radio station popped into my mind. That also popped into mind when I seen a video on TV of a C&W artist recording in a full on anechoic chamber/studio. Thanks for posting.

  • @westkan

Yeah...I'm going to post a new video of the inside of the vocal booth since I finally got a light in there. Show exactly what I have going on in there.

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • Very interesting. Great vids. I wish I can see inside the closet. =)

  • @DJSoNHustle

I'm actually about to redo this video...so that everything is visible...I finally got a light in there...

    Thaks for watching!

Keep an eye out for the commercial announcing the grand re-opening of my store (right now we're only selling guitars and basses, but we're about to start selling mics, mixer....EVERYTHING)!

    CGG

  • what about a how to soundproof your room for cheap?

I heard the difference when using eaphones. Actually kinda neat.

  • @psycotheguitarist

You could do basically the same thing (I'm guessing you're meaning how to make your WHOLE room soundproof?) but instead of covering the ENTIRE wall, cut the bed foam into squares (about 1' X 1') and make a checkerboard all over your room. YES, it will take A LOT of bed foam, but your room will definitely deaden out...kill off the reverbs....BUT, you could always make a "makeshift" vocal booth by constructing 3 short walls tall enough to be taller than your mic (cont.'d)

  • @psycotheguitarist

...and then you drape some HEAVY blankets (quilts, comforter, etc.) over them. Make sure the walls form a shape like this: \_/ AROUND your mic. It won't be as effective as a booth, but it WILL give you a better/clearer sound and it's mobile/removable so that you still have your room. Just put it away when you don't need it!

    Hope this helps!!

    Thanks for watching! CGG

  • I definitely heard a difference--I'm inspired. Thanks for the great ideas, buddy. Keep up the good work!

  • @daveeeed99

This concept works even better in a bigger closet? but I'm working with what I've got, ya know? I'm just trying to help anyone else who is trying to do the same...whether what you have is a tight budget or a small closet...this video just happens to help both!

Thanks for watching and I hope this video helped!

    CGG

  • honestly i didn't hear a difference..

  • @TheEricChristensen

Then this probably isn't for you.

    Thanks for watching.

    CGG

  • @CheapGearGuy hahaha whatever @TheEricChristensen

CGG, BIG difference in the vocal quality between the open room and the vocal booth... thanks for the how-to, its a big help bro. Justfound your page yesterday and have been going through your reviews and I'm liking what you're saying and reviewing.. keep it up sir

  • @josephfrancis0

Thanks for watching and thanks for the support. My store should be up and running in full force very soon! We'll focusing on the less expensive, good quality gear for people (like myself) on a tight budget who still want to make great music.

I'll be doing more "how to-es" in the future when I get more gear!

Keep an eye out for new vids coming in about a week or so...& if these loans get approved, there will be a TON of new videos in about a month!

    Thanks again for watching!

    CGG

  • that helped man thanks

  • @datboiteardrop

I'm glad it helped man! Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • whats that mic called?

  • @waveyboss123

    That's a Behringer C-1.

  • thanks bro

  • @Finalgdog54

    Glad it helped...thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • ...big thick... big thick

  • Hello. I have a space, about 5'x5' under a porch in the basement. It is surrounded by cement on all 6 sides. If I invested in curtains and foam for this room, would I expect to get similar results versus "curtaining" up an area enclosed in drywall and insulation?

  • @jburt1992

Well, there's 2 things here. Normally concrete would reverberate inside A LOT more, but deaden the sound outside A LOT more than drywall (just simple density, ya know?), but if you put up foam & curtains (blankets...WHATEVER), you will probably get an even MORE deadened sound than what you hear in this video. Plus you probably won't hear a peep outside of your booth (depending on the door).

Thanks for watching & keep an eye out for my online store (coming SOON)!

    CGG

  • if you really want good sound you need real studio foum. its not about the shape of that the foam is cut in its about the density of the foam.

  • @david105396

Being honest? The people interested in my way doing things are trying to get the lowest cost solution. OF COURSE going with the higher grade studio foam would be better. WHY ELSE WOULD PROFESSIONAL STUDIOS USE IT & NOT MY METHOD? This is ONE way to get a BETTER sound than just recording in an untreated room. Is it perfect? NO. Is it CHEAP? %#&* YES IT IS! And it WORKS (more importantly). If it's not for you, it's not for you. FINE. Don't use this method. Everyone else? IT WORKS

  • @david105396

ALSO, if you do some research in to Room Acoustics, you will see that the SHAPE of the foam IS important. That's why the "professional" sound deadening foam is jaggedy and angled. Sound Deadening 101 clearly states that you should have NO parallel walls or angles. Parallel walls and angels allow for reverberation (or echo) and thus not TRULY sound deadened. The "egg crate" (bed foam) is perfect because it is so uneven. Density does help, though...

    Thanks for watching!!

    CGG

  • @david105396 The surface texture plays a huge role in the sound, please don't post misleading lies.

  • @Conkyproductions

Is this to me or to (CheapGearGuy) or that David guy?

  • @CheapGearGuy The other guy lol.

  • hey thankz this is good i tryed it n its works really good,

  • @YoungJames2011

    AWESOME...glad it helped!

Just out of curiosity, how much did you end up paying?

Thanks for watching and keep an eye out for my online store (coming soon)!

  • where can i get that type of microphone like the whole set of the microphone

  • @ramonjr28

The mic is a Behringer C-1. Many stores carry it. Hopefully I'll be an official Behringer dealer once I get my online store up and running (shouldn't be too long now). The mic costs only $45 and the stand was $20 for a 2 pack of boom stands. The CAD pop filter was another $15. The main pricey item was my Phonic Firefly audio interface ($150), but as you can hear from the sound, WELL WORTH IT!

If you have anymore questions, email me from my main page!

    Thanks 4 watching!

    CGG

  • Thanks! This really helped a lot! Especially for a newbie like myself who is new to recording.

  • I live in a basement suite, and upstairs are hard asses, and i am pretty much always recording metal, which involves screaming. what could i do to my closet so they couldnt hear me, as much so i dont get kicked out! :D

  • @hardyboyztoextreme

That all depends on your budget. If you have a REALLY good budget, what you could do is get some of that professional sound deadening material (you know, like they line car interiors with) and line your closet with it. No one would hear ANYTHING outside of your closet AT ALL. If that's not in your budget, you could go a bit cheaper with some of that memory foam? It's density would SUCK UP the sound, but run you about $100 or more. I'll e-mail you.

    CGG

  • great video - excellent

  • @BOGZASV8MA

I'm glad you liked it and I hope it helped!

Thanks for watching! Keep an eye out for my store...we just finished up the business plan and can begin applying for grants and loans! Shouldn't be too long now and we'll be online!

    CGG

  • Hey man, I was wondering how it kills the noise level, My big thing is trying to get it so Im not getting yelled at when Belting out, so I want to make it super quiet for the area around the booth. And I laughed when I seen this cause this is exactly what I was going to do, studio in my closet. And I live in MI, where you live at? If you/your store is close when you get it up I would come and buy from you.

  • @BSalvation I am in MI, too!

It's going to be an online only store (for now). If I build up enough of a customer base, I may actually open a "brick & mortar" store front, but for now I'll keep my overhead low & just sell online!

This way (the way in the video) helps to keep the noise down A BIT. It's not perfect, but it DEFINITELY (especially if you also treat the door) brings the volume down. If you have more questions, e-mail me!

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • canadian??

  • @reallybored32

Nope. I'm not far from Canada. Michigan...but I was born in California, grew up in Louisiana...now living and loving Michigan.

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • what mic is that i want it how much is it?

  • @istrudave

That is the Behringer C-1. It costs...$40...nice, eh? I did a review on it if you wanna check it out some more.

I will be stocking them in my store once I get it up and running!

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • thanks for the tips, but you sound sad when you talk but your vids still kick ass

  • @cheeznizt

Yeah, that's just my voice. People say I look angry all the time, too...but I think it's just the way my mouth curves down that makes me look angry and my voice is deep and I'm always tired, ya know? Especially in this video...hadn't slept in over 24 hours! Insomnia's a PAIN.

Anyways, thanks for watching and keep an eye out for my store (coming soon)!

    Take it easy!

    CGG

  • This has been so helpful, I love your videos! People are always going on and on about buying this hecka expensive foam but the way you've done it sounds just as good, and it's cheap so that's wicked! x

  • @InsanityMuch

    Thanks...I'm glad this helped you!

Just remember, this isn't the ONLY way to make a vocal booth out of your closet, but it will work.

Thanks for watching! More coming soon!

    CGG

  • god i wish i had a room to record in.

  • @TheGonzaloDiaz

You don't have any room to record in? I basically converted one of the bedrooms in my house into a studio...and I LOVE mine. That little "coffee house" corner I have set up...it's like...MAN...so awesome. I can just kick back and play any time I want...it's LUSH.

One of the many benefits of having your own place! :)

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • @CheapGearGuy sounds so good, right now i'm recording in a very small room which i also live in, but it gets the job done till i get my own place. Very nice Coffee House, i remember the old room and this is a great improvement.

  • @TheGonzaloDiaz

    Yeah...it's lush.

Thanks for watching enough to know the difference between the two locations, by the way!

    CGG

  • @CheapGearGuy no problem, been a long time follower. By the way, how is the shop coming along?

  • @TheGonzaloDiaz

Nicely...business plan is just about finished...next step is loans...once I get approved for the loans (fingers crossed) I can order all the things I need to review. Hopefully won't be more than a month more and I'll be up and running and ready to get everybody the same cheap deals I get! :)

Thanks for asking! I've been hoping that there are enough people out there interested in cheap gear that I'll be able to support myself. I'm not trying to get rich, just get by, ya know?

    CGG

  • @CheapGearGuy I'm hoping to buy soon, but would be kinda ironic, a rich cheap gear guy haha. well, i got my fingers crossed for you, good luck! P.S. Tell me if that fretless marlin is going up for sale!!!!

  • @TheGonzaloDiaz

Yeah...I don't know if that bass'll go up. I know I want to carry fretless basses, but that Marlin is pretty nice...and $20?! Are you kidding me?! That's reason enough to keep it :) Just to tell the story, ya know?

Anyways...I do plan on having CGG's Secret Stash where I will silent auction used gear (or stuff I get ridiculous deals on...I just happen to be at the right place at the right time for some reason!). I'll have people email what their bid is and highest wins it.

    CGG

  • @CheapGearGuy haha, i know i remember us having a conversation about the bass. Wish i'd get a deal like that for a fretless, it just sounds so smooth, i like it way better than the sound tests i've heard on rouge and squier basses.

  • Right on ... Right on...

  • @tricountymusiccenter

    Thanks for watching!

    CGG

  • hi stranger... :) would love to hear a wee demo of some music and vocals with your new booth , that would be great.

  • @mrbassman25

Yeah, I was about to tell you about the "How to Mic an Acoustic" and I saw that you already watched it!

Thanks for watching! Hope it helped out!?

    CGG

  • @CheapGearGuy

awesome, you're a gent !! and that was just what i was hoping for. :) thanks

  • @mrbassman25

    Glad I could help!
