Is this the Pagai noon Ryu that was founded by Mr. Itokazu and Mr. Kinjo who both trained under Mr. Kanyei Uechi (Uechi Ryu Karate Do)? And if not what is the lineage of this Pagainoon. Thank you for your time. Osu
@1banryukyu Shihan trained under Kinjo Takashi Sensei, who trained under Uechi Kanei Sensei. There are several "offshoots" of Uechi Ryu, Pwang Gai Noon/Pangainoon being the one considered closest to the Chinese origin.
Thank you for your reply. If I understand this Pagai Noon Ryu lineage, Mr. Shu Shi Wa taught Mr. Uechi Kanbun who taught his (1st) son Uechi Kanyei who then taught Mr. Kinjo Takashi (who in 1978 started this offshoot of Uechi Ryu that also has Kobudo in it) who then taught Ms. Bolz(who is the Karateka on this video)? Did Ms. Bolz train in Okinawa Ken, Japan? Osu
@1banryukyu She was an interpreter in Japan and had already received sho dan (I don't know if any higher) in wado ryu while living in Kochi, then later went to Naha to train with Kinjo Sensei. Our karate class does not do kobudo, since that school is through Matayoshi Sensei -- we have kobudo separately; if you look at my other videos, you will see Shihan Nishiuchi teaching this.
She may have done that in the past, but she is too busy with her acupuncture clinic to do that - all her students come to the dojo. These videos are for current students and for those in another martial art or karate school to get an idea of an Okinawan form.
Sensei Bolz is quite strong and skilled. She appears, at times, to be "pushing" the strikes not letting them "flow". There is a slight forward motion of her head when she strikes. There are those who would argue that it is better to eliminate such excess head movement. Sensei Bolz brings her striking hand very far across before chambering. Some would state that striking hand should not extend so far. These comments are no more than observations.
There is nothing wrong with the stuff this lady is showing. Pwang Gai Noon /Uechi Ryu not a lot of difference. Its hard core. That hard core some of you guys posting couldnt even manage 20 seconds of maki wari training.
Pwang gai noon ryu is part of the uechi ryu "family", so this is the san chin we learn, but a video doesn't cover all the aspect you need to learn it well - *that* video would run into the hours, not a few minutes, to review the finer details of each position, move, and breath.
Isn't this a little bit light hearted for Kata Sanchin? I realize its not the original Kata, but still where's the breathing and the tension? No disrespect meant, I'm just curious.
Perhaps you have "kata" and "hojo-undo" confused? Anyway, watch videos of Okinawan masters and you will see pronounced breathing, as well as a contrast of tension and relaxation - this is actually why this is the one karate kata Shihan teaches to her kobudo class, too. Anyone who teaches a budo without emphasis on breathing is doing a disservice to the art. You'd be amazed how many sho dan don't know kokyuho!
And very intimidating in "battle mode"! You wouldn't know it just talking to her or when she does acupunture (she does Traditional Chinese Medicine), but the change in ki when performing martial arts is impressive!

@hempev Thank you for helping me get a better understanding of the diaspora of Okinawan Karate from Okinawa to the rest of the world. Osu

Movement is very intricate and detailed. Lot of information, I can see why Uechi Ryu only has eight kata. OSU!

The kata hojoundo were created as an intermediate step between hojoundo and kata, and allow you to practice moves to both left and right.

Very interesting. I learned a version of Sam Chien from Five Ancestors Fist. This is the most similar form of Sanchin to that form.
Thanks for posting it.

Her video would be fruitful for many Uechika.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

She is a sensei in the general sense, but also a Shihan, which is what *we* refer to her. That title is given to those who teach other teachers.

No, but thanks for paying such close attention - you'll need that to learn anything.
