I was there last year. I figure 90% of the people there were there just to party. I'm sure there were groups who viewed it as a religious or special experience, but they were few and far between. Anyway, quite an interesting experience, similar in oddity to Chichen Itza on the equinox, with the Sun worshipers.

Stonehenge was built by the native people of Britain over 5000 years ago. it is designed to show the connection between the sun and the moon. the old peoples worshiped the sun and their biggest day was December 22nd (the darkest day of the year) since that was the best time to hunt. they hunted at night to gain advantage over the larger game. The moon represents the new ways off agriculture and not the nomadic life of the stone age. by celebrating on the longest day pagans show they are clueless

@kargenlewis i saw something that was putting forward a slightly different reason, the theory was that it was built for worship of the moon ( the same alignment is supposed to happen with the moon as with the sun, dont remember what day of year tho ) but the moon being that they would hunt at night and the moonlight was considered a hunting aid. unfortunately i cant remember what the program was.
