Daisy eneded up with Tom Buchanan mainly because he, unlike Gatsby at the time was rich. As Gatsby is unable to express his love for her in a verbal, he buys expensive, luxurious items to impress her. Daisy understands this, which makes her cry, as she looks at how many 'beautiful shirts' he has, along with his new wealth, she cries.

Notice Gatsby's closet, that's how he's supposed to dress throughout the entire movie, that's significant in understanding Gatsby... that he doesn't know how to act socially. Some points are just supposed to stay in the scripts :)
