  • Thought is was great - !

  • I hate to tell you dr. did not play on Time wont let me, nor did he do the solo, the guys name was al austin, and he passed away in the late 60's

  • @Becomeyourbestself

It was extremely common for even established bands to use studio musicians to record for them. The bands were often present for guidance and I believe that was the case here. The Dr. here was a studio musician in Cleveland and recorded at least a demo of this song. It might have been rerecorded later, but it certainly sounds like him & his Guild.

  • @Becomeyourbestself It says "As Demonstrated". It does not say that this man played on the original recording. It is well known that Al Austin did the fabulous guitar work on this classic.

  • You guys and your comments crack me up - don't you realize that Dr. Joe is the one who actually played the solo on Time Won't Let Me as a studio musician early in his career ? Yes , it's true .

  • @garystrat ......... Where do you get your information from? Really cuz I would love to know. The gutiar player on the record was named Al Austin and he committed suicide because right after the song was recorded and signed by Capitol records, Mr. Austin's father forbid him to tour with the band. So he ran his car into a train. Next time get your fact's straight

  • LOL! I am sure this gentleman is a very good guitar player, but...have played in bands forever--learned this one when it was new. Its not even a challenge! Again no disrespect: this is just pablum Sixties guitar--probably done with those in mind not familiar with the genre. Check out some old Lonnie Mack or Ike Turner! LOL

BTW, the singer in the Outsiders, Sonny Gervase (SP?) also sang "Precious & Few" w/ Climax.

  • @pepperdineu1

I appreciate your input in that this is not a particularly difficult song to play. This was a paid production done for a specific project. It was posted to You Tube by request. How can I say no to that?

  • @wado1942 I understand completely. I wouldn't have said no either! LOL Further down, you talk about using a Vox AC15. Sweet amp. Have you ever played through a Fender Blues Deluxe?

Rock guitar has developed considerably over the last forty years, and in the Sixties, I played leads very similar to this. Most seems based on Chuck Berry leads .Just pretty simple to play--especially compared to, say, Steve Vai's stuff...

  • @pepperdineu1

I'm rather fond of my Vox. I haven't played a Blues Deluxe, I'm not a guitar player. A friend of mine had one at one time though. Got pretty good sound out of it too. But yeah, guitar has changed quite a bit over the years. I think it's regressed recently, though there's certainly exceptions!

  • Thank you master, I played this in the sixties but I forget the solo, you refresh me each note.

  • this is good. i just found out that i was related to sonny geraci. he's my grandpas nephew. i look forward to meeting him

  • LOL someone commented about it being great that an "old guy" can perform this.

This guy was probably a bit younger or maybe the same age than the guys in the Outsiders when the song came out.

  • @JFinSD2

He was about 12 when he recorded the song. Studio musicians are of all ages. You wouldn't believe how many rock tunes had the bass recorded by a 50-60 year old woman.

  • On target video. It's great to see an old guy with an abundance of performing talent share his analytical wisdom on a classic piece of popular music. You are a real sage. Maybe you should adopt a pen name of Dr. Baldass. I think it has profitable commercial potential. With the quality of your product and that name, the memory burn in customers should be deep.

  • what kind of amp is being used here? sounds great!

  • @PeterCRissKISSgod

It's a Vox AC15, probably with an SM57 about 20CM away. There's also some leakage of the guitar into the voice mic which is an Audio-Technica 815b. You can see the tip of that mic at 1:10.

  • that is very cool...you really hit it brother...

  • excellent thanks

  • Thank you, the exact construction of this song's solo has mystified me for ages.

  • Thanks for this lesson. Do you know the bassline as well? I have had a hard time learning it as it is quite complicated.

  • It's not as complicated as you think. It's basically a harmony to the guitar. I don't know it note for note but I could post a quick clip if you like.

  • Thanks for responding. If it wouldn't be too much of a hassle, I would really appreciate if you could post a clip showing the bassline. Thanks again. By the way that is a way cool guitar you are playing. is it a Guild Bluesbird?

  • Yes, that's a Guild. Don't know which model but it's THE guitar from the song. Unfortunately, that's not me playing it.

  • It is a 1957 Guild Aristocrat and is often referred to as the "bluesbird". Since this posting, I have restored the script "Guild" on the headstock to replicate the original. What you see here was a temporary decal.

  • Great easy to follow lesson. I wish there was more good clear lessons like this on the tube.

Great old rock and roll sound from that guitar as well.

    Cheers!

  • It is like sitting in the room watching you play. It is great. Some day we just might surprise you and come see you perform in Boise. I can always dream of another trip. Way to go.

  • Hello dignbat,

So where are you? Very far?

    joe

  • Hi Bill,

I'm sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. Things have been hectic at the university and in life.

Thanks for the kind words, I enjoyed doing the video and working with my son who owns GCM Recording.

What other songs would you like to learn?

    dr.joe

  • Dr. Joseph,

I cannot express the degree to which I was flabbergasted to discover such a wonderful lesson on the lead of a song I have always wanted to know how to play.

There are some other leads I'd love to ask you how to do, but I won't at this time.

I don't want to take away from the supreme appreciation I feel for your being nice enough and talented enough to demonstrate, "Time won't let me."

    Thank you. Bill Force
