  • Dude, you sound like Val Kilmer in Real Genius. MINUS SEVEN! OHH!

  • Awww man yo. You are awesome, only saw one vid but i'm subscribing lol. Helpful vid by the way.

  • where did you get the threshhold of 12?

  • @DeAngelo990 the input signal was peaking at -2db the threshold was set at -12 therefore (12-2) the remainder is 10. there is 10db of signal that will be processed by the compressor.

  • @elijahlucian wow fast reply thanx=]

  • @DeAngelo990 it was so i could have an even number to work with.

  • Where did you get the remainder 10 from? thank you

  • @samnang9393 the input signal was peaking at -2db the threshold was set at -12 therefore (12-2) the remainder is 10. there is 10db of signal that will be processed by the compressor.

  • MINUS 7 OH HE WAS RIGHT!!!!! AGH OMG OMG OMG! XD

  • When the bassline drops my beat is getting compressed...

    Whats the problem?

  • @laurin123 do you have a limiter on your master channel? if so. take it off. basicaclly your bass is hitting the master output harder than the beat is.

  • @elijahlucian

yeah i replaced it with an EQ. works better now

Thanks alot. very useful video btw!

  • @laurin123 anytime man. glad you liked it. im going to be making more mid november going more into fl10 and its new features so check them out.

  • So is Fruity Limiter basically just a compressor then?

  • @CHEEZwhizSLURPIE yep. I've told them that the name is misleading. should be fruity dynamics or something. but they never listen to me. it is a limiter and a compressor.

  • still dnt gt it!!!!!y would u set it in the bigining at -12 in the frst place,

  • @lynizile ok. i chose -12 because my peak was at -2. that leaves a remainder of -10 which makes for easier math.

    a ratio of 2:1 would divide my 10 db remainder by 2 = which leaves 5. so -12 + 5 = -7db. watch it again. you'll get it.

  • I'm still kinda noobish to digital music creation and I kinda get it now, though don't yet fully understand the meaning of it yet outside of guitar and voice etc. It seems as if it wouldn't be useful if you'd be using the sequencer with samples and volume/velocity levels you are happy with, is that correct? Or could someone name me a purpose for it in let's say a piano song with a VST and proper volume/velocity levels, aside from making high velocity levels the same volume as lower velocities?

  • I've had fl 9 now 10 prod ed, for bout 2 yes and I've learnt more watching your bids in the last hour than I have in 2 years , thanks

  • @marcooni03 thanks dude! I'll make sure to make more vids!

  • where did the -12 threshold come from? is it from the -2DB or is it just random

  • @fopchinees its just an example that i used for this specific tutorial. the threshold is dependant on the level of the input signal.

  • and by the way, why do you say 10? is that like a standard somewhere in the db meter or compressor? is 10 like the set value for whatever?

  • Let's say I have a kick, a bass, and a sub bass. Should I sidechain the sub bass to the kick and bass to whenever the kick and bass hit the sub is gone but it fills the space in between the kick and bass when they're not hitting? Yes?

  • Hahaha I like you

  • if u press 9 he sounds like that dude that does the geico commercials on hulu

  • hey man. this will be in my next video...

If your transient is faster than the attack, then the compressor won't be effective...

a 12 threshold is very very hard... you don't need a huge ratio. 10:1 is basically as strong as a limiter.

  • ok I thought I'd try something more consistent...used 3xosc sin wave... starting at -2, compression with -12 threshold 2:1 ratio brought it to -6.0

  • maybe I did something wrong, but I had to turn the ratio to 5:1 before I got it down to -7. I started with a repetitive kick drum at -2, and added compression with -12 threshold just like you did. It only took it down to -5. Gain not a factor, set at 0

  • @SpiceyGrooves I just tried it with a snare starting at -2, threshold -12 2:1 ratio, it brought the peak down to only -4

  • Thanks for the video tips guy, I have glossed over some basic compression things before but this video made it 'click'. Very entertaining personality too.

  • You clearly dont know what your talking about

  • @pppeeeppee that's for sure. i should go shoot myself.

coming from a guy named "pee pee"

    ...

  • @elijahlucian What does my USERNAME WHICH IS NOT MY REAL NAME have to do with "you clearly don't know what your talking about"

  • @pppeeeppee hahaha

    EVERYTHINGGGGG

  • @elijahlucian ah ha I see so you think my USERNAME is my real name. So not only do you not know what your talking about but your a complete idiot

  • @pppeeeppee yeah... that must be it. your parents defiantly named you peepee....

since you seem to have no idea how the world works, let me introduce you to a few social norms. When you have a name like "pee pee" (which is a 5 year old's slang for the male genitalia) don't expect anybody to take you seriously. ever. Thus it's clear that you're just a troll, and YOU, sir, are the one who does not know what you're talking about.

    oh... and a complete idiot.

  • @elijahlucian Actually whats clear is that your a retarded 25-30 old virgin who has nothing else better to do. Thats why you make that stupid little "FL NOOBZONE.. OMG" voice. Why dont you just try and stop replying to me and just learn about limiting and compression. Obviously you dont know what your talking about. I wouldnt just say you dont know what your talking about just to say it there is a reason behind that. I know more then you think and I understand that you need to defend youself

  • @pppeeeppee all i can do is lol.

sorry dude. if you think you can come up with a better way of explaining compression go ahead.... chances are you cant, you're just full of it.

  • sources :

    mastering: the art and science

    modern recording techniques

    mixing engineers handbook

go read a book noob. or just watch my vids :P

  • @elijahlucian Oohh I see so you googled limiting and compression books... Ahh I see because I googled the same thing and those 3 results popped up as well

  • @pppeeeppee ....

    .....

why would I have to google, when they're sitting on my shelf? unlike you I read books.

anyways im done with you, hater. you have no skills.

  • @elijahlucian You mean "why would I have to google when they aren't books I havent read nor own"

  • @pppeeeppee ...

  • @pppeeeppee lol?

  • yo noob, do a video on how to get your final mix to the 0db point

  • what's the point of that? that will simply make the signal clip on most players. it's better to limit the output at -0.1. also, as you probably know already, peak level doensn't really have anything to do with loudness.

    noob :P

  • @elijahlucian =[, I just wanted to know a good peak to export my music at, i know it might be a subjective topic ie the loudness wars, but just a general opinion would be nice to hear, and I cant wait =]

  • @AeonFlexMusic hehehe well. set fruity limiter's limter threshold (ceil) knob to -0.1 for a start. then turn up the gain knob up to the point to when you hear the limiter "ducking" turn it down a bit and you should be just about there. turn down the REL a bit from the default

if not... turn off the limiter and check your mix. make sure your levels are perfect then try again.

hehe i'm just busting your balls man! thanks for checking the vid, I'll make a thread on how to make your music louder.

  • oh, p.s. I will. hahaha.

  • great video

  • Dude you sound like duke nukem.

  • @ave383 hahaha SHAKE IT BABY!

  • awesome voice yeah!! XDD

  • fuckin awesome voice :D

  • How do I know when I have enough compression?

  • I posted this on the IL forums, but just in case you missed that:

Why did you subtract the threshold (-12) in the 2nd example, instead of 2 (or 4), like in the first example where you subtracted the answer -2 from -5?

  • Thanks for that. Follows on well from the FL Guru Anatomy of compression video.
