  • This is the greatest interpretation on here. You've let the music lament while still paying attention to rhythm-- the thing that has grinded me most about every other interpretation is the disregard of the rhythm. Your diminuendos are spectacular and the entrances are so delicate. Amazing :)

  • I like this very much and prefer it to Galway's over showy version too! One small criticism: the music is so good that you don't need so many distracting images going on as well!!

  • This is so fluid and organic, it unfolds like one long and serene breath with so much inner energy yet so unconstrained. The artistry "hides" the technique yet every element works in perfect balance. This is my benchmark performance and I hope I can get within range of doing it as effectively as you. Bravo!

  • I agree so far this is the best interpretation performance I have heard of this song. I assume you played this yourself. You beat Galways! Just what I was looking for. I played this as a performance piece myself in my younger days and had no clue what to do with it and today connecting the emotional piece together of what it should sound like combining heart, body, soul.   • I just have to say: just listened to Galway playing this, and he ruined it. TOTALLY. How come everyone seems to play it this "way", but Galway chose to ruin Debussey.!!!!!

  • One of my students played this as her solo for Trinity G8, her interpretive performance scores were almost 100%. The whole piece is meant to be flexible with the rhythm, just as a swan. Interpretation is open to suggestion, but I like to think that I brought out her inner understanding of inceptive understanding of the composers thoughts, thus enabling her to interpret and perform this piece to a willing audience. Every piece of music has it's critics and lovers alike, let those that enjoy the

  • I have to say, this is the best performance of this piece. Many flutists take too many freedoms with the beat of the piece and they make it non existent. If you listen carefully, you can tell that Zaralli's sixteenth notes stayed the same value throughout the entire piece (except for the rubato section, which was meant for flexibility with the beat). Other flutists sound really pretty, but ultimately, they did not play what Debussy asked for.

  • Lovely. I think the idea in this piece is to NOT stick to the printed rhythms and to simply use the notes as a guide. Also, written music doesn't convey everything, e.g. how long should that pause between phrases really be? One second, two seconds? It's the player's choice - and not marked on the written music. It's supposed to sound like an improvisation, not like a classical musician sight-reading printed music.

  • At last someone plays this work as the composer wrote it..I don't know him, but he has been absolutely faithful to the printed rhythms. Bravissimo!

  • Why do you cut off the phrases so aggressively? Breathe and enjoy...you have a beautiful tone...remember this is a lament not an aria.

    just write the word FREAKOLLO, and you would get to a piccolo concerto and enjoy :)

    as for your Piccolo issue, try the bass flute write "The Western East" and have fun.

  • in response to this being "easy"or "difficult" to play: the notes are easy, but conveying the expression is NOT, hence, this is not an easy piece. This is nicely done. Calm and introspective...Thank you for posting it and for taking your time! :-)

  • very nice recording. though no offense, but i think the beginning is a bit too fast.. vibrato was REALLY good though. Syrinx is supposed to be an impressionist piece so dont go too fast in the beginning

  • I have played this piece before and this was played wonderfully. The great thing about this piece is that it is really open to interpretation, you play it how you feel it.

  • @cezikins not completely true to keep the integrity of piece you have to play it in the french style that DeBussy composed it in. I know I played this at a competition did very well but that was one of the comments I got is it was a little slow.

  • This does sound nice but there were times where i thought that the dynamics where too low, but that is because i am comparing this performance to Sir James Galways performance of Syrinx.

    There are parts where i lost the time as well, and too long a pause. Not a good thing when you are trying to tell the story from an Ancient Greek Myth (story below).

  • My daughter wrote this as an intro to this piece- In Greek mythology, Pan was a half goat, half man god who ruled over the woods and pastures of Arcadia. Returning from hunting one day, he spotted a beautiful wood nymph named Syrinx. Unfortunately for him, she proclaimed herself a virgin for life and fled as he pusued her. Syrinx came to the Landon River, and no longer able to escape from Pan, she asked the water nymphs to change her form.

  • Just as Pan laid hands on her, she turned into river reeds. Knowing the reeds were once lovely Syrinx, the grief stricken Pan, longing to hold her, cut the reeds into different lengths, fastened them together and named the musical instrument after Syrinx. Also called the Pan flute, after the god himself.

    Claude Dubussy wrote "Syrinx" based on Pan's lament over losing his love. This piece was the first unaccompanied flute solo of the

    20th century and is a popular piece of flute repertoire.

  • I like the way you play this. It's very clear and clean, the only thing that I didn't like was the trills. That might just have been your interpretation, I don't know, but it was just a little too harsh for me. So, that aside, it was very good, and I applaud you.
