  • This was very sweet... I am a Michigander, too, and can relate to some of your stories. It sounds like you had the idyllic upbringing of the typical American boy born in the 50s... what a great blessing! Thanks for the video.

  • Thanks so much for this video. I just finished reading Grogan's autobiography for the 3rd time and it is wonderful reading; he's such a good writer! I've always wondered what his neighborhood looked like. "Marley and Me" is a great book (and movie) and "The Longest Trip Home" is right up there with it.

  • Detroit is STILL great!!!!

  • Wow....that was amazing and I loved the ending. So SO true. Can't wait to read the book.

  • dude your house needs to have the bushes trimmed.

  • I brought Lucky home to Trouble who was also a rescue who was abandoned. I washed Lucky who was covered in ants and fleas and fed him. I put him in our second bathroom where he hid under the toilet. He was so scared. The next day I took him to the Vet where he was given a worming but was too young for shots. I took him outside and watched from the window. Trouble built an instant protective friendship with Lucky. The next thing I noticed they were wrestling and playing with Trouble's football.

  • His descriptions in the book are dead on. It is the way I imagined it. Loved both books and I am waiting for his next book. He has a way with a story that few have. I have four dogs and I seem to always have had dogs in my life. My favorite duo was Lucky and Trouble. I called them bad luck and Trouble my only friends. Trouble started out wonderful but in his second year got separation anxiety and tore our house apart. When I rescued Lucky from being run over by cars. He was emaciated.

  • wow interesting....btw was that dog Shaun on his photos from childhood?

  • @emms232 i think so.

  • Just finished Longest Trip Home. Outstanding.....great writer you are, John!

  • @cbr1100xxrules i'm reading it and i'm like on page 285 almost finishing it.

  • The Flynns. John, we grew up, all five Flynn kids, right across the street from the Grogans. Great to see your nation-wide success and the recognition it has brought to Erie Drive; truly one of the best places on Earth. Enjoy your success my friend. Timothy P. Flynn

  • Thanks for posting this video showing off our small slice of paradise. I too had a "first" down at the Outlot; I proposed to my wife last Fall on the red picnic table seen in the video.

  • Hi John this is Deborah Templeton's daughter, Bridgette. It is so surreal seeing this video as I grew up in the same area and attended Our Lady of Refuge as well. My Mimi lived right next door to Refuge so I spent a lot of my childhood in your neighborhood. Anyways we are very proud of you. It's about time someone documented the "experience" of Our Lady of Refuge!!

  • I love your books! Marley and Me and The Longest Trip Home are my two all time favourite books - you're a very talented author. It was very nice to see this - great job!

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I just finished your memoir and loved it! It's very satisfying to put a video to the actual words I read. Very similar to what I pictured :)

  • @superduper11529 me too, what i pictured was almost the same i see in the video :-)

  • I finished the book "The Longest Trip Home" just minutes ago, and was surprised and glad to find this video by John posted so recently. This holiday season was especially sad and lonely for me, as I replayed my family Christmases of long ago. John's reflections on his dad's last months and dealing with the complex emotions associated with their relationship touched me deeply - and flashed me back to the final days and hours with my own father. John, I'm glad your mom continues to smile!

  • Just wanted to say the book was excellent! I grew up in Bloomfield Hills in the late 60's and 70's, so it was very cool to see this video. Especially having read the book. Roman (Dr.Franklin) is a family friend. My friend Sonya is a dietician and has helped care for John's mother at Lourdes. I loved the book Marley & Me, especially being a veterinarian. My father grew up in Pontiac and was a surgeon in the 50's,60's and 70's. I could relate to John's memoirs quite well...also raised Catholic.
