They are mostly quiet animals but when one is calling another or a parent is calling it's pups then I hear them. Have heard them argue also. The dad mostly when the pups are around and another adult comes too close.
me and some buddies spent the night in my back yard and heard that sound, we said it sounded like a dog with a frog lodged down its throat. my buddy heard it and chased it but it was too dark to make out what it was. so we've been calling it El Chupacabra, i told them it was brobably a gray fox because all we could make out was a grayish black figure, they're gonna feel like morons when they find out what it is.
I live in Tempe, Az and I actually just saw a Gray Fox by my apartment. It blows my mind that one would be this far into the suburbs.
