Whoever designed the bridge, and whoever oversaw the construction , such as the DOT has a lot of explaining to do. I have built bridges and the integrety is redundant. So no one failure can cause a failure like this. I saw that the frame was steel but it looked like a real cheaply built bridge. The frame is a strutt type that just looked weak to begin with. I believe they engineers goofed when calculating the forces on the span. Bridges everywhere are crumbling.

@Nato61 designing is seldom a problem. it's because of materials used during construction by the contractors and the workers building the bridge that this kind of accident happens. the specs of the codes during different era is also a concern. as far as i know, a simple fracture failure in the gusset that was holding bolts in one small connection triggered the collapse. it's unfortunate but not surprising at all. structural engineers know that these gusset and bolt failures can be catastrophic.
