One of the great perimeter defenders of all time.. Great player, who should probably be in the HOF.. his 0-14 performance in game 7 of the 1978 Finals has hurt his candidacy, I think?..
Actually I just found out he was finally elected to the Hall. I was unaware he was elected until reading some of these posts so my bad. It's about friggin time. RIP DJ.
Dennis Johnson was likely the most underrated player in NBA history and it's a joke he's not in the HOF. He spent his entire career on title contending teams that went deep in the playoffs year after year and he was the key reason why. Magic once said, "everyone likes to talk about the Bird/Magic rivalry but really my rivalry was with DJ." Any hoops fan with more than just a superficial knowledge of the game knows that DJ was the s*** and belongs in the HOF.
DJ and Danny Ainge- the backcourt that complemented each other to an amazing degree. The prototypical point guard and the prototypical shooting guard!
This guy was championship material. How can he be not in the Hall of Fame? The fact that he brought the NBA championship to Seattle unlike Kemp and Payton who busted badly and caused a major embarrasment to that city in the 94' playoffs should automatically qualify him plus he quarterbacked the Big Three in Boston for 2 more titles.Being a point guard takes a lot of responsiblity a challenge he certainly passed.
Growing up a kid in the Seattle area we all LOVED Slick Watts, Gus, Downtown Freddie Brown, Jack Sikma and a few others. DJ though had a coolness about him that was just badass above all. I think it was the way he just threw his body around the court playing the hardcore defense. No Brainer: DJ in the HOF! Rings with Sonics and Celts.
Longtime Boston Globe writer Bob Ryan says DJ's is the single most glaring and shameful omission we have going in the Hall of Fame. Nice to see others here who agree with him, as I do.
the fact that the HOF isn't strictly NBA doesn't have anything to do with it, and i actually like that its the "basketball HOF" it prevents the history from getting lost.
@evolutionarytic He was JUST A WINNER;IT'S THAT SIMPLE. shooting percentage always went up in the playoffs--those poke check steals he would do twice a game;(once in first quarter, once near the end of a close game)the suffocating defense on guys like Magic, the layup passes to Bird underneath----He would have made a great coach.....RIP
@evolutionarytic Your a frickin douche bag if you really think he shouldnt be in the HOF he was one of the most underrated players there was in the game!
DJ was the perfect player; great on both ends, athletic(in his prime)excellent ball handling and decision making. in Seattle, he was a leading rebounder from the guard position. it was impossible not to root for him, even if U didn't like his team. Dennis Johnson; one of the greatest!!
When DJ had the ball you knew it was in good hands, and he always made that first pass that started that gorgeous roulette wheel going.
DJ died far too young. He would have definitely made his mark as an NBA coach. I want to send out all my love to his family for their tremendous loss and just say thanks to you, VeoShock, for having the tremendous heart and basketball consciousness to put this tribute together. Thousands of Celtics fans have seen it but didn't login as its a pain intheass.
Thank you so much for this beautiful tribute to Dennis Johnson... the unheralded secret weapon of the "Larry Bird" Celtics... which was NOT a single-player team, but a real TEAM. Today's Celtics team members(2008) couldn't get a starting job on the 1980s Celtics (with the possible exception of Paul Pierce). DJ was the guy who always got the ball and put it in play to start off every offensive play for the Celts.
Dennis Johnson was my favorite Celtic player all-time. He had the same birthday as me (Sept. 18) and like me/according to a media guide he was an avid fan of the Three Stooges. According to sources, he was really respected by teammates. He was the perfect point guard for the C's in the 80s. Heck! Larry Bird called DJ the greatest teammate he ever had. RIP DJ3
Man, I hate to admit that I got a little choked-up watching this clip. See, I grew-up watching DJ with the Sonics, Suns and finally the Celtics. I'm a die-hard 76ers fan so I hate the Celtics, I've always respected them, but if you were brought up in the era that I was, you had to hate them. DJ was arguably the greatest defender I've ever seen. See, there are a lot of guys who get steals from cross-court passes, blind-siding an offensive player etc., but DJ used to take the ball right out of ...
... a ball-handler's hands and go in for an uncontested lay-up on the other end! A lot of people didn't see him in Seattle and Phoenix when he was athletic, he was a shot-blocker! DJ was cut from the same mold as guys like Walt Frazier, Michael Ray Richardson (before the tragic ending) and Joe Dumars, he was a threat on both sides of the ball and it is a foolish, stupid and complete travesty that he is not in the Basketball of Fame! Unbelievable!
Dennis was a great player. I really admire him as a human being. Much respect to him and his family as well as his fans. A Hall of Famer in my eyes forever.
I can't believe it took 10 years for him to get into the hall of fame. This guy should've been first ballot.

Yes. DJ is one of the smartest players ever to play.
The NBA needs its own Hall Of Fame and not be incorporated with the Basketball Hall Of Fame.

now this man dennis johnson is hands down the most underrated nba player in the history of the game
GSWCWATTS 2 years ago
id pick dennis johnson as 2nd guard on my all-time team over any -- any -- other guard in the history of the game
dont really care who the 1 guard would be either but dj is a must in the backcourt for me
& whoever the other guard was id trade straight up to get dennis on my team
oscar, west, jordan, magic you name 'em
id still take djohnson fo the deciding game
we might win we might lose but we would play it straight tough and fair
w/o a doubgt one of the best ever

I'm a Celtics fan from way back, and really miss the Golden Age with those great Celtic/Lakers games of the 80s.
DJ was a force - an outstanding player, especially on defense. My most sincere respects to him and his family, he will never be forgotten.
