  • Einfach nur genial und schön der Jonas Hellborg....

  • The bass sounds interesting.. but I think ergonomics were out of the question.. His right arm resting on the edge of that fat body for a whole show.. really poor design from a great bass builder. And having the bass so far away from you due to the bass thickness must be awful.

Jonas does some interesting stuff in this video, but I guess he is not my kind of bass player because he never caught my ears (not to mention I find his slap playing horribly un-musical).

  • this man is amazing.

  • such elegant playing

  • what scales is he using?great solo btw

  • @yogsothoth2099 i think i heard a bit of major maybe a bit minor too(but not quite sure) ;)

  • He reminds me Eric Clapton way of, Bass playing, I don't like Eric Clapton,,SO......Forget it....I miss you JACO....

  • Does he play with 3 fingers? (right hand)

  • I don't get how his signature model bass which costs thousands of dollars can be set up so badly to have fret buzz on almost every note, maybe it's just me but it drives me nuts.

  • @usedinpublic Thats deliberate. it's a sympathetic kind of rattle. It adds character. Nothing to do with a bad setup. Thats how i set my bass up.

  • @Olliemetal666 "it's a sympathetic kind of rattle" Love that Ollie. That's what 1 of my bass's suffers from. I thought of it as fret buzz. But now it will always be "sympathetic rattle" Thank you. }:0)

  • @usedinpublic It's because of his strong hand technique. If he wanted to, every single note on that fret board could come out crystal clear. Tone is in the hands, and chances are his action is set like that to give his playing more character. Dynamics son.

  • Could listen to him pluck all night! Great musician Bassist.

  • What a fantastic bass tone! Long live solo bass!

  • I saw him in a double concert in Mexico City: Metal Art Trio + Béla Fleck & The Flectones, and in one song Victor Wooten and Hellborg actually played together, it was amazing

  • i'm so glad my neighbor gave me that awesome jonas hellborg poster :D

  • Amazing

  • idol

  • Fantastic :)

  • i've never seen someone bend a bass string like that

  • I actually like this... now I miss my Warwick Corvette...

  • He`s a great Bass Player!... maybe because he looks like CHUCK NORRIS? XD

  • @locomusic If Chuck Norris played bass....... fill in your best chuck norris line here.

  • @plight420 I saw him with Mclaughlin in 80s He was a skinny little shit with long hair in a pony tail I had only barely heard of him at the time

He totally blew me and everyone else away. Got to meet them backstage and had a few Heineken's He was pissed off because someone ate his onion rings You would have thought he was Schwarzenegger the way he was ranting on saying he would kick the MF's ass who took his onion rings! We were all trying not to laugh, because he didn't think it was very funny

  • check out any Jonas Hellborg/Shawn Lane albums specially "icon" and his cd "Art Metal".

  • 2:44 - 4:10 is my favorite part, but hell this whole solo is amazing.

  • Many thanks Jorg for sending on....Have enjoyed listening ...Beautiful in every way

    XX Susan

  • 4 people need to replace the batteries in their hearing aids! Great chops and very musical!

  • This is truly a different level and way above those fast pro chops with lots of mistakes.

  • anyone know if this is an improvised piece or composed?

  • @BombsonBicycles The majority of it is probably improvised (though I can't be too sure), but played during the last few minutes is "You Have To Die To Live" from his album, The Silent Life.

  • Sweet...and no look how fast I can play...love his tone as well!!! No ridiculous trebly sound!!!!

  • This guy rocks it on bass guitar dude!

  • This video includes several references to Jonas' impressive solo CD, the silent life. If you guys enjoyes this, you should check out that great album.

  • @cachubiza

I got it, but it's out of print and hard to get my friend. Jonas is the man!

  • This guy kicks ass

  • i don't know how many times i've seen this solo...it just blows muy mind

  • one of the best of the best of the best bass play ever! what is this bass?

  • @izzionbass His signature model from Warwick, of course.

  • Wow, this is totally awesome!

  • Very cool. Nice use of chords. very heartfelt. One of the best. Still miss Shawn.

  • he's wearing it a bit high man, its nearly in his mouth

  • @Semimentalman2 it gives you a little more control and better access than when you have it down to your knees.

  • @raggedy i know that ay, but its its abit highfor an acoustic, plus he puts his face too close too it, & i never wear a bass at my knees,

  • @raggedy Actually the height of your bass either puts stress on your fretting hand or plucking/picking hand. If you wear it higher up your fretting hand is relieved of stress and allows you to fret faster; alternatively there is quite a bit of stress on your fingering hand, which slows down your plucking. The lower you wear your instrument more stress is added to your fingering hand and your plucking/picking hand loses some stress.

  • Toooo coool. I've been into Hellborg for quite some time now.

  • beautiful.

  • well this is the first time ive ever heard this guy. i like him more than victor wooten (im actually not too into victor) i like him more than stanley clark (love clark) i like his as much as micheal manring (probably my favorite) the only person i like more is jaco. this guy is automatically catapulted to the top of my favorites list

  • we have very similar views my good man. jaco, jonas, Claypool/Manring. check out John Ferrera from consider the source.

  • alright i deff check him out. thanks for the recommendation!

  • Damn, now that's pure talent and nothing else.

  • @BLACKMAGICMETALMAN12

    and lot of practice

  • hellborg is my favourite bassist.

  • I was just at summer NAMM, and that bass rig kicks some ass!!!

  • sorry, champ. can't get the same sound out of anything else.

also: his bass is the tits, straight up.

  • Since he is playing a Warwick Jonas Hellborg Signature bass - designed to get exactly the sound Jonas wanted - it ain't ugly at all! It is big - as is the case with many archtop-style guitars and basses: the size adds to the resonance and rich tonal qualities (particularly in the lower and midrange frequencies). Given all that, I would call it a beautiful piece of the luthier's art!

  • Actually the bass is not big at all. You should see/ try it once at a fair or in a shop, it's even smaller and finer than other acoustics, and there are some versions of the model which look really exquisite in decoration and color.

  • jonas rambles pretty hard, i dig it.

  • i way more enjoy listening to jonas than jaco pastorious thats for sure

  • Please, go back to listening to Radiohead. This performance is fantastic.

  • his performance is definitely fantastic.

but don't dig on Radiohead! they're a really, really great band.

  • I'm not, I like Radiohead. But there's Radiohead, and then there's this. This is on a whole new level IMO.

  • It's really too bad that not all bassists do shitty covers of the Mario theme, isn't it?

  • woops, the thing I started out with XD. But I guess it's a easy first song, but I agree there's almost too many covers of them on youtube

  • The whole video is great but from the 5:00 0n is KICK ASS BASS PLAYING!

  • that bend at 1:32. Man that was killer!!!!!! best part of the video.

  • besides, i cant believe people actually relate 'lesser knobs' to the gear being 'low tech'

  • yeah all you really need is a volume knob, a tone knob and if you want a boost knob. Thats all i have on mine.

  • both the bass and the amp is easily one of the most technologically advanced gear der is today. the bass' pickups are full range MEC pickups which pick up sounds dat are as low as 20hz. and the bass only has a volume knob and no onboard eq because an eq wud jus change the tone of da bass itself. the amp too was designed by the man himself. right from how it luks all the way down to the smallest capacitor. well, yeah, it is considred to be DA mst advanced bass amp ever made. n shit expnsive too.

  • his bass is really great you can really hear the wood to bad its really expensive.

  • this is great!

is it improvised or did he compose this?

  • The part from around 7.20 is from his acoustic bass solo album "The Silent Life" and the song is called You have to die to live

  • I actually got to try his bass at a clinic with Art Metal Trio. It´s not as "clumpsy" as it may look. Way too expensive but a good bass. He´s a great guy and he´s got some skills.

  • This dude is awesome!

  • man! great!

  • I wonder if he can play my dog has fleas

  • his tone is orgasmic

  • i could watch this all day, so good.

  • That acoustic bass sounds sick

  • It's not realy acoustic. It has no cutaways, but the body IS hollow.

  • Comment removed

  • I see 2 cutaways...

  • Oh, sorry... I mean the holes... you know, f-holes, sound holes.

Because acoustic basses use pickups or microphones inside the body, but this bass has no sound holes and the only pickup there is is one near the bridge. That was my point.

  • I get ya :)

  • yeah its a custom made Jonas Hellborg Hollow body by Warwick. He's also playing through Warwick 'Hellborg' amps and cabs he helped design.

  • He´s really taken away all of the "hi-tech" stuff from both the bass and amp. The bass has just one knob for example. He´s got a unique tone and sound...just a matter of personal taste if you like it or not I guess. :)

  • It also goes to show that tone is mostly in your hands.

  • Amen to that.

  • This is amazing.

  • aww man....he is sexing up that bass hardcore

  • This is the best ive heard him play

  • ...and this is when I fall in love with Hellborg

  • his bass tone is so..unique

  • At certain points, his bass sounds so acoustic. Incredible.

  • for sure but another important thing is his new AMP odr cabinet Series, it sound like PA

  • that bend at like 1:32 was so perfectly placed and executed, on that alone u can tell how amazing he is lol and god damn do i love warwicks

  • Wow that's a cool bass! Hellborg is such a great player, I love the stuff of him with Shawn Lane.

  • The album I was thinking of specifically is "Abstract Logic" great jam album one of my favs. It's like Primus on LSD, which I thought they already were. How much LSD would that make Abstract Logic?

  • Jonas Hellborg ??What can i say??Great no,MAJESTIC BASS PLAYER.BRAVOOOO

  • Typical. Pete Townsend, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clampton, Pat Metheny etc etc who are all obviously considered major world class guitar players, but just because this man plays the bass, nobody knows who he is.. Probably the best bass player I have ever heard...

  • @Johnnynoknees It's not like he has his own signature top of the line series of amplifiers and preamps or anything...

  • @Johnnynoknees

I would love to see Jonas and Seth Horan work on a piece together.

  • God I wish I could get close to that tone.

  • DAM thats a sexual tone!

  • most definitely! :D

  • That tune he plays towards the end is called "You Have To Die To Live" from "The Silent Life" album, I love it very much.

    His music is soul purifying.

  • awesome sound

  • Love Jonas playing! He would fit very nice in a psychedelia band!

  • I love his bass...

  • Jonas said he have Problems with his back.

He said the Acousticbass is not so heavy.

  • god...jonas you are amazing!!!

  • I love how big his bass is, Jonas is a pro handling a beast.

  • makes sense

  • wikked!!!

his bass is to big for me

    why this size?

  • I believe the bass is a hollowbody, so the extra size will give it a bigger sound.

  • solid boady basses gave Jonas back problems. From the weight as well as the position. This bass he finds better for his back & the pickup is a full range,up to 20k I think.

  • Nobody sounds like this guy. Truly an original sound and playing style.

  • this guy has beastly skills at bass!

  • superb what Janos and Marcus have in comman is they play real music they dont come up with a new track just to fit around a new technique they have just come up with like some Victor(god I am gonna get into trouble for that lol). But its true these players write whats best for the song not the technique. You can out there music on when you want to listen to good music. When I wanna listen to bass p;laying I will put on a bit of Victor or Stu.

  • amen to that

  • Question for people who know more about him than I... Is this him just playing on the spot or is this a song of his? The fact that it has recognizable parts leads me to think it's a song of his. Anyone help out here?

  • He's improvising according to how he feels at the time. Sometimes that leads to themes he's played before, but even those are flavoured with the inventivity and originality of the moment.

  • That was an answer to Wyndojo's question if Jonas is playing free or certain songs he's learned before

  • incredible!

  • I love Hellborg's sound. It's so deep, yet so clear and well articulated. When he slaps, the sound is so snappy, yet it's still very full. I wouldn't use his tone though. I prefer a brighter, 'midsier' sound. It kinda makes me wonder: the solid maple body and maple neck w/ebony fingerboard should be VERY bright. Ditch those Hellborg strings (which are too foundation-oriented for my tastes) and you'd probably have a super-bright tone, something like I would use.

  • Amen to that description. Super deep and dark yet completely well articulated. A little jealousy flushes over me ha

  • Wicked post. Great sensitivity in his playing here. Jonas has been saving fusion for twenty years man, buy his albums (the new one "Art Metal" just came out). I pray he comes to Vancouver one day, damn Europeans don't care about us out here!!

  • he's amazing, i love warwicks, and his sounds insane!

  • I totally agree that Hellborg is underrated, I wasn't sure if I liked hime at first but when I actually listened to some of the stuff that he's doing it just never fails to impress. Look at his right hand technique for example, so many little sublties there that just come together to create lines that you hear and love but don't quite know why you love it!

His bass is a bit funny looking but I suppose I can forgive him for that cos it is his sig model after all so it obviously works for him!

  • taht is a warwick hellborge signature bass.sweet is'nt it

  • he's amazing. so under-appreciated too

  • I saw jonas back in 85 at the Bass Centre in London, he played "Its the Pits" - i didn't know whether to practice 4 hours a day or to just throw my bass away... he is a awesome and under appreciated musician.

  • What warwick bass is that?

  • His signature WW
