The bass sounds interesting.. but I think ergonomics were out of the question.. His right arm resting on the edge of that fat body for a whole show.. really poor design from a great bass builder. And having the bass so far away from you due to the bass thickness must be awful.
Jonas does some interesting stuff in this video, but I guess he is not my kind of bass player because he never caught my ears (not to mention I find his slap playing horribly un-musical).
I don't get how his signature model bass which costs thousands of dollars can be set up so badly to have fret buzz on almost every note, maybe it's just me but it drives me nuts.
@Olliemetal666 "it's a sympathetic kind of rattle" Love that Ollie. That's what 1 of my bass's suffers from. I thought of it as fret buzz. But now it will always be "sympathetic rattle" Thank you. }:0)
@usedinpublic It's because of his strong hand technique. If he wanted to, every single note on that fret board could come out crystal clear. Tone is in the hands, and chances are his action is set like that to give his playing more character. Dynamics son.
I saw him in a double concert in Mexico City: Metal Art Trio + Béla Fleck & The Flectones, and in one song Victor Wooten and Hellborg actually played together, it was amazing
@plight420 I saw him with Mclaughlin in 80s He was a skinny little shit with long hair in a pony tail I had only barely heard of him at the time
He totally blew me and everyone else away. Got to meet them backstage and had a few Heineken's He was pissed off because someone ate his onion rings You would have thought he was Schwarzenegger the way he was ranting on saying he would kick the MF's ass who took his onion rings! We were all trying not to laugh, because he didn't think it was very funny
@BombsonBicycles The majority of it is probably improvised (though I can't be too sure), but played during the last few minutes is "You Have To Die To Live" from his album, The Silent Life.
This video includes several references to Jonas' impressive solo CD, the silent life. If you guys enjoyes this, you should check out that great album.
@raggedy Actually the height of your bass either puts stress on your fretting hand or plucking/picking hand. If you wear it higher up your fretting hand is relieved of stress and allows you to fret faster; alternatively there is quite a bit of stress on your fingering hand, which slows down your plucking. The lower you wear your instrument more stress is added to your fingering hand and your plucking/picking hand loses some stress.
well this is the first time ive ever heard this guy. i like him more than victor wooten (im actually not too into victor) i like him more than stanley clark (love clark) i like his as much as micheal manring (probably my favorite) the only person i like more is jaco. this guy is automatically catapulted to the top of my favorites list
Since he is playing a Warwick Jonas Hellborg Signature bass - designed to get exactly the sound Jonas wanted - it ain't ugly at all! It is big - as is the case with many archtop-style guitars and basses: the size adds to the resonance and rich tonal qualities (particularly in the lower and midrange frequencies). Given all that, I would call it a beautiful piece of the luthier's art!
Actually the bass is not big at all. You should see/ try it once at a fair or in a shop, it's even smaller and finer than other acoustics, and there are some versions of the model which look really exquisite in decoration and color.
both the bass and the amp is easily one of the most technologically advanced gear der is today. the bass' pickups are full range MEC pickups which pick up sounds dat are as low as 20hz. and the bass only has a volume knob and no onboard eq because an eq wud jus change the tone of da bass itself. the amp too was designed by the man himself. right from how it luks all the way down to the smallest capacitor. well, yeah, it is considred to be DA mst advanced bass amp ever made. n shit expnsive too.
I actually got to try his bass at a clinic with Art Metal Trio. It´s not as "clumpsy" as it may look. Way too expensive but a good bass. He´s a great guy and he´s got some skills.
Oh, sorry... I mean the holes... you know, f-holes, sound holes.
Because acoustic basses use pickups or microphones inside the body, but this bass has no sound holes and the only pickup there is is one near the bridge. That was my point.
He´s really taken away all of the "hi-tech" stuff from both the bass and amp. The bass has just one knob for example. He´s got a unique tone and sound...just a matter of personal taste if you like it or not I guess. :)
The album I was thinking of specifically is "Abstract Logic" great jam album one of my favs. It's like Primus on LSD, which I thought they already were. How much LSD would that make Abstract Logic?
Typical. Pete Townsend, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clampton, Pat Metheny etc etc who are all obviously considered major world class guitar players, but just because this man plays the bass, nobody knows who he is.. Probably the best bass player I have ever heard...
solid boady basses gave Jonas back problems. From the weight as well as the position. This bass he finds better for his back & the pickup is a full range,up to 20k I think.
superb what Janos and Marcus have in comman is they play real music they dont come up with a new track just to fit around a new technique they have just come up with like some Victor(god I am gonna get into trouble for that lol). But its true these players write whats best for the song not the technique. You can out there music on when you want to listen to good music. When I wanna listen to bass p;laying I will put on a bit of Victor or Stu.
Question for people who know more about him than I... Is this him just playing on the spot or is this a song of his? The fact that it has recognizable parts leads me to think it's a song of his. Anyone help out here?
He's improvising according to how he feels at the time. Sometimes that leads to themes he's played before, but even those are flavoured with the inventivity and originality of the moment.
I love Hellborg's sound. It's so deep, yet so clear and well articulated. When he slaps, the sound is so snappy, yet it's still very full. I wouldn't use his tone though. I prefer a brighter, 'midsier' sound. It kinda makes me wonder: the solid maple body and maple neck w/ebony fingerboard should be VERY bright. Ditch those Hellborg strings (which are too foundation-oriented for my tastes) and you'd probably have a super-bright tone, something like I would use.
Wicked post. Great sensitivity in his playing here. Jonas has been saving fusion for twenty years man, buy his albums (the new one "Art Metal" just came out). I pray he comes to Vancouver one day, damn Europeans don't care about us out here!!
I totally agree that Hellborg is underrated, I wasn't sure if I liked hime at first but when I actually listened to some of the stuff that he's doing it just never fails to impress. Look at his right hand technique for example, so many little sublties there that just come together to create lines that you hear and love but don't quite know why you love it!
His bass is a bit funny looking but I suppose I can forgive him for that cos it is his sig model after all so it obviously works for him!
I saw jonas back in 85 at the Bass Centre in London, he played "Its the Pits" - i didn't know whether to practice 4 hours a day or to just throw my bass away... he is a awesome and under appreciated musician.
