The whining on this mk2 is the straight cut gear box, they didnt have straight cut standard thoguh, this one is rally prepped.

well, a helical gear set engages progressively where as straight cut are direct engagement teeth. A helical gear set means the teeth are at for example, 45 degree angel to the cog, where as straight cut are 90 degree to the cog, or perpendicular. When you reverse the car will almost certainly whine because its reverse gear is straight cut. Same gear ratio as first, but first will be forwards motion and therefore helical cut gears. I wont go into syncro or anything, dont wanna get too into detail

what i should of said is, when you reverse a car, you can hear the same whine. Thats cos even normal cars use straight cut for reverse, so imagining that reversing whine all the time in all the gears
