  • keith richards is the human greeting card

  • what is the song at 7:32?

  • Are you batshit retarded? Beefheart couldn't play cowbell for Zappa ffs. Beffheart WASN'T light years ahead of his time with utterly genius theory and composition. Beefheart WASN'T a masterfully skilled instrument player either. It's like comparing Mozart to the hobo who plays at the corner for wine money.

  • u are really that stupid arnt u Zappa and Beefheart grew up together since there teenage years they even toured to gether they were best friends Captain Beef. is one of the best but u cant say what u said about zappa.

  • itillbeme... Learn how to SPELL.... The word is SYCOPHANT

  • I will think about it as much as you obviously did: i.e., not at all.

  • "Put him in a small, uncomfortable car " ! LOL

  • i cant get the music of him...im trying to appreciate it but its like irritating to my ear..what is music though? music from the pit? oh my its sound like very abnormal...

  • subtitles?

  • PeelTower - your statement is equivalent to saying Einstein had cool hair but didn't know shit about physics. You'd be surprised how many of your musical hero's have masturbated to his music. But judging by your statements, I don't think you've gotten beyond rock a bye baby.

  • Well then I guess Ruth Underwood, Ian Underwood, George Duke, Vinnie Colaiuta, Chad Wackerman, Tommy Mars, Terry Bozzio, Steve Vai, Tom Fowler, Walt Fowler, Bruce Fowler, Don Preston, Michael Wolfe, and about 1000 others who are considered the best musicians in world are wankers too. I never loved his guitar playing but most of his compositions are timeless and amazing. Check out Live at the Roxy, One size fits all, and Overnight sensation for starters (1970's).

Trust me, you're not getting it.

  • PeelTower!

I'm happy to hear another voice speak out about Frank's music. I'm a huge Zappa fan but in Zappa's case the whole world could try to convince me with your opinion. I just would be glad to hear. You just can't move either me or Frank Zappa.

  • cadillac!

  • HAHAHAHA, Look at Chad Wackerman's mullet at 3.39.

  • He still looks about 12. It's freakish.

  • Wackerman, that is.

  • I was brought up on this stuff. He inspired me to start playing music.

  • Frank was wrong about one thing...He DID change our lives (mine, for sure) thru his music. I have a Frank Zappa tribute wall in my studio. All things Zappa! I hope my 19 year-old son will appreciate what Frank has achieved with his legacy of music (rock, comedy, social commentary, truth, jazz, orchestral & blending music styles), film & absolutely amazing showmanship. Hats off to Dweezil for playing Frank's impossible notes on guitar! (Cheers to ZPZ band old & new Zappa alumni) Music is the best

  • Seeing Brian May on this just made me love him even more. He's a total class act and amazing guitarist/composer.

  • that's funny. i was just going to write a comment saying "Brian May is a tosser."

  • Are you that lonely that you need to share random negative opinions just for attention? Kinda stupid as Brian May is a very respected guitarist and you will probably get laid twice in your life by fat girls. Who are you to say shit about anything?

  • brian may is a twat. the whole thing he did with the national anthem says it all.

p.s. that comment about fat girls was really random.

  • What about the national anthem? Who cares? Whatever he did, it's just a song that celebrates what is now a mediocre country. One man's democracy is another man's candy-coated dictatorship.

  • Brian has come up with some good licks, as well as being a tosser.

  • You're such a loser it's obvious. What a lame agenda...I bet you don't have any friends. I feel sorry for you and whatever else you decide to reply with only proves my point.

  • Well thats me telt. I'm sure Brian May would be thankful for your support, even if he is a tosser.

  • I case you know, Brian May was one of Frank's favorite guitarists.

  • Actually I've heard Brian on Frank, but I've never heard Frank on Brian. Please send me the link. Apart from anything, how can you listen to Frank Zappa and yet so clearly have missed the humour boat?

  • I think that brian just know is music is crap.

He accepts it and get the money from the stupid people

  • The Monty Python of Rock. The great Frank Zappa no doubt a genuis.....

  • I like the appearence of John Smothers...king of the plookers.

  • haha. Love frank's improptu narration of the Cadillac test!

  • good point...=)

  • how come whenever people are talking about great musicians like zappa and hendrix they always give props to that piece of dung waits...lol

  • Probably because Waits is in the same class as these composers and performers.

  • To me FZ was,is and will forever be the greatest musician.I am 35 years old,and listen to his music since i was about 6 years old.I knew by instinct that i was into a special thing. There is not a single day going by without a Zappa record running in my home, and i can´t name a favorite, there are far too many to pick one out.Even my daughters(3 and four) like his music.that is crazy, isn´t it?

  • Highly addictive, & only he could do it right

  • There is not a situation that I have been a party to in this life, from the ludicrous to the tragic, that has not spurned a recollection of a Zappa lyric. Thank you for giving your daughters this vast library to draw from as well :).

  • my daughters like just another band from la,ruben and the jets and francesco the best.they also like beefheart, debussy and the residents.i showed them how to handle records, and the rest is up to them.teach your children well...

  • Your girls are going to be some of the very few in the coming generation who know what an LP is, I know 20 year olds who don't remember them. It's sad really, they only know these digitally cleaned up and enhanced versions of the classic songs, no flubs, no breathing, no little nuance of a plug being pulled to change the tone of an organ.

  • i know what you mean.well,i am kind of old-fashioned about some things.but then i can only show them what is out there, and ask them to make up their minds by themselves, after that i have to let them go.

  • Not my potential kids. They're going to be on a strict diet of what I like and I have every intention of living vicariously through them lol.

  • they listen to beefheart and the residents? what a trip. when are you going to buy them guitars and basses?

  • 5:13 = Greatest guitarist of all time.

  • this would be great if i could tell what they are saying..

  • "I like the guy he's a great musician"

    aha

  • Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix are the greatest musicians ever, the real geniuses.

  • don't forget Tom Waits

  • that man was my number one guiter player of all time and the worlds a different place without him RIP Frank your tunes will live on forever

  • free choice buddy we all got opinions thats the great thing about being human

jumbo leave me alone get your head of my bone

    i want to go home

jumbo likes it up the bum

  • Who would you put in your top 10 then?

You may not like his guitar playing, but you must be able to aknowledge the fact that he could probably be the best composer ever, and most revolutionary composer too, but the latter to a lesser extent than the first.

  • Wasn't expecting anything that I hadn't seen before but was hooked for the whole 50 mins. Great documentary and well recommended.

Zappa used to be the solution. Now he's the reason.

  • he passed it on long live frank

  • germany dummass

  • agreed

  • Seems like you are a real real idi**... well, it's austrian.

  • lol

  • every country that narrates movies is a idiotic one. dont be ignorant learn different languages.

  • You're talking about dubbing, I think. This is a German movie, and it is perfectly understandable that it is told in German. They aren't dubbing the interviews either, just texting them.

Well, I hope your comment isn't a respone to anything (god FORBID youtube ever show that) because my comment might be stupid that way.

  • well, english is easy to understand because it's a primitive language made for pretty stupid folks. russian or chinese is pretty hard to understand. i have no problem with the german version. i'm not ignorant and german is quite easy. what's your problem with this one?

  • English simple? This multi-continental pidgin of Old English/Latin/French/German? The best, weirdest living language, in my opinion.

I can't believe people are whining about a FREE documentary!

  • there selling burgers out the back

    green chevy

  • Lol, the entire Cadillac scene is brilliant.

  • Cool, thanx for sharing...

  • All the stuff on the radio is really top knotch. I think you'd have to have a brain tumor to not to be able to produce a good reality documentation.

  • nice! i was at the ZPZ concert in the "melkweg" 27th of septembre this year! was so awesome, i recommend it to everyone who likes Zappa

  • What he's playing while sitting on the chair under the blue light--is such a thing of beauty, timeless, transcendant, good god.

Sadly, gems like this are often overlooked by his detractors because all they can see are the scatalogical lyrics, the funny noises, the sophmoric humor, the big nose.

I mean if they can't see the beauty he created, their minds undoubtedly filter the world in such a way as to only allow through the ugly and cynical...

  • Do you know what song that is? I totally agree with you by the way.

  • It might be an improvised outro to "Zoot Allures."

The chords and the whammy bar stuff point in that direction.

  • It is "St. Etienne" It´s on the album Jazz from Hell if U like it U should allso get the album

Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar, Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar some more. And Return of the son of Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar. There is a song called Pink Napkins that are very similar to St. Etienne. I can also recomend Joe´s Garage with some of the best lyrics ever written. Other Fav´s are "You are what U is" & "Overnite sensation"

14 days left to the Zappa concert in Stockholm :)

  • I'm utterly tired of being accused of blindness by people who persist in praising every single thing that a good artist does. It's not a case of filtering, it's a case of preferring the things that Zappa did best. We like him for his originality. Those sentimental solos is probably some of the least transcendent things Zappa ever did.

  • Blah blah blah. Sounds like some prepackaged chortle designed to make yourself look informed about the subject.

Go write a book on scatology.

  • Blah blah blah. Sounds like the lame response of a sentimental fan-boy who is anything but informed. As for prepackaged: your first blurt about transcendence and beauty still got the price label on it.

    Go acquire some perspective.

  • Whatever. I happen to like many of his guitar solos because his improvisatory predilections often led him to come up with beautiful melodies on the spot. I have no explanation for why my brain is wired to just like 'em, and I don't really have a need to "intellectualize" it. Why you have this compulsion to piss on what others get out of music is just some hang-up you may want to psycho-anal-yze someday.

  • Minero, sure. If you like it, you like it: no problem. But when you start to go on about how people who don't appreciate it have a mental block and start using "transcendent" as just another superlative to throw on anything that catches your fancy, then you better have some arguments to support those claims or you're asking for it. If you don't want to intellectualize, then don't attempt it.

  • An argument that I can fit into a YouTube comment? In 1000 years I'll bet there will be at least a few hundred thousand lavosdamen (see comment below) who "really like what it sounds like" to transcend the pretense of all present and future teenage YouTube "Comments & Responses" critics with too much bedroom time on their hands.

And "we like Zappa for his originality" is not only presumptuous, it's...well, lame (to use your phrase).

  • Amazing, you come up with all the bull and when somebody points this out suddenly their the ones that are presumptuous and has too much bedroom time.

Come now, even someone sold out on solos can't honestly believe that it was Zappas solos that was his most original contribution to music. No, his greatest contribution lies in his compositions, conceptual continuity and his defense of the freedom of expression. His originality is far closer to being transcendent then any particular solo:

  • No matter if you prefer classical, rock, pop, electronic or some other form of music... if you have any knowledge of musical history you will be able to spot that Zappa had a very distinct and unique style. His originality has a degree of transcendence. If you find his electric-guitar solos beautiful or not depends entirely on your particular taste when it comes to electric-guitar solos.

  • Fair enough. But I see his soloing as part of his composing process, and in light of the fact that he recorded almost everything he ever did, some of his compositions were built around the more successful concert improvisations. E.g., if you listen to the entire "Black Napkins" solo from Osaka, about 50% of it sucks, but it was cleverly edited together resulting in what appears on "Zoot Allures."

  • I mean, I guess we agree on the originality of his work, and whereas a lot of people think he was a shitty guitar player because he didn't play precisely-picked scales that were the fashion in a given month, I always thought their originality revolved around the fact that they resembled speech patterns more than Dimeola-style virtuosity. Thus, to me his soloing is inextricably connected with his originality.

  • While I think you might be a little quick to attach the fan-boy label, looking back at my OP I have to admit that it really *is* a bit gushing, so yeah you're right--BLECCCHH! You probably ruffled my feathers at the time hence the uncalled-for ad homs (extends turkey claw)--sorry 'bout that.

  • Right, hatchet buried. I asked for a motivation and you've supplied one that makes sense. I know the fan-boy thing was a bit hasty, blame it on the heat of the moment I guess. Besides, I was bitching about a trend on youtube (or anywhere that music is discussed for that matter), not trying to label you personally. Nice to see that not all arguments erupts into endless flames.

  • The song is called You are what you is. And is from the album (1981) whit same titel, go buy it :-), one of my favorite albums with F Z

  • I got something, Frank. You made my life a lot better for having experienced your music and thoughts. RIP

  • "St. Etienne" from Jazz From Hell

  • ''Don't expect anything, then if you get something it's a bonus...'' or did he say 'BOGUS'? Ach zu spaet - tot....

  • Gods I miss Zappa!

  • Ilike his sentences! Very trully!

  • true, true!!!!!!

  • A surreal musical god!

  • I once saw footage from 1963 of Zappa playing a bike on the Steve Allen show - Zappa DID NOT have a mustache, and without it, he actually resembled Bob Saget!!!

  • NO WAY!

  • I like Zappa,s music but that doesnt mean that i have to agree with some of the sound-bites he throws -up.

"Expect everyone to be an Asshole, then you wont be disappointed"...Sounds like something any clever person could say(in high-school)...the fact is that you get what you concentrate on.If you only want to meet Assholes in your life then think like Frank Zappa..

  • hey arschlock, weiss du was ein arschlock ist?, das ist was du bist, mit kopf aus scheiss und alles can you read german, putz.. or should we make it plainer... you're a no brainer

  • 20 punkte nach österreich!DoRo machen wirklich die besten rock-dokus!

  • Great! Like Richards said: He passed it on!

You are what you is, and Zappa was (still is to me) the best!!

  • Looks like Borat. Why is he so popular in Germany?

  • Thanx,

Zappa will always be the best.

  • I hope ARTE will diffuse it again

  • I thought it was spelled "douche"... "All people are assholes until proven different". Yeah, thats been my experience. *waits to be attacked for the "douche" comment*

  • haha "Rock n' roll filmmaking"...

  • Wunderbar !

  • yeh that's true - Queen were utterly awful, and those homages where from thickos.

  • There's no english version? :/ I used to learn deutch but remember nothing :P

  • obviously...it's spelled 'deutsch', not 'deutch' ;)

  • Pfr :P

  • the almighty smartass struck again! muahahaa! ;)

  • I can't understand what the german voice says!

  • A true simpleton he was. Zappa yanked out the bits deep in our recesses and laid it bare on the table. He worked backwards taking the complicated through birth pangs. Apparently, he still is. Folks, read before you hear him. The wordsmith he was outshone his contemporaries, save for Ian Anderson, but Tull's another story.

  • congratulations, you have been inducted into the CUFMY (Club of Utter Fucking Morons on Youtube). You may prepare a speech and thank anybody you wish to but pleasr keep the list short.

  • Thank you, thank you. I'd like to thank all the German people, and the folks in Belgium too.

  • remember when he used to freak us out

  • What is that intro with Zappa doing these crazy poses?

  • those were all signals to his first band the Mothers to alldo certain crazy things like all play the highest or lowest note they could play or scream in a certain way !!

  • FRANK IS GOD OF MUSIC

  • Frank is the last true composer of the 20th century

  • his slow melodic solos are something of a vai or satriani status

  • he was a genius really

  • This man is unique.

  • omg

I'm totally in love with Frank Zappa.

    It's his wicked intellect...and...that nose.

  • thx for posting this. it's great

"I think that life itself is so absurd, because the human species was a mistake, I'm convinced of it. That if there is a god, he really fucked up when he made people"

    Right on, Frank
