Metal is in the heart! I used to have really long hair, but had to cut it for a job. Metal isn't about clothes, hair, or the like. Its a love of a certain style of music. The brutal nature of the music generally aligns with a certain life philosophy such as independent, not following the crowd.
The only strange metal head is one that doesn't actually like metal. As a black metal head, I'd rather throw all my albums in the trash than grow out an afro or dreads. Shit's hard as hell to take care of.

The metal "Family" (I say family because I think it applies better than the term "Scene") has always been known for it's tolerance and that we all come from different walks of life. United by one thing that we all love. I have short hair because I want to have short hair. It doesn't change who I am or what I like. I've been a MASSIVE Slayer fan for years.
I listen to bands like Coprocephliac, and Visceral Disgorde, yet I have short hair. Not on my own choice, my parents make me because guys= short hair and girls =long hair. And I do agree to a certain extent, while I don't have a bias on either, I do prefer me having short hair. I've had long hair before, and compared to short, it's so much work. It feels good to roll out of bed with your hair looking perfect :)

Music has nothing to do with running around with spikes, fake blood or anything like that. Sound is for the ears, and individual taste. A man in a suit, could as well be as big a metalhead as anyone around him.

I'm a die hard metalhead, but it would take me FOREVER to grow my hair out long. My hair is naturally curly (not really curly, but enough to stay short looking)
The only way for me to have long hair is to straighten it, and even then it's still only jaw length.

i dont think the pictures prove anything because the stereotype of a metal head is EITHER long hair, or a shaved head. Most metal heads under 16 or 17 however will have an inbetween length, some willl even have a large 'emo' fringe even if the are not from the scene whatsoever

I am a "short hair". I do get a little envious of my long haired brothers but I dont have the patients to grow my hair out. Though I do have a pretty good sized beard. Hair doesnt make you metal.
I don't like to single out groups, but I'm going to. Out of the few comments about short hair that I still hear in my local scene(yes, this lame idea still exists haha), 98% of the time it's from "thrash till the death" kids.Now, I have nothing against thrash, but some of these little wankers need to learn about: A-right of choice and B-genetics. Not everyone has the ability to grow long hair and not every metal head wants to, but that doesn't mean they aren't just as serious about the music.
I cut my hair after having it long for 6 or 7 years, give or take, just for the hell of it ...... and I got soooooo much shit from my friends just because i didn't look "metal" enough. I'm growing it back out though, because headbanging just doesn't feel the same. other than that, it didn't change or diminish how "metal" i am.
I have short hair and listen to metal. Anything from Eluveitie, to Iced Earth, Black Sabbath, to Behemoth... I don't see how long hair is a necessity.

Opeth is indeed a great band, Iron Maiden also. Black Sabbath, Pantera and like you also Motörhead. Then we also have some other styles of metal: System of a Down, Avenged Sevenfold, BFMV, Disturbed, Black Label Society, KoRn, LP, Machine Head, Limp Biskit, RATM, Trivium, Mastodon, Mötley Crue, POD(not sure if Metal), Slipknot, Stone Sour, Volbeat, Alter Bridge. And there's some pre-metal like Hendrix and LZ.

I have met people that call themselves metal heads and dress the part, but when engaging in a conversation about music they are pretty narrowminded and dont actuallly know many metal bands apart from the very well known or mainstream stuff. I dont really like to call myself a metal head or be associated with people like that. I like extreme heavy metal as well as other types of music. You like what you like and thats that, am not fitting into any pigeon hole just to be 'accepted'.
I cant believe that this is an issue that concerns some people. If being a 'metal head' means being an individual and doing your own thing, then hair length or clothing is not an issue. You could argue that seeing alot of metal fans all dress the same that we are not individual at all, but part of another trend. So maybe the bald or short haired metal fans are the real 'metal heads', not trying to fit into norms. Its your attitude and way of thinking that counts, not appearance.
Yeah, to cut a long story short thats exactly what I meant. My part about attitude and way of thinking never came out correctly. If you like any kind of music, you like it, simple. You dont have to let it define how you dress. This is evident when you see photos of some of what are regarded as the more extreme musicians within the genre.

There have been alot of fans and mucisians who have had short hair such as Rob Halford Phil Anselmo Howard Jones Randy Blythe Kirk Windstien Bruce Dickinson G5 from Anvil Rocky George...I could go on but my point is those are some of the most respected Icons in metal so just remember its about the music not the hair.

There is still some difference to bald and short hair. But nonetheless i think short hair isn't a problem, but i would never grow short hair myself. But each to its personal taste though!

I cut my hair after having it long for 6 or 7 years, give or take, just for the hell of it ...... and I got soooooo much shit from my friends just because i didn't look "metal" enough. I'm growing it back out though, because headbanging just doesn't feel the same. other than that, it didn't change or diminish how "metal" i am.

Opeth is indeed a great band, Iron Maiden also. Black Sabbath, Pantera and like you also Motörhead. Then we also have some other styles of metal: System of a Down, Avenged Sevenfold, BFMV, Disturbed, Black Label Society, KoRn, LP, Machine Head, Limp Biskit, RATM, Trivium, Mastodon, Mötley Crue, POD(not sure if Metal), Slipknot, Stone Sour, Volbeat, Alter Bridge. And there's some pre-metal like Hendrix and LZ.

I have met people that call themselves metal heads and dress the part, but when engaging in a conversation about music they are pretty narrowminded and dont actuallly know many metal bands apart from the very well known or mainstream stuff. I dont really like to call myself a metal head or be associated with people like that. I like extreme heavy metal as well as other types of music. You like what you like and thats that, am not fitting into any pigeon hole just to be 'accepted'.

I cant believe that this is an issue that concerns some people. If being a 'metal head' means being an individual and doing your own thing, then hair length or clothing is not an issue. You could argue that seeing alot of metal fans all dress the same that we are not individual at all, but part of another trend. So maybe the bald or short haired metal fans are the real 'metal heads', not trying to fit into norms. Its your attitude and way of thinking that counts, not appearance.

Yeah, to cut a long story short thats exactly what I meant. My part about attitude and way of thinking never came out correctly. If you like any kind of music, you like it, simple. You dont have to let it define how you dress. This is evident when you see photos of some of what are regarded as the more extreme musicians within the genre.

Either way I dont care as long as people dont ostracize those that dont. At the end of the day its really not that important to me. I know plenty of kids with long hair who only really listen to Disturbed or Slipknot. Nothing wrong with that, but I am just saying music taste has nothing to do with how you dress or grow out your hair. I do have a beard though, but it was -50f here this weekend hahaha.
