Receiver: u get a route, u can run it or run w.e u want. To get the ball more often call for it by pressing A.

RB: Just run the ball and run w.e route on a throwing play if you would like.

I disagree when you say that you shouldn't pick a WR to throw to at the LOS...

If the D is showing blitz then you need to look to your RB, TE or Slot WR first because typically the man coverage used in a blitz will be covering your two biggest threats, or if you see two safeties deep that could be in cover 2 you should always look to your WR that is running a post, and if one isn't then you need to call a hot route because he will ALWAYS be open in a cover 2...

Of course, if you can tell what the D will be doing, strategizing before you snap the ball is recomended, but even in those situations i dont like to deticate myself to 1 player, on the odd chance he does not happen to be open whatsoever.

Of course when the ball is snapped you must make a quick read on the safeties and linebackers to see what coverage they are dropping into or where a blitz is coming from so you can either exploit a hole in the coverage or dump off the ball quickly to avoid a sack...

Working through your progressions is very important because in Madden WR's don't always catch the ball when they're below the two starters in the depth chart usually, and if you play as the Bears (as I usually do) the starters usually suck too...

So what I'm saying is don't lock in on one WR as I'm sure we all do sometimes by accident, but instead set a primary WR, and a safety net (TE, checkdown to RB) and look to them more than you would the other WR's on the field...

Remember, your primary WR does not always have to be the number 1 WR on the depth chart, just the one that is more likely to beat the coverage/come up with a completion. And finally if someone looks open, pass it to them, it could cause a TD if your lucky :D

the thing about this part of the game on ncaa, the create a player mode, the play calling is made to make it harder for you to do well, if you are a receiver or a QB they do lots of running plays even on a passing team
