I was on the decom crew USS Stonewall Jackson SSBN 634 and then spent four years on USS Columbus SSN 762. Good times, indeed. The movie Crimson Tide was entertaining but completely unrealistic. But nice video and thanks for uploading.
Although this is a nice tribute, Crimson Tide is a lame movie and presents a disrespectful look at the fine submarine service. There is good reason it was NOT endorsed or sponsored by the Navy. What's up with the "Mr. COB"? They did little accurate research and missed the mark. But then again if they had done any research they would have known that the whole premise of the movie was false and could never happen. - USN-SS-Ret.
Nice tribute. @thornton, the Crimson Tide movie is no compliment to submariners. The captain, so well portrayed by Gene Hackman, was an ego-maniacal jerk. No real submarine captain would have a stupid dog on board running around unattended to. Let alone allow the dog to hike its leg and take a leak on HIS boat! Just another BAD submarine movie. Plenty of them around.
I made 7 patrols on a polaris sub during the cold war of the 1960's and we had two cats on board....I know because they used my rack as a literbox. Also we and a few ego-maniac skippers. So unless you were a qualified submariner you wouldn't know a bad movie from a good one.
Don't forget 41forFreedom/688's and 637s. Fellas we had more in common with The Hunt for Red October than Crimson Tide.
BTW, Old Salts/Bubbleheads help me recall the distance between the top of the bridge to the waterline of a partially surfaced (TR hatch still dry) and fully surfaced (in port) SSBN Lafayette class.
I'm afraid I have to disagree with you! Crimson Tide WAS a good representation of the bubblehead community. There was "hollywood" added for the general public, but all in all it was accurate. AND yes I am a submariner from 76-82 USS Francis Scott Key SSBN657 Gold. We launched the first Trident Missles!

any hollywood movie can only give you an idea of being on a real sub. you have to be on one to fully understand it. hoooya (688i)

USA & UK SSN/SSN's are the best in the world. Not just in terms of technology but in terms of training and application.

Crimson Tide was a joke and an insult to subariners - very inaccurate portrayal. This youtube video, however, is cool :)
