Was this before or after the industry got in their heads? I'm guessing after. Such a sad lesson at the expense of such great talent. I'm just glad they were intelligent enough to not devolve into drugs and self destruction. Someone should make a film.
I smoke a fatty (cheapest teleport on the market available at your local dealer) , plug my computer to my overpriced flat screen tv, kaboom!! I'm there...while eating supper for the munchies...
Hey tantaluringen, so..... how's the teleport coming along? Gimme a buzz and I can "tele"comute with you. Imagine we can go back and catch GG, Genesis WITH Peter Gabriel, early YES, Floyd, we could also revise Cal Jam and STILL be back in time for supper. Iv'e got a bag full to the brim of Maui Wowie that we could share to remember all these great bands. Ah the 70's. There will NEVER be another era with music as good as this and I promise to tell you all about it.....when I remember
I always thought this band were incredible - they invented a music style that really shouldn't work but incredibly did! Random bits all over the place that somehow mesh perfectly! No one sounded like them - especially some of their medieval songs. Shame they split up
the world was a far better place when a genius band like this could exist AND people in cities around the world would fill concert halls to see them. how dumb the world has become, nobody left who might invent and play music like this, nobody smart enough left to understand it anyway...
It is even more dramatic. There are still people who might invent and play music like this, and there are people 'smart enough' left to understand it, but they can hardly meet for reason of short-sighted economy. I love Gentle Giant.
He wants to come with me to the next UK three friends gig. He plays piano very well and loves to play ravel and debussy and says he can hear gg in there. great music never dies.
i saw gg at least ten times from 73 to 78. best live band ever, except for zappa. yes, king crimson, elp, genesis, all un real live. but gg did multi instrumental stuff that was impossible to play, but they did.....
chicago was a great place for the progressive rock movement in the late seventys.....
I envy you for having been able to see them. I had a great time when Playing the Fool came out, trying to figure out who was switching from this instrument to that.
I also agree about the other bands you mention, especially Zappa. (I recommend seeing Zappa Plays Zappa if you get a chance. They concentrate on getting the music right up to Dweezil's high standards.)
Although I wasn't aware of them until decades later, I find the music of Hatfield and the North and National Health to fit in here.
GG were heroes, no less. This song starts in a tune very much similar to that of the song "Proclamation" from "the power and the glory" record, wouldn´t you all agree on that. But, and a big bot too, GG are not at all reminiscent of Yes, in my opinion. True, Yes were a great band, but their arrangements turn out in a whole different way, a more pompous one. In oddity you should instead try Van der Graaf Generator or King Crimson. Another good choice: Yezda Urfa - Sacred Baboon. A must-have.
Gentle Giant was unique as a group and I am so happy to see this clip. Thank you very much!!! I like the singers voice and see how the group lacks the styling of today. Gentle Giant was music and heart!! And talent and genial music!
Did you know that Derek Shulman became a bigshot i the record business after GG. He was A/R and CEO in major companies, and he signed a few good groups: Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Tears for Fears, Bad Company, Drean Theatre, Slipknot, Type O Negative to name just a few!
Without falling in sophistication the Giants succeed in adding that incredible slight unconceivable finition which makes me listening to them again and again and again since about 30 years of true musical pleasure. Love.
Do you know what I am thinking? The more I watch these videos and read the many comments from other countries, I realise an opportunity that GG missed. They would have won, hands down, The Eurovision Song Contest. They had the silly costumes, incompetent dancing, gauche movements and songs that our European neighbours love. I hear that we haven't won the competition for years, GG get back together and fol di rol, we have a winner. What do you think, great idea or what?
I do not care if You think I am crazy, because I probably am! If I can build a teleport (for time/area-travel) I will go there to enjoy every of those GG-concerts! Reality is killing me! :-(
I remember this. God, I feel so old!!!
