@mindrestep Perhaps but even that matter both man share one thing blood and slaugther as the rest ideologicaly they are the opositive but is interesiting how so many times "pogress" or "return to the old good tradition" is brough violently and savage still people will find in their hearts to defend this kind of people and call them leaders heroes and even saviors. Napoleon is probaly admired by most frenchman while in realtly he only brough misery and bloodshet
Nobility was a target only because they might be capable of taking action against Robespierre. Innocent French citizens, rich or poor, were bullied, mugged, brutalized by barbaric fascists laughingly calling themselves "revolutionaries". The real work of the people was the work that ended the terror. Essentially, the faux "National Assembly" blocked the people from both paricipating in and being heard in the Third Estates General. Robespierre and Napoleon had taken France over from the inside.
The French Revolution was like an Australian barbique . People get in for their chop and the meat on the barbique tasted better when it was Marie Antoinetted ....... Oui .

Robespierre, the shame of French history with Petain and some others is responsible for 500 000 people being jailed by 1793/1794, Synagogues, Churches being looted on a wide scale, and finally Guillotine beheading people on a daily basis during 6 hours without interruption in Paris I just miss words to qualify this dark bastard whatever were his intentions, ideals or philosophy - he is a just a murderer
I don't think that Eternal France lies in Religion, here Christianity. Petain was really admired by 1940 mainly due to his achievements by 1917. Regarded as the savior that could restore some pride after the collapse of 1940, a very little part of the French that supported him at that time thought that he would lead 'the national revolution' to that extent, I mean blaming on the greedy Jews for betraying the country and anihilating any form of contestation that did not match with his ideals.
@mindlestep Hmm Funny you compare the founder of Republican France and the Anti Republican Military strongman... Robespierre was brutal but he wasnt alone the very political struture that Petain fough against was what Robespierre brough I dont understand how you can compare such two man that are complete oposetives Democracy or whatver we call it now was brough with blood
Thanks for uploading this. i was listing to a Doctor Who story (actuly an audio of a episode once on the air) which was centered around this time period. so this little bit of info is helpful to me, to help set the stage.
"Stirred up for blood by the ravings of Jean Paul Marat". This is more editorializing than educational. Also, Marat lived in the home of a tradesman's family where he wanted to be available to the people and anyone could come to see him. That is how Charlotte Corday got close enough to assassinate him.

@mindlestep Why is Petain a shame? He was only trying to reestablish eternal France and consign the vile Republic to the dustbin of history.

@byjingoifido No, it was Robespierre who lived with a carpenter & his family.
