  • can someone tell me how to get these awesome effects?!

  • blackmill :>

  • I was definitely born in the wrong era. I'm at uni now and all we get is terrible rappers... would have loved to seen John live

  • Reminds me of looking out across the ocean on a moon lit night

  • @TrueBlueEG8 I entirely agree, that's exactly how I feel about the great man and his music. It now has 20 dislikes, a sure sign there's some fucked up people in this world. Ralph McTell said if you don't like this you have no soul...

  • 19 dislikes? This speaks volumes about today's world. This is not music, it is actually pure magic in the form of sound, and if you can't appreciate it, you should just give up on life entirely.

  • Is that guitar a Martin D 28? Anyone know?

  • I need to get out of this house

  • Heart and soul all over this from one the great muso's in my book and that of many others who were fortunate enough to be blessed by his incredible wealth of songs like this masterpiece.Still gets to me having heard it when it was first released over 30 years ago when I lived in England. A great loss, but his spirit lives on.

  • Eighteen DISLIKES ???? Get a fucking grip people.

  • it's so good, it brought tears to my eyes

  • John Martyn is one of the most gifted singer/songwriters that britain has ever produced. Pure raw emotion. Some people will never get it but the people that do should sit back and experience 8 minutes of sheer genius that is very hard to come by, especially from this day and ages standards. RIP John!

  • oh, i wish i could get this exact version on cd. I have a one world special with this on live, but, to me this is the most perfect version, of the most perfect track, of the most perfect artist that ever existed.. God (I don't believe in him in the conventional sense, though if ever there was a reason to, this is it) bless you John. XXX

  • Over a dozen dislikes for this gem of a performance??? ( It's a pity that you don't have to sign your name to your vote......then we could hunt ye all down. lol. )

  • What a genius can do with a guitar and a loop of recording tape. Played this the evening he died with the lights off and candles around the room. Still tears my heart out with the visions of the lake, mist and geese.

  • Get goose bumps whenever I hear this. The man was a genius, a troubled genius, but one none the less. This along with Solid Air will last the test of time.

So will all his music to be honest

  • John Martin and his orchestra!

  • what's his tuning on this,.. anyone know ?

  • @302199jerry CFCCGD as far as I know.

  • One of may favourite songs of all time.and such a beautiful perfomance.. this guy was blessed . If you like this then also check out Glenn Hughes "Coast to Coast" Soul Sessions... also right up there.

  • ma wee mammy passed away 1 month ago and i had to listen to this to ease my soul a wee bit, two of the most special people in my life now gone, if youve got a mother tell her you love her b4 its too late..rip x

  • @hashyhead Sorry for your loss lad. God rest her. Your soul will probably never ease but that's the price you pay for all the love you got. Damian

  • A truly, truly beautiful hymn to the night. I've heard literally millions of songs and own thousands of CDs but i don't know if i've ever heard anything as achingly beautiful as this.

    God bless you big man

  • when i listen the music of John Martyn i feel sad and happy together!

    Thank you John!!

  • Fucking miss you man, this is soul music.

  • My mum used to hang out with John, before I was born, when she was living in a student flat in Byres Road, Glasgow, in the late '60s.. I found her old records back in the '80s when I was in my early teens, and he was one of the people who inspired me to pick up a guitar and learn how to play it. I still come back here, in the Small Hours, for a little Scottish Soul-Music.. I wish I'd had the chance to jam with him before he passed on. Rest in peace, brother.

  • Beautiful.....miss you man!

  • Just discovered a recording of this concert on dvd that I'd forgotten I'd recorded (and forgot to label!)...must've been a good night :-P ..... Its made my day........ oh yes, good times! :))

  • The dislikes are from people that live in a closet full of pop music. And never come out.

Open your ears, open your soul, open your hearts. Bob Marley loved John, as did Big Youth and many people like John Lyndon. So, he crossed many rivers, and built many kingdoms, that people from every music culture, lived in.

  • @TheMrgaztop Well said!

  • the first live music i ever went to see because of my mum and it could of been worse something like tom jones worse

  • Quite simply one of the most incredible natural musicians I've ever seen or heard. Couldn't read music, he just instinctively knew what was right.

  • just the best i have evrer heard live - al

  • Truly beautiful, what's not to like for goodness sake? A masterpiece!

  • Sublime!!!!

  • Who would envy the world view of those who dislike this?

  • @deltanine100 Not me!!!!

  • It says 14 people don't like. What's not to like? Doesn't matter if you are into this school of music or not. If one can't see and hear the genius and incredible expression of this extraordinary man then one shouldn't listen to music at all, in my humble opinion.

  • He was on crack right there. Poor guy.

  • @Scoob505 Special Brew morelike. Not sure crack was available then...well one type was I suppose

  • This is truly unbelievable. Over 270,000 people have been touched by this i'm sure. How this great man, artist, musician performs this is not of this world. There is a god, a heaven and if john plays this for the man above, he will be touched too.

  • Singular. All great players stand apart, not because of their speed, but because of their understanding of time. He stands with time now.

  • Beautiful

  • AMAZING ... THX * JM ... MK ....

  • perfection

  • I can't believe I've never heard this before, but I've just listened to it 5 times. So so good.

  • This is the best thing on YouTube.

  • always fascinated when i watch him ply the guitar its like he takes it and pulls stretches it twangs it in about every way like a kid does with its favourite toy yet its pure brilliance that comes out >>one man who certanly knows what he,s doing is >>JOHN MARTYN! ,,R.I.P X

  • Oh My GOD JM, i love all your stuff and i have managed to get hold of "AND" after much searching. can not get over the loss of you JM i have never felt music move my heart like yours does. i will have this played at my funeral too like a lot of JM fans this is the one to depart too. and for all you JM fans listen to hes "got all the whiskey" if i said its stunning i would be playing it down xxxx

  • I want this played every day...... Not just at my funeral.

  • Always arrive here after a few wines. Always blown away. Saw him live 3 times, not nearly enough, but thank god for small mercies. Bless you john, thank you, absolute genius.

  • @bettyfrascati You're one of the lucky ones. I discovered him far too late but I'm glad I eventually found this, it's a truly beautiful piece of music.

  • @lukec98 you need to give your dad a big hug :)

  • John Martyn possessed the power of subtlety and delivered with a torrent of emotion, breathtakingly beautiful song.

  • Keep on loving while your love is strong ...

Keep on loving till your love is gone away ...

Haunting words to haunting music. I heard this first when it was being played in the University of Pennsylvania's bookstore music department back when it first came out and I and some other guy all but rushed to the counter to find out what this music was.

Oh, and I long wondered what instrument was being played. Hey, I knew this guy was a great guitarist, but I'm still amazed at the sounds he made ...

  • 35 years ago - we used to get zoned out to this on tape in the back seat of our dad's Lancia on holidays to France before motorways - magic!

  • anyone know the guitar tuning for this?

  • @danarazzi DADGAD possibly...im trying to find the tuning myself.

  • @MetalMachineManiac I got it: FFCCGD chords are like XXXX1213, XX10101012, XX888810, XX33355, XX1113, just messing up and down the neck you should work it out. Ended up writing the song of my life with the new tuning, john's spirit running through me! Hope you work it out ok...

  • @danarazzi good on you mate!! Thank You!!!

  • music evolves. John didn't need to

  • Sounds like Brian Eno on guitar.

  • @BillMinworth Jungle has always been called jungle since about 1993 Drum n bass has been called drum n bass since about 1995. They're both still called that to this day! :-)

  • c. 2 mins in – is this where the Police nicked the idea for 'walking on the moon'?

  • If you like john Martyn you may also like Ruby Colley

  • This is where trip hop started!

  • @BillMinworth

that's what i've thought about a few of his tunes, sounds really modern?

  • @eatmycomments It's timeless, pardon the pun. It's the approach to the music and it's delivery that get's picked up on. Nick Drake is another influence often cited. You might not think it's there but it is. Another example is drum n' bass/jungle or whatever it's called this week. It's the 60's speeded up on acid!! all those wub wub wub bass frrequencies is probably what Hendrix heard but wasn't if you get my drift.

  • this week`s listen....

  • Puts life into perspective

  • R.I.P. Thank you John for your Music, for your Art and all the emotions. We love you. Forever.

  • was he racist against irish people?

  • @Scoob505 I don't think so seeing as he spent a very long period of his life living in Ireland and perhaps married an Irish woman.

  • wow absolutely superb

  • Puts the shallow to shame.

  • Robert Smith is covering this for a John Martyn tribute album out in July!

  • just read his biography! bit of a boy by all accounts! there's a photo in the middle taken in hastings on the beach. my old dope dealer is the one in the front row with the big bottle of piss!! small hours? swall fuckin' world!!!

  • don't know too much 'bout this guy, but he sounds like he was born with that guitar in his hands. so effortless, really sweet sound.

  • does anyone know what effect he uses? is it echoplex?

  • @yardling Echoplex with some sort of volume pedal, which I think is also made by maestro.

  • @kingdantje Quite right it is a Maestro Boomerang Vol/Wah pedal (sometimes called a Gobson Boomerang pedal) and an EP2 Echoplex - sheer magic. You can get a similar effect with a De Armond Vol pedal and delay. All the best.

  • fantastic and haunting, the best ever-sadly missed,i have 29 cds, two of them signed by the bigman, theyre going to my 4 year old boy-aj when i go join him up there, if you write john martyn 50 into search youl find a nice wee surprise i uploaded, its an old vcr recording he did for his 50th birthday, hope you enjoy it , rip bigman x

  • Other than watching bikini contest videos, this video of Martyn is all that youtube is good for.

  • A shining example of what one human being can do to push the boundaries of music and bring us all a bit closer together in the process. A perfectionist, a pain in the a**, a real musicians' musician - and a gorgeous man.

I still miss him. I hope to God you're still playing in heaven when I get there John. (Probably sold out - probably still with a Pint of Bass Beer in your hand! LOL!)

  • A wonderful voice that wraps around you and keeps you warm! absolute Genius, what a desperate loss

  • i miss john. so very much.

  • He died today 2 years ago...Im feeling a John Martyn night tonite...r.i.p. john..nothing like some late night john...

  • The first thing i ever heard from this man in my small hours in 1981 --i was awoken to a king --this is a true artist -- all these years later he still moves my soul -- God what a wonder - what a well of beauty ...

  • Thanks for posting this. Stunningly beautiful music and lyrics written & performed by just one guy with some help from a little box of electronics, a wee sip of something strong and a small "cigar". Fair play to you John for living your life to the full and leaving us this life-affirming and heart-warming song, something to encourage us in the small hours.

  • John! you're beautiful on this track and will forever be!..

  • John! you're beautiful on this track and will forever be!..

  • Magic...........

  • I got a minute in before I started crying, god I wish he hadn't died.

  • I was blessed to see John ,LIVE(X2),in the mid(?) 80's...Solid Air 'Days' -he was already fat,and a wee bit 'Over the Hill'......but beautiful! I'd have given everything to have seen him live in 'The Tumbler' Days : especially singin' 'DUSTY'......or any songs off 'Bless the Weather'...yet i realize I'm still a lucky B'tard'!!!!creashonrebel@yahoo.com

  • Beautifully atmospheric and soul reaching..None of the so called music today can reach one as this does...RIP John

  • 13 dislikes

    how can this be.......

  • @bangform Seeing that is like being hit in the stomach man, this is too beautiful...

  • @bangform as Ralph Mctell once said 'if that (small hours) doesn't move you there's something wrong with you.'

  • A wonderful piece of music written by a wonderful musician. One man, one guitar, for one world. Brilliant.

  • Have the studio recording on loop at the moment - brilliant live version.

He really knows how to make the right sounds happen at the right times.

  • Brilliant!! thanks for putting it up.

  • Wheel of music stoped turnning a long time ago, who will turn it again.

  • so fucking beautiful i think im going to have a stroke

  • @UrbanGuerilla88 Me too. The man was a master.

  • @UrbanGuerilla88

Well hurry up and die then and we can put it on the stereo!!!

  • Love ya Foomphei

  • Amazing how something so amazing comes from just 1 man 1 pedal and an acoustic guitar

  • I love you John. I will love more than i ever thought was possible. . .this song is basically enlightenment.

  • @solidheir awww so sweet of you and he is heart breathtakingly good!

  • Managed to get a good version of this going with a Strat, a Danelectro Reel Echo and a Slow Motion swell pedal. Will try and stick on Youtube if I can get my webcam working. Such a bloody shame he's gone.

  • This is in my top 10 favourite songs of all time, Probably in my top 5 actually. Its just one of those songs where there are little lyrics and the music does the talking. Love it. RIP John Martyn

  • 11 people have no taste in music

  • *up

  • Was he gonna say "pass the marajuana" or "pass the hamlets?" Can't make uo my mind....

  • One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever created, this is John in his prime, sink back, close your eyes and drift away. :)

  • nice category of this film... animals? wtf

  • john martyn your the man, RIP

  • awesome awesome awesome

  • wonderful

  • Possibly my favorite Youtube video. I still love it!

  • Robert Smith!!!

  • Prestonboy, I am Irish and I saw John Martyn the year after that performance in Dublin in 1979 and I thought they were f&@£*n binoculars... but at the end of the show when the drink wore off I knew they weren't. Magic show... by one of the greats!

  • John a racist, I suppose I should have realised, with all the shit he blurts out with, that he would direct some our way one day. Only blinkered people feel the need to perpetuate untruths, as demonstrated by John here.A shame really that he should have such a destructive, hidden(when performing) "talent", to go with his obvious one.

  • @davidoffon I was a huge fan of him until that.

  • @Scoob505 I am pretty sick, I've seen evidence of it with him before, but not so obvious. But I knew very well. You see , he wrote and sang about that which was unobtainable, to him, so I do understand, I'm just disgusted.

  • @davidoffon Probably a rangers fan. Brought up in ignorance in wherever he came from in Scotland. can't really blame him but to say that shit like that is just unforgiveable.

  • @Scoob505 I wooden go that far. He is , though unaware so, informing us of his own deficiency's. Check out "Japanese ukulele boy", two different Japanese boys with amazing talent, the better one(Beatles) is going to be huge, he's only 5.

  • Tears. And you know John, the Small Hours. We all have to end.The days, the hours getting smaller and smaller. And we keep on loving. With you. With someone who made such a great music.

  • Actually listening to this in the small hours puts it all in to perspective. John, we miss ya...

  • 3:01 my heart hits the floor.
