These are all over africa, usually filled with so much shit in them, even the most deranged of people wond enter. So, people just shit all over the place just outside of the toilets. They DRINK the water in them and still wipe their ass with their hands, then on the outside walls. The plastic is textured, so it "cleans" their hands off. Disgusting people living in filth no matter what we do to help them.
no one is suggesting that america squat in shacks.
there is no doubt that this type of treatment in america is almost impossible
there are undeniable problems with our current sewage treatment system
this proposal is more about dealing with third world sewage
and studies have shown that anaerobic composting will indeed kill the microbes in the faecal matter. In fact, the US relies on this as well with its solid sludge treatment.
i like the idea that people research and try new things.
A glorified outhouse. Nice. You people really do want us to go back to the dark ages. An earlier poster is correct, it would take more water to get clean. I wouldn't worry about TP; it's already "green". They grow trees specifically for paper.

"no one is suggesting that america squat in shacks"
Maybe not squatting, but they are definitely pushing composting toilets.

theres no reason and its not necessary.
but it *begins* to address the issues of:
-micronutrient deficiencies
-soil depletion
-soil dependency on fossil fuel based fertilizers
-replicating complete nutrient cycles like those in nature
-huge amount of clean water that is used to carry a small quantity of human excreta
-the energy required to process this amount
-sludge is already a bi-product of US treatment plants (which tends to be contaminated with many toxic organic and inorganic compounds)

no, its ecological sanitation.
Its about not flushing 4 liters of potable water (not available in third world areas) into our waste.
Its about processing in the simplest, low-tech manner, while allowing for recoverable waste.
The way we deal with waste in modern cities is ultimately not sustainable.

Yes matcotech, these type of toilets work for both males and females.
bjelkeman 3 years ago
Interesting, Does it work for females also? I have never used a squating toilet. Do the japanese use squat style stalls?
matcotech 3 years ago
This helps in conserving flush water, makes it easier to process the solids and diverts urine for possible reuse in agriculture.
