  • 45 rpm disk runned as a 33

  • I doubt if anyone will agree with me but I think the new order version of this sounds better than the joy division version with Ian Curtis singing.

  • This is new orders version, the only non demo of the real song is the live version from " still" and in my opinion is waaay better than this, and probably the most amazing song I have ever heard

  • I like the pace

  • RIP Ian, in 4yrs Joy Division made better music than any1 else ever did or will

  • Good vid, thoughtful and touching.

  • Great video....great song....

    Ian Curtis must live forever...

    Tank You dagoavila

  • marvellous....felicidades

  • This video is brilliant and don't let anyone tell you different

  • my fave j/d song --love driving down the freeway at night listening to this

  • This is the best version of "Ceremony"

  • I was born with an extra appendage. Three thumbs up.

  • thanks for bringing back the memories. this song is still great today. i still listen to the genres that they helped create and influenced so much but sometimes it's great to take a step back and hear the classics

  • I believe this is the version of Ceremony that Stephen Morris sang on. According to what I read, they did the song first with Morris singing and then with Bernie singing. They were still Joy Division when this was recorded. They later re-recorded with with Bernie when they were New Order.

  • This is the version with Barney, obviously slowed down.

There's a version with Stephen singing it, and I think he's doing Curtis's original lyrics ( the allusions to the"sinking ship" etc), which they recorded with Martin as demos along with 2-3 other songs (Dreams Never End is the only other one I can remember). It's obvious the band were still reeling from Ians death, and that version sounds hesitant and frail.

It's a good account of their history though. I should probably upload it tbh.

  • Its sad that Ian killed himself I listen to

Joy Division lots even New Order. I like this album called Movement from them. they have this song called The Him the drum line sounds alot like Joy Division.

    Joy Division Rules!

  • I kw sad IAN died, I can't begin to imagine what the band would have been like if he lived!!! Look NEW ORDER some of Barney's lyrics & styal, voice over all talent!! & he was'nt even the singer!!!there would have been NO U2!!! like Tony Willson said "bigger then Pick floyed if he'd lived" ps I want to kw hw they chose singer for New Order?? On Movement my fave is DREAMS NEVER END!! they were actin like JD then they come into themself as NEW ORDER on the album after!!

  • this is the kind of music that makes me want to stay alive

  • Really liked the video, well done. Everytime i hear this song i can't help but think, what if Ian went on the tour bus to America. Very tragic

  • This video is exactly what this song need. You have captured the essence of the time and the feeling I get everytime I hear this song. The current video's with their multi-millionair budget really got away from the original intent of the music and the simplicity. You did a great job,and it's not amateurish, rather very stylish in it's simple but visually effective format. Thanks Mr. Avila

  • Thank you for your kind words and observations...iam quite pleased with this video as it was made as an experiment and mostly as a big joy division admirer...cheers and fears.

  • nice video :) ima huge joy division fan, if u can check out my ian curtis tribute i used this song as well :) i love it, shame it was never recorded with ian singing :(

  • It was in a sense!! on the album STILL & when he comes in the chorus its like nothing else, the other 3 could do with this song!!! it was live too!

  • its far 2 muffled to hear anything, i emnat a proper studio recording thats clear, the only one they have is the one that almost silent up until the chorus which is just very muffled, however i dont mind tbh as new order did a fantastic job of this song and it really would of made ian pleased i think.

  • what do you mean deborah curtis?!?!?!

wasnt she a bitch to Ian?????

  • I think this song turned out exactly how Ian would of wanted.

  • Beautiful, thanks. This is New Order. However, the song was written by Joy Division weeks prior to Ian Curtis' suicide. After Ian's death, Joy Division became New Order, and "Ceremony" was the first single.

  • Thank you!

  • lovey place Macclesfield if any one's actually been there, and Buxton.Just thought i would mention it has in the film you see all the flats(still there now people living in them)but a very nice place too visit actually

  • i want this at my funeral, fuckin brillaint song

  • fantastic! r.i.p ian

  • it would be good if it was played at the right fucking speed.!

  • mesmorizing

  • Its just beautiful.

I see "conrtol" by anton Corbijn and I really miss Joy Division and Ian Curtis music

  • Oh thanks Joy Div. and later New Ord for such a treat !!

  • Love this song then, and love this song now.

  • Cool vid, but just to let you know, that's not Joy Division you're listening to, that's New Order's first recording of the song with Bernard singing, it has been slowed down. (they recorded it twice - first this one, before Gillian joined the band, then a second version with her on guitar).

  • true but its still a credit that they SOUND like Ian curtis/joy division.....obviously theyre last tribute/goodbye to him

  • why disable the ratings? thats stopped me from giving it 5*****, top vid well done!

  • donsuccone

    6 stars !!!

    absolutely magic

  • cool vid man

    what softwar di u use?

    imovie?

  • this is my favorite joy division song

  • This is New order are kid,but yes mega track.

  • no this is joy division

  • Nope. New Order, through and through. They simply slowed it down.

  • dude its joy division, bernard doesnt sound anywhere near thta even slowed down,(i think) and new order never even recorded joy division songs, they raely play joy division songs at there concerts, its ian, bernard has alot lighter voice then that

  • there's only one recorded version of joy division playing this song and it's live and it totally doesn't sound like that!

    I guess that's New Order.

also, the voice... that's not ian curtis :|

  • there's a studio demo version too but this isn't it

  • Dude, it's New Order. Why won't you listen to people who know what they're talking about? There's only two recordings of this song from Joy Division and this is not one of them. Both recordings are incomplete; one is live and the other is a demo. The song was never released in its entirety by Joy Division, it was New Order that released, not once, but twice "Ceremony" on both 7" and 12". The voice you're hearing is indeed Bernard Sumner's, but slowed down.

  • Yep..... This is the New Order single slowed.

  • New Oder released 2 versions of Ceremony on vinyl. The B side was In A Lonely Place. Yes NO did record 2 JD songs.

  • the last part fucks with my eyes really bad. nice video:)

  • Que ce soit Curtis ou Sumner qui chante, cela importe peu. Cette chanson porte quand même l'âme de Curtis... C'est un des plus belles chansons de New Order Joy division. Paix à l'âme de Ian Curtis.

  • bien dit! quelle chanson, quelle homme, quelle vie...

  • R.I.P. Ian.

  • does anyone know where you can download/buy this track?

  • itunes?

  • limewire

  • You can find the only two Joy Division versions on the "Still" album from their final concert at High Hall, Birmingham University on May 2nd 1980, 16 days before Curtis' suicide. The second available on "Heart and Soul" from a rehearsal tape made in April/May 1980. In both recordings the vocals are partially inaudible. This is New Order from March 1981

  • slowed down by a 6th of a second.

  • @jonniedurex you can basically tell its not Ian's voice, I am rather amazed from your knowledge on this how did you know?

  • @TheDenisdrama ..... I was around at the time , i was a club & pirate radio dj in 80s manchester

  • @TheDenisdrama BTW ....Peter Hook And The Light are doing the Lowry, Salford Quays on the 18th of Nov;

  • @jonniedurex I'm Greek actually, they will be here 25 Nov as well. I don't know though if its worth paying 20 euros to hear Hook cover JD's Unknown Pleasures.

  • have any of you real JD fans seen Stroszek?...its quite good....its got this nihilistic and pitiful air to it....I would reccomend it...oh yah BTW canuck21 is right...that is Bernard Sumner- from the first New Order album his voice was deepened by I think Martin Hannett.

  • It's definately Bernard Sumner, Ceremony was never finished by Joy Division. In fact they had to keep going over the demo to learn the words so they could record it as New Order

  • i am so close to mastering this song,

then my bands gonna cover it!

    amazing song, really.

    R.I.P. Ian Curtis.

  • Ok, i just finished uploading "Joy Division - Under Review" for you guy's, it's a documentary, please watch it before my account will be deleted.. eeks!!

  • check out radiohead's cover of this song on youtube, its pretty good

  • but maybe you're right, anyway.. I can't decide :/

  • u all now this ain't joy division right? -_- they never recorded it convineantly AND it's so obvious it's just a "tamperd" new order version, it's hard to think anyone would mistake it for the real thing! and a prefer the radiohead version:) all's well, see u

  • joy division did record it. there's a live version recorded at their last ever show, and they recorded a demo of it, both of which are easy to get hold of.

  • didn't say it wasn't.. just it isn't that well to listen to! can't barely hear his voice

  • nah, that's only the live version. the soundman fucked up and forgot to turn up the volume for his vocals. that's why they cut in half way through. the demo is fine though.

  • ICB

  • ICA

  • it's not Ian singing?

  • yes it is.

    new order's version is faster.

  • No it's not. This is Bernard Sumner's voice in slow motion.

  • I don't think so..it sounds a lot like curtis

  • Trust me, it's Bernard Sumner. I'm a huge fan of New Order and I have this version on normal speed on CD. Also, there's no full version of this song from JD. The only two JD recordings are a live gig (on Still) and a demo session (on Heart and Soul). If there's one thing I know about, it's this song.

  • so this is in slow motion?

i prefer this to the original.

    thanks for the informations!

  • Absolutely right on the money you are. I remember the first time I heard a slowed down MP3 of Ceremony and I thought I had struck gold(meaning I thought it was a studio JD version). Unfortunately the closer I listened I realized it was just the NO single slowed down.

  • Although it's NO, I personally am very satisfied with their "7 version. To my ears, it is close to perfection and I wouldn't want anything changed, not even a Ian Curtis vocal. Yeah, you read me right.

  • good people have to die....

    too bad.. :(

  • well said...I agree.

  • May I ask how you slowed this down? Do you have this version saved as an MP3? If so would you be willing to give me a copy?

  • guys i need to know where that mary came from i need a whole photo of it im gettin it tattoed on my back can any one help me !!

  • you mean the statue?

    that's "la pietà" by Michelangelo.

  • still can't believe how good this song is

  • taga san ka pre?

  • Brilliant!!! It sounds special, as they were.

  • I love it. A great video for such an emotive song. As strange and beautiful as Joy Division was. Congratulations & thank you!

  • Je n'ai jamais entendu la version de Joy Division. A-t-elle été enregistrée ?

  • non, ils ne l'ont joué qu'une seule et unique fois, au concert juste avant que ian curtis se suicide

le live est sur la compil "still"

  • New Order recorded two versions after Curtis died. This is the first of the two. Slower, Bernard lowers his voice, more in the style of Joy Division. But this is New Order.

  • it's the new order version..."ceremony" never had a proper recording with joy division.

However, this is a tribute video for them...and this song works to salute the great band that was joy division.

  • this is joy division without a doubt

  • Joy Division never officially recorded this song. There is a gig version, however, floating around on YouTube. The sound quality is bad, but Ian Curtis is amazing as ever!!

  • It is New Order - Bernard Sumner

not Joy Division - Ian Curtis

    Peace...

  • MUY BUEN video.

  • So great! I loved the video.

  • Joy Division belongs to a strange period in my teens when the world seemed, to my young mind, a cold and frightening place. This song was certainly one of the brigter spots.

  • I agree with you guys who reckon this is the New Order 7" version slowed down. IMHO this was always superior to the re-recorded 12" single and finally saw the light of day on CD a couple of years ago on the double "Singles" compilation along with the long lost 7" version of "Temptation".

  • This seems to be the March 1981 version, but slowed down to lower the pitch. I've listened to that version many times, and everything in terms of atmospherics, drumming, and timing is the same as this - just in C major - whereas this is lower.

There are only two Joy Division recordings of "Ceremony"; there is one from their last show, but that's the one the sound engineer messed up. The other is from a rehearsal and has coherent lyrics and all. It can be found on the "Heart and Soul" set.

  • thx i found the one from the Heart and Soul set as a fluke and lost it and i have been looking for it ever since

  • Juventud, divino tesoro,

    ¡te fuiste para no volver!

    Cuando quiero llorar, no lloro...

y a veces lloro sin querer...

  • Definitely one of the New Order versions, the vocals are a dead give away (at least for me). I often wish that was a clear, high quality Joy Division version with Ian's vocals, but alas, it was not meant to be. I still love the song, though. Great vid.

  • Get the album "Still"-its pretty clear and quality.

  • Genius

  • the best ***** 5 flashy starsfor this !

  • i cant help but cry every time i listen to ceremony.those words those fucking words

  • This is the New Order version....Martin Hanett toned down Barney Sumner's vocals to sound like Ian...I think this was realased in 1981....The JD version is live from the album Still

  • best song ever written, regardless of the quality of the sound of this recording...listen to the lyrics...timeless...r.i.p. IAN. you are still missed. best song ever. period. god how it slices up my heart and heals it at the same time. the soundtrack of my life.

  • This must be an alternate New Order version. The song was written by Ian, and performed a few times by JD, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a decent recording anywhere (the "still" and "heart and soul" versions are pretty lo-fi, to say the least). This version is a little slower than New Order's single version, but it must be New Order. Anyway, it's fucking brilliant, and it's one of Ian's most beautiful songs.

  • There is two New Order versions. This "7 version was New Order's first ever single. What you're hearing here is a slowed down track of the "7 version. New Order later released a "12 version with Gillian Gilbert and that version is the same as the one on the New Order compilation "Substance".

  • oh sorry dagoa i didn't read first that this song was a tribute eheheheh...ehmmm:)

  • check my video it have the real version ( the one of ian ):P:D

  • Beautiful. Breathtaking.

  • muy bueno :)

  • Ολα Καλα ΟΚ

  • Cool video. Very Artistic editing. Keep it up.

  • Really cool video. I like it alot, especially the picture of the sunset at around 1:09.

Great music video for this amazing song.

  • this is beautiful. where did you film the part at the end (the driving at around 4:23) and in the beginning at 0:25?

  • Thank you very much for your appreciation. Very much obliged. The driving sequences in the video were filmed in El Salvador, Central America. The first one was on my way to "Las veraneras" (a beach there) and the second one was in the capital San `Salvador.

  • i want to go there now :)

  • this version is mby new order ,, right??

    i like jd better

  • is this by new order or joy division?

  • New order version...but its a tribute to JOY DIVISION.

The band themselves said that "ceremony" was like a last goodbye to their fallen comrade Ian.

  • i heard the jd version(live) in the album "still",so this is a Joy Division's song, not a new order song,'cause the voice that singed that song in "still" is Ian Curtis, you can't confuse it..:)

  • this is the Joy Division version. the new order version is cleaned up and the vocals give it away

  • WRONG! This is the New Order 7" version, but slowed down. There is no Joy Division version that sounds this clear.

  • And would you believe Tony Wilson has died today???! Fuck...

  • This is the New Order version,Ian is not the singer..is a great song anyway.

  • Many great songs out there, but this song really gave birth to the roaring 80s ( british music of course)

  • I can't wait to see the movie about Ian.

  • What movie on Ian. I am a fig fan please...

    fill me in.

    Thanks

  • It's called "Control" and stars a newcomer named Sam Riley as comrade Ian. It got great reviews at the Cannes festival and is largely based on his wife Deborah's book. Hopefully it will make it to our theaters or at least the video stores/Netflix.

  • ma è cantata da Ian?...Ian sings this version?...oh my god!!!...sono senza parole è fantastica!!!anke se un po' più lenta è splendida lo stesso sta canzone!!!Ila!!!

  • Great Video! Well done!!

  • I love JD its great to see all the fans on the internet sharing each and own ways to honor their favorite band also.

  • NOSTALGICO Y DOLOROSO.

  • Great video! Very well-done. It's at its best when there's the camera movement, reflections and "artsy" shots. I really like this. The stills slow it down a bit, but then again you need to show the band. Very fine, indeed. Thanks for doing this for a great song.

  • Brilliant video dagovila! it fits the song perfectly,it is a shame there is no version with Ian Curtis singing, but this is one of Bernard Sumners better lead vocals. It is so clear to see Joy Divisions musical influence in todays music 30 years later in bands such as Interpol and The Editors.

  • Is there a decent recording of Ian Curtis singing Ceremony? The one on Still sounds like he was in the bottom of a well.

  • That's what makes it so great!

  • good work

  • words can't describe what the song makes me feel....still after all the these years, I have the 7 inch gold/bronze embossed version. I was lucky to grow up in Manchester when Joy division were around . My biggest regret is not seeing them live, when I had the chance. silly me!!

  • Timeless. Legendary. Inspiring. Monumental. Contemporary forever. Beauty in the romanticism of the darkness.

  • Sublime

  • Brilliant song. Where can I find the Joy Division rehearsal recording of this song? On Heart And Soul?

  • it is certainly one of the greatest songs ever. such a huge pity that a proper JD recording doesn't exist.

It would have been utterly gorgeous.

  • It is on Still. A live version. Sung by Curtis. Although its much faster.

  • there is definitely a recording of curtis singing this, i remember hearing it a while back. still a very joy-divisiony delivery though, not new order yet.

  • This is neither Joy Division or New Order!!!

  • i agree.. poor copy

  • It IS New Order. That's Bernard Sumner's voice slowed down.

  • Sorry. But the 12" EP Green Cover featuring "Ceremonyy/A Lonely Place contains a faster-and I think superior version of this song. Google search

'Ceremony/A Lonely Place New Order' and you can get some interesting info on the production of this song/record cover versions.

  • The greatest song ever.

"Picture me in ten years time watching"...correct me if im wrong. Curtis sang these words on Still?

  • there were two versions by new order from (i think) march and september 1981. the 7" had a gold embossed sleeve and the 12" the green sleeve mentioned below. these were both the slower original version.

  • i have the green 12" and its just the same speed, but lower vocals. this video is basically the vinyl played on a slower speed.

  • I attended a New Order concert in North Hollywood Cali.

That was in the mid 80s, this song still haunts me today. If anyone has information on Ian Curtis and Joy

Division or New Order, please email a response.

  • in september the faster, more urgent (better?) version was released on 12" only with a sleeve the same design as the green 12" except white with a pale blue strip down the middle. they have different messages in the run-off groove in the vinyl as well "watching forever", "this is why events unnerve me", etc. i was absolutely obsessed with this track when i was younger so managed to get hold of all three.

  • if you dig curtis

check out silk tissue with the suburban lawns

she is like IAN i swear

look on my site at JANITOR

  • this isnt the JD version. it was cover that the later new order did. they had to slow the track to try and make it sound more like IAN. mininova said it was a bootleg....yeah but it wasnt them. or at least all of them....X( rip ian

  • swans / michael gira did a good version of love will tears us apart

has any one listened to unknown pleasures on magic mushrooms ?

    fucking hell baby !!

  • la versión de michael gira es un pestiño, por favor

  • Thanks for share with us man. Simply awesome, the best Joy Division's song ever

  • I still have this on 12' Vinyl! In A Lonely place is on the 'B' side! This is my favorite all time Joy Division song! The demo version hat Hooky dug up on the box set is the only full demo version with Ian's vocals.

The speed on this recording is kinda slow...

  • I still have this on 12' Vinyl! The very same ; A Lonely Place on the 'B' side! The album cover is green and features a brass/gold embossed griffin. I heard this music playing in a record shop-insisting on buying it from a disgruntled clerk who didn't want to sell it to me and during the same visit purchased something Architecture by Orchestral Movements in the Dark-thinking it sounded so cool, so 'New Wave' But that Joy Division EP! They couldn't have picked two better songs to feature.!

  • I cant stand this i miss Ian so much. A friend of minbe was going to see them in New york right bweofore he killed himself..

He is the best of all time

  • Señor Avila, I'm so thrilled to finally hear the 12 inch vinyl single! Where did you get the music? Was it the vinyl single released in 1981 or by some other means? ..love to know! I still have the record in a box in my shed though I've not owned a turn table since 1997.

  • i downloaded a bootleg of joy division and one of the tracks was "ceremony" and it was this version that was in it. I downloaded it from the site mininova dot org

  • Awesome. Been a Joy Division for many many years. They were way ahead of their time. Looking forward to Control. A New Dawn Fades is one of the best...

  • ...This is amazing. Now I understand what the fuss about this band was all about, and 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' wasn't a fluke.

  • The original footage is quite striking and effective. I could do without seeing the Curtis photos we've all seen a million times. There's no need for a tribute to look like a scrapbook...

  • Well done , some good use of imagery in there , ... liked the scenic shots , more than the use of the still photographs. Looking forward to the release of Control later this year , the film about Ian Curtis. The film got a standing ovation at the Cannes film festival a few days ago. Joy Division ... still reaching and connecting !!!!
