Based on what. No doubting he is a very good player but not one of the best in the world. His positional sense is really poor when he's playing central midfield. In fact I don't think any of his managers have ever trusted him in this position. He loses possession too much as well, too many hit and hope 60 yard balls. when they come off they look good but they don't really come off that often. Spot on video. Gerrard breaks down that many moves for England, and for Liverpool that it's unreal. He's always rushed, and his short passing game is actually abysmal. Yes he has flashes of brilliance, but if he is going to play it needs to be off Rooney, as he's not good enough to play midfield.

Based on what. No doubting he is a very good player but not one of the best in the world. His positional sense is really poor when he's playing central midfield. In fact I don't think any of his managers have ever trusted him in this position. He loses possession too much as well, too many hit and hope 60 yard balls. when they come off they look good but they don't really come off that often. See Scholes, Xavi & Iniesta for how to keep possession and control a game.

Eh!? That video alone shows you how many errors Gerrard made in that game. NO PLAYER can be man of the match of that kind of error-strewn performance. And I remember that game and the rest of the tail-end of the McClaren reign - Gerrard (Captain, too) was routinely dire and outshone by Gareth Barry.
McClaren was as enthralled by Gerrard as Eriksson was by Beckham and neither manager would drop either no matter how badly they played. Horrible, horrible times.

And as for Gareth Barry, note that he was singled out as one of the worst performers at the World Cup, and that people consistently slate his performances at club and international level, and suggest that Capello is "enthralled" with him as you suggest Mclaren was with Gerrard.

Barry was a revelation under McClaren. Introducing Barry was one of the few things McClaren got right. That Barry was shite nearly three years later in a WC is of no relevance here.
Although I was keen to see Barry benched a long time ago. His form has got steadily worse under Capello even before the WC. But the same goes for Gerrard - he should have been dropped a number of times during his England career but then he's a media darling...

Gerrard might have been one of our best 3-4 players (A.Cole, Milner and D.James the others) at the World Cup but he was still average at best. A 6/10 compared to most of the other players been 4or5/10. It's really nothing to boast about when all is said and done.
And the problem about Gerrard 'deserving' to be dropped is that he never 'actually' has been. The only similar example I can remember from recent times is the SGE-Beckham love-in. Football should be about merit!

Spot on video. Gerrard breaks down that many moves for England, and for Liverpool that it's unreal. He's always rushed, and his short passing game is actually abysmal. Yes he has flashes of brilliance, but if he is going to play it needs to be off Rooney, as he's not good enough to play midfield.

By contrast, Gerrard was dire in 2004 (remember the backpass against France?) nearly as bad in 2006 and average - at a push - in 2010. When Gerrard has a tournament like Rooney's 2004 then perhaps you can get back to me!
And Rooney still has time on his side. Gerrard, aged 30, is only going to get worse.

@wodney69 Many times. He doesn't have the technique like a lot of English footballs to control the centre of midfield. His passing is not good enough and he makes the wrong decisions. He's very good at what he does though. Shooting, power and pace and playing the odd 'hollywood' ball. However he's not good enough technically to play central midfield. Why do you think Benitez switched him to play behind torres with Alonso and Mascherano in midfield? Even Hodgson has kept him there.

Haha..scored in the world cup a few days ago. Im a big stevie gerrard fan and I remember that very game..and that was the worse I'd ever seen him play in his career ha. He scored 2 goals in WC 2006 qualifying then 2 in the world cup itself including a belter against Trinidad. scored 3 goals in 2010 WC cup qualifying. and already 1 against USA and people say hes poor for england.. :) The guy is up there with Messi and Ronaldo as the 3 best IMO. Fucking excellent video, an individual cannot possibly look at all 11 players on the pitch and remember how they have played throughout the game, I tend to notice 3 or 4 only. So one person shouldn't rate a whole team, they're making most of it up. Would be nice to see a video of Ryan Giggs, the man who can play 14 passes in a row to the opposite team and get man of the match.

If you stepped back and tried to look at these games objectively, instead of rooting through them for Gerrard 'mistakes', you'd no doubt have come to a very different conclusion. Putting the other 9 outfield players through the same biased scrutiny, you could make 9 more similarly daft videos.
