This caused a major international sensation when it was first released. I too recall watching it late at night when it was first shown on network TV a few years later, after much publicity. The point of the film was that the decadent German society of the early '30s sort of deserved being taken over the by the Nazis, which I thought was a little too neatly and unrealistically depicted.

Helmut Berger in drag as Marlene Dietrich was the main image used in the original ads.

the mp40 was developed in late 1938,most of the german soldiers still had early smgs in 1940,also the allgemeine soldiers with helmets are Hitler guards,the ones that should be shown would be the ss brownshirts or the ss with visors,third,theyre using sa armbands,the ss ones have 2 little black lines,also the collar tabs are wrong,these were used only in ww2,back in the 30s the allgemeine ss used numbers or symbols instead of the ss thunders

In 1972, I think, this aired late at night on either CBS, NBC or ABC. It was rated X when it was released..just like Midnight Cowboy which won Best Picture. Anyway, I remember forcing myself to stay awake so that I could creep downstairs after my parents fell asleep to watch it. I remember the gay orgy scene most vividly and fondly.
