I thought it was dissent anyway, but I still hold that descent would be a better word for the context. It could be interpreted to have a similar effect as dissent would in terms of it meaning fall/drop/move down which one could view as a metaphor for disagreement/difference of opinion.

Descent suits the context of diving in more than dissent.
