I returned a NetgearWndr3800 to get this router for better WIFI-Lan/Wan performace I'm dissapointed at the DLNA feature first it wouldnt let me play the files that i had on the HD DLNA compatible TV/Bluray player would not see the video files only on any PC that was connected to the router I did the most recent firmware update and got it working for a day it's been 3 days since it worked and cant get it to work I'm patiently waiting for a FIX or back to the store it goes for a Linksys E4200v2
OK-newbie here re:wireless. Current setup: DSL modem to wired router feeding mac & pc. I would like to go wireless, but need to be able to power off wireless & keep wired connections live. Can I accomplish this with this router & what would the configuration be? Thank you.
@drgoldenrodent Just disable the wireless radio througth the ASUSWRT GUI. The wired connections are never changed besides NAT/QoS and similar services.
Question: You mentioned it can be used as a VPN server to access our home network from anywhere. Can we do the opposite i.e: use it as a VPN client to enable devices connected to it to automatically use it as a proxy? I have the RT-N16 with tomato firmware which allows me to do that but I would prefer if something like that was available with native firmware.
@UnrealSid These routers are specifically made to be compliant with after-market firmwares such as Tomato and DD-WRT. So if you wish, you can flash the firmware you want and use the features you wish to use without the hassle of dealing with the two interfaces.
Question: you mentionend that with an Asus High Performance Wireless Antenna (i.e. WL-ANT-191) the coverage could be improved. How many Antennas do you suggest (as the unit has 3 external antennas)?
It looks like they spent a good amount of time fixing all of the cons from the RT-N56U. However, they need to spend more time making sure the firmware they use isn't bug riddled. Blatant typos in the UI is really sad. Luckily, that can be fixed.
@quicksilver4648 Blatant typos on the box are also really sad. It's pretty sad that they can't find a truly bilingual person to do proper translation. Avoid these products.
@beyondevolution I only have one desktop, Asus all-in-one PC, and it is connected via Ethernet. My other devices connected via Ethernet are my Xbox and Roku player. Everything else is connected via WiFi: four iPhone 4S, Lenovo T510 laptop, Toshiba laptop, MacBook Pro, iPod Touch, and HP Officejet 4500 printer. When I walked around the corner to another street I was able to pick up 2 out of 3 bars on my iPhone WiFi meter. The router handles all of my devices with ease.
I have this router. I love it. As people have stated this router ships with .72 firmware which is broken. I had no problems updating the firmware to .90 which fixes a lot of bugs. The only bug still noticed is port forwarding within the LAN does not work.
I upgraded from an old Linksys WRT54G running Tomato firmware. This new 66U is awesome. Up time is almost 7 days with ZERO problems. I would highly recommend this router to anyone, newbie to an expert IT professional.
Can the router put the USB drive to sleep when not in use for more than a set period of time? I have a USB drive (2tb WD) that shut off if power is not applied to the USB port. Thanks. Great review! Hope to see it soon with good pricing.
I really doubt RT-N66U USB ports could do over 20MB/s, i will be very glad if you could do a video benchmarking them, FAT, NTFS or EXT should be fine ;)
We will consider doing this in one of the next videos for the RT-N66U ( regarding performance ). Please check out our facebook page though for quick windows explorer tests using NTFS formatted volume showing impressive throughput.
Can you connect 2 of these on 5 GHZ band in WDS link to extend coverage? What speeds does it achieve with WDS link?

@drgoldenrodent Should be able to, it's a standard feature. You can turn off the radio/wireless and everything else will still work.

@14:40 good review JJ - however, the word is svelte and prounced "svelt" rather than "sl-vet"..

Also, the 2.4GHz WiFi range is amazing. Blows my old WRT54G away. With the 66U, I pickup my WiFi signal a street away. Amazing.

@KeithKman Question broski; are you using it for a desktop on wireless as well, if so what card or usb adapter do you use?

Very nice ASUS RT-N66U Gigabit Router Review, Thank You JJ.
USB 3.0 share ports would have been desirable.
A little advice JJ, please minimize the use of the word "actually" since it is some how annoying to hear it so frequently.
By the way, I have commissioned that router :-)
Thank You JJ.

Poor JJ.
imho people just should sit back, relax, drink a beer (or vodka for the Russian viewers) and listen to what JJ has to tell us.
