It's a shame such a hippie video went with such a good song. On the techincal side, the video is very good for a fan. But from a social-political standpont, it is poorly informed and bloated with offensive stereotypes and illogical, emotion driven visuals. The message of "soldiers are stuipid, they kill babies and steal oil" is immature at best. I am dissappointed that my favoite band would choose to assoiciate themselves with such out of touch, cliche nonsense....
@ps3specter There are a number of soldiers who I know who like the Offspring very much and listend to them while over seas throughout the war. A video like this betrays the Offspring's good faith with the military. It's like saying, "Thanks for buying our album, baby killer."
@ps3specter I think the Offspring should apologize.
It's one thing to say that the a war's objectives were not worth the blood and treasue spent in victory. But it's something completely different to depict our soldiers in the way this video does.
It's sad, the ones who die so that bands like this have the right to freedom of speech are the ones who seem to get s**t on the most.
Think, what was the last song made protesting Islamic Terrorism or the genocied committed by Saddam Hussien?
@ps3specter You're totally not getting the point of the song. And furthermore, this video is not -by- Offspring. As stated in a different comment, it's a fan vid for a contest. Please, make sure you know what a song's about before going and bashing it. Even if it -was- about the military, it is not at any point calling our military "baby killers" or anything of the sort. It's more of an insult to those in charge.
@ToySoldierAdder I know what the song is about and the video has nothing to do with it. It doesn't matter that it was a "fan video," the Offspring ran a contest and chose this video as the one they wanted to represent the song, they might as well be saying this themselves.
As for it not calling the military baby killers, how do you explain the soldier depicted in the video killing babies?
This video isn't about the evils of war. It's about the effect of the idea that 'killing is ok for the right reasons' has on people. You think that this song is from the perspective of a soldier defending his country, right? Wrong. Listen to the final few lines. The narrator is a school kid about to shoot a bunch of his classmates... the idea that 'killing is OK if it's for the right reasons' is the foundation of war, it's also poisonous. This kid is just applying that logic to his life.
This video seems to be talking about the evils of war, and how we send soldiers to their death. Yet, the current wars have been some of the most bloodless ever. The Normandy invasions killed about 6400 Americans. Slightly less than that have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Also, many of the horrors of war have been avoided by americans, such as prolonged bombardment, trench warfare, amphibious landings, jungle warfare, bayonetts, and the other uncountable horrors that keep men awke for years.
video made no sence at all but at the end im pretty sure they were talking about war and all of the things that heppen for example they are stating that ppl are sending soldiers to thier death and so on...
That's the wonderful thing about ambiguous songs. It can be about anything that you interpret. It doesn't necessary have to do with shootings, or war. It's just what the person thinking it interprets~
Anyone who disses this video remember that this was completely produced by a fan. The Offspring ran a contest with a prize of $10,000US to whoever could create the best video for this song.
@Kiwi691000 Good God! So if America is at war with someone, it's our patriotic duty to hate them? Oh, and if God tells you to kill someone, you go kill them? Guess what: Maybe your source isn't always correct. America has had many moronic presidents. Just because the government system is almost perfect doesn't mean we don't make bad decisions. We could war with someone for saying something bad about the US in a speech, for fuck's sake! Don't blindly side with a country just because you love it.

Hey a big question to you all. In the first part of the video theres a scene where an officer pushes troops of the pile of cars. A few years ago I've seen a shor animated film with the similar scenario, where general was awarding medals to soldiers, then pushing them off the tower and taking pictures of their dead bodies. If anyone know the name of that film please let me know.
my dads servered from desertstorm to the current jointstrikes in the horn of africa and he said that they hated iraq it was a hellish place, but they wouldn't leave until they won or had to
good song but we have to remember our country is turning socialist and we should not worry about other countries but us so we should fix our country more than fight a war not worth dieing for!
@LeaveItToBeaner because war machines take a ton of oil to run and oil companies are greedy. Oil reserves actually rose but the oil companies raised prices anyway, hence the record setting profit margins they had a couple years ago.

@LeaveItToBeaner I have plenty of friends who spent time in Iraq and Afghanistan, they also don't believe in the war, at least in Iraq. Not all military men are brainwashed. BTW, why would I sign up to fight a war I don't personally believe in?
@LeaveItToBeaner I understand that, and if they instituted the draft and I was drafted I'd be there in an instant. Just saying If I don't agree with the current policies, or those of the last administration, I wouldn't sign up to kill for them. Whether you do or not is your choice, and I do thank you for serving, like I said I know many service men and respect them greatly. I'm just trying to point out that not everything is as easy as black/white, good/bad.
and its your god given right to disagree with our foreign policy. because i spent part of my life putting it on the line to protect that freedom. so you're welcome and take care :-)
@LeaveItToBeaner "Spend 2 combat tours in Iraq"? You talk like you have done that. You of all people should know the mantra "Fuck Iraq" very well, as you'll hear it in the military 100x more than in the street. It was pretty much my units' motto. The troops dont support the war, and you either know that already or are a potg (or an fundamentalist christian) and are living with your head in the clouds.
this is offspring at their best, ive always thought they sounded better when they sound pissed off at something. it seems to give their music a bit of an edge. the album shouldve followed this sound more but the rest of the album kinda went in a different direction which was disappointing

it sounds like he's talking about soldiers being robotic. It's just the way it goes. Hammerhead, doesnt have a brain that is how i interpreted it. I never looked at the lyrics, but from hearing it. I may be wrong.
i hear you, johnny. the band officially says it's about a deranged kid who shoots up a school. and based off the lyrics, that's the only interpretation that really holds up.
my first times, i misheard a few key words of the end where i thought it said "and you cannot hide behind your desk now, and you can cry 'danger, come help me'," as if it were a soldier attacking some higher-up military officer.
so that's the way i interpreted it, and frankly it's still what i take away from this song.
Well the idea of the war in iraq isnt just because of greed, we had over 2,000 people die, out of no where for no reason at all. we werent greedy the terorist were, the werent concerned for anything but their honor for nothing and the 72 virgins they they "may" have gotten. were not geedy, were fighting for the people who were murdered in vein.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Not trying to downplay the loss of american life on 9-11, but they didn't do that for 72 virgins. They did it because we have bases and troop in their holy places. Not to mention we have plenty of their blood on our hands.
I use to believe that too until I saw the interviews of failed suicide bombers. As for 9/11 in general who knows, but I agree we have blood on our hands along with the rest of the world. Maybe we'll get to an age we're people stop defending either side.
well i think its talking about how selfish the columbine-causing kids were. They thought they were bad ass soldiers and were probly hazed outta their minds thinking they were doing the right thing. It's basically a roller coaster ride through the head of one of the shooters
In my opinion it almost sounds like they talk about the us soldiers in the song mainly because the chorus ill take a life so other may live... War is brutal its either you or him and if u dont kill him than he can kill more than just you meaning ill take this life 10 others may live, but hey who knows im prolly just an idiot but my opinion
I think its supost to sound like its about soldiers, but then in the end, its clear its actually about school shootings. kInda like the person in the song thinks of them self as a soldier, but is really just a school shooter
THis song is an excellent example of the nature of art. Yhis song means different things to different people. Some see it as a soldiers reflections on the decisions he's made, others (like the band themself) say it's the psychotic delusions of a school shooter. It is both things, I can see both of those arguments, so people, PLEASE stop saying the meaning IS this or the meaning IS that, because it means different things to different people. THERE IS NO ONE MEANING!
seriously, go to wikepedia, it has the meaning of this song FROM THE BAND!!!!!!!111one111!!!!!, yes its about a school shooting and the shooter is being deluded by the "hammers in his head" who or what that may be, no clue. but he perceives it as he is doing good because the "hammers in his head" makes him think it is..... go to wikepedia people instead of thinking your so smart. the topic has been done to death. we get it, school shooting = bad and stuffs, k?
I watched a video of a call to the police fromthe librarian at columbine high school, and at one point she says "It sounds like there going woo woo at eachother, and then shooting innocent children" I Listened to that and then a few days later, I heard this song, and during the last verse, the band starts going woo woo, and it freaked me out so bad
the video doesn't really have any relation to the song other than that it is what inspired the video. the offspring held a contest for their fans to make a video for the song and this is the one that won the contest.
no the song is about a school shooting and this video has birds that look like stealth bombers and has random shit put together. your just too much of a fanboy to admit it jerk.
To say the truth.I don't watch these videos...I just listen to the music...I was just trying to be a douche bag. Lol. But yeah its all random..maybe its got something in it.
it's not because twolines say its about a school shooting. it's becasue the lead sinnger of the band said that it was about a school shooting in an interview. and this interipertation is just stupid. how is this about the war and oil at all? this video just pisses me off.
Hmm, fair enough. I still prefer to think of this song as the thoughts of a soldier having to do terrible things, regardless of the songwriter's intent.
wrong. it seems like that, but at the end the "soldier" turns out to be a school shooter. "And you can all hide behind your desks now and you can cry teacher come help me, but through you all my aim is true." sorry for the bad grammar, I'm in a rush.
Maybe its about how our grandfathers when to war expecting it to end but in the real truth war never ends and kids get sent off to war? or something like that..idk..lol.
Because the makers of the video either misinterpreted the song or they figured the visuals worked well as a metaphor. See, the video was not made by anyone associated with the Offspring. For the music video, the Offspring had an online contest where people made their own original music videos for the song. This is one of them.
actually it is about school shootings. the singer actually says "and you can all hide behind your desks now/and you can cry teacher come help me." maybe you should learn what you are saying before you call someone a retard.
And zowls here's a little backup from wikipedia 'the lyrics describe a gunman who believes that everything he does is for the greater good - "take a life that others may live". He is affected by a huge force (Hammerhead - "it hammers in my head") in his mind that makes him deluded'
Read into it more. It's actually a really interesting song. The lyrics are written from the perspective of a school shooter who thinks he is at war like a Ranger. He thinks he "serves a greater good" (like most homocidal maniacs tend to believe). The first 2/3 of song focuses on this theme. The final 1/3 focuses on the reality of what the shooter is actually doing ("hide behind your desks"... "cry to your teacher"... "my aim is true").
im with james on this one. song has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with school shootings... i think you have this song confused with a completely different one by P.O.D. called youth of the nation. common mistake. not really though.
Part is about a Soldier and how his head ( relates to title ) is destructed by what he does, and the other is about a kid who does a school shooting because his mind is suffering from other kids.
WTF??? I do not understand what the hell is going on in this vid. I figured it would be more about the military or war or something but babies and pigs and kids, i really dont understand what any of that has to do with anything said.
i luvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv this song it rocksvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
Wow it took me reading a few comments to realize how sheltered American society is, idiots talking as though soldiers are mindless fools until you can do what they do and live to keep your opinion Id shut up because they're willing to kill and die so that you can keep trying to do what ever you decide you want to do so ok lets get rid of the troops lets see you fight your own battle Im more then willing to bet that you'll die.
The pig in the suit and the elephant resemble corporate government greed, and the republican symbol. Remember, this was when bush was still in office. (the republican symbol meaning he was causing the chaos in the video, (i guess)) and 1:54 scares the shit out of me.
music is awesome but the video is soooooooo political, kinda kills the edge of the song.

In my opinion it almost sounds like they talk about the us soldiers in the song mainly because the chorus ill take a life so other may live... War is brutal its either you or him and if u dont kill him than he can kill more than just you meaning ill take this life 10 others may live, but hey who knows im prolly just an idiot but my opinion
babyboychaser 2 years ago
I think its supost to sound like its about soldiers, but then in the end, its clear its actually about school shootings. kInda like the person in the song thinks of them self as a soldier, but is really just a school shooter

some people do not understand songs. they should fuck off and listen to some simple nursery rhymes that they could understand.
azntri4dz 2 years ago 3
THis song is an excellent example of the nature of art. Yhis song means different things to different people. Some see it as a soldiers reflections on the decisions he's made, others (like the band themself) say it's the psychotic delusions of a school shooter. It is both things, I can see both of those arguments, so people, PLEASE stop saying the meaning IS this or the meaning IS that, because it means different things to different people. THERE IS NO ONE MEANING!
Schwarzfogel 2 years ago 7
seriously, go to wikepedia, it has the meaning of this song FROM THE BAND!!!!!!!111one111!!!!!, yes its about a school shooting and the shooter is being deluded by the "hammers in his head" who or what that may be, no clue. but he perceives it as he is doing good because the "hammers in his head" makes him think it is..... go to wikepedia people instead of thinking your so smart. the topic has been done to death. we get it, school shooting = bad and stuffs, k?

I watched a video of a call to the police fromthe librarian at columbine high school, and at one point she says "It sounds like there going woo woo at eachother, and then shooting innocent children" I Listened to that and then a few days later, I heard this song, and during the last verse, the band starts going woo woo, and it freaked me out so bad

i heard this song first time today and i realized that it sounds like motorhead's overkill. anybody agree?
kevon32 2 years ago
There is no absolutely correct interpretation of the song.
rattlehead9127 2 years ago
the video doesn't really have any relation to the song other than that it is what inspired the video. the offspring held a contest for their fans to make a video for the song and this is the one that won the contest.

they always do that , they put videos that have no relation with the songs

no the song is about a school shooting and this video has birds that look like stealth bombers and has random shit put together. your just too much of a fanboy to admit it jerk.
cpfullback 2 years ago
To say the truth.I don't watch these videos...I just listen to the music...I was just trying to be a douche bag. Lol. But yeah its all random..maybe its got something in it.

it's not because twolines say its about a school shooting. it's becasue the lead sinnger of the band said that it was about a school shooting in an interview. and this interipertation is just stupid. how is this about the war and oil at all? this video just pisses me off.
cpfullback 2 years ago
Hmm, fair enough. I still prefer to think of this song as the thoughts of a soldier having to do terrible things, regardless of the songwriter's intent.
rattlehead9127 2 years ago 2
Sounds like a war song to me until the very end bit
Himmelmann16 2 years ago
dude its about soliders...I think..
threexjakes 2 years ago
wrong. it seems like that, but at the end the "soldier" turns out to be a school shooter. "And you can all hide behind your desks now and you can cry teacher come help me, but through you all my aim is true." sorry for the bad grammar, I'm in a rush.
KnightOfTheSeal 2 years ago
Maybe its about how our grandfathers when to war expecting it to end but in the real truth war never ends and kids get sent off to war? or something like that..idk..lol.

Because the makers of the video either misinterpreted the song or they figured the visuals worked well as a metaphor. See, the video was not made by anyone associated with the Offspring. For the music video, the Offspring had an online contest where people made their own original music videos for the song. This is one of them.

Similarity bass riff from Nirvana - "Stay Away"
2:40 and on
...rip-off :/
Rockspider2 2 years ago
You're right. But I think The Offspring perfected this specific bass riff... I just think it carries more in Hammerhead than in Stay Away.

actually it is about school shootings. the singer actually says "and you can all hide behind your desks now/and you can cry teacher come help me." maybe you should learn what you are saying before you call someone a retard.
ZowlsS11 2 years ago
And zowls here's a little backup from wikipedia 'the lyrics describe a gunman who believes that everything he does is for the greater good - "take a life that others may live". He is affected by a huge force (Hammerhead - "it hammers in my head") in his mind that makes him deluded'
SnowDragon55 2 years ago
Read into it more. It's actually a really interesting song. The lyrics are written from the perspective of a school shooter who thinks he is at war like a Ranger. He thinks he "serves a greater good" (like most homocidal maniacs tend to believe). The first 2/3 of song focuses on this theme. The final 1/3 focuses on the reality of what the shooter is actually doing ("hide behind your desks"... "cry to your teacher"... "my aim is true").

It's about school shootings.
BreffmintsMDV2010 2 years ago
im with james on this one. song has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with school shootings... i think you have this song confused with a completely different one by P.O.D. called youth of the nation. common mistake. not really though.

Part is about a Soldier and how his head ( relates to title ) is destructed by what he does, and the other is about a kid who does a school shooting because his mind is suffering from other kids.
