  • awesome

  • God, not knowing how to make that amazing sound with the sax, like in the solo, is going to kill me

  • We r playing this in my jr. High jazz band:)

  • This is absolutely great. I love it.

  • groovin moderately fluffy

  • My HS jazz band is giving this very arrangement a try. I'm lead trumpet and hitting those high notes is a real chops killer. That why we're saving this piece for last. Lol

  • @Digman2012 Im playing this in my MS Jazz Band

  • @WWEFan0412

We don't have a MS Jazz Band, lucky!

  • @Digman2012 Well its probably because the school I go to has a great band department...not to brag or anything.

  • @WWEFan0412

Yeah, our program sucks. We get $1500 and the rest we have to make through fundraising and grants.

  • This is my Jazz audition piece! From 2:41 to about 3:16.

  • lead trumpet player has 0 chops at the end... Lol

  • @corymurray yeah the lead guy sucks balls.is this amateur hour?

  • All these comments about Sax Lineup is complete rubbish. I wouldn't line my saxes up any other way. Both the leads need to be able to be together and communicate with each other.

Amazing version of this. Shame im in the UK or I would come and see you guys play.

  • @MrSaxlad We are touring Europe this summer - We'll be playing the Montreux, North Sea (w/Joe Lovano), and Beaujolais Jazz Festivals. How close are you?

    Miles

  • Comment removed

  • @milesosland Unfortunately not. Wrong side of the water for me :D If you ever come to GB though let me know and I will come.

Good Luck on your European Tour though, I expect you will really enjoy it.

  • My wife used to play this when she was in the marching band in high school.

  • Miles is one of the most respected and successful College/Professional Jazz Ensemble Performers/Directors in the country. I find it humorous that people would question how he sets up his band! I guess Grammy nominations and a plethora of awards and critical acclaim mean nothing to some folks who make erroneous comments. Great job Miles and UKJE.

  • Finally a band that can play this well (besides buddy richs band)

  • I love the "G" the trombones do at the end

  • that was amazing. Middle trumpet really swingin lol!

  • little fast its called grovin hard not grovin fast it jazz bot rock

  • @mexicansdanceing If you listen to the Buddy Rich recording, he takes it much faster than this. Maybe your director slowed yours down to make it easier for a "middle school jazz band"

  • great job with the soli section. I struggle playing that....I am a begginner in jazz, but LOVE playing it.

  • @TW11452

I'm also a beginner at jazz

  • wow am in middle school jazz band and we sound better

  • Comment removed

  • @skyebloo13 Lets hear it then! Otherwise, I will not ever believe you.

  • @mexicansdanceing Lets hear it then! Otherwise, I will not ever believe you.

  • man the reeds are killin it!

  • What's with the tacos?

  • drummer made a lot of mistakes.

  • sounds amazing my favorite song in our jazz band...cept the little thing the trombones do at the beginning their solo type thing....its all slurred when we play it

  • why do pianists always comp at the beginning? IT SOUNDS AWFUL DON'T DO IT

  • Its usually done to help other sections keep time at the beginning and help the whole band enter at the same time but we didn't even do it when I was in middle school jazz band.

  • T2,A2,A1,T1,Barri

  • hahah, osland just comes on here and tells everyone whats up. sick sax soli.

  • in our jazz band, there's me(bari), tenor, alto, alto, alto, tenor

  • The Tenor soloist looks like Gabe Newell

  • @ebyros lol yes :D

  • bass needs to be turned up a little

  • lead trumpet fold

  • drummer a little lame

  • Great tune that Buddy Rich's band did to perfection. Something's amiss here, I think they need to speed it up a bit, everyone seems to be constrained. Obviously a great drummer here who is restrained by the written chart. Guys, please, just let er rip. Take off the handcuffs. Please.

  • It's sad that there's 4 deaf faggots who down rated this.

  • @tentitans555 Haha it does, you're right!!

  • Why do they only give them a measly applause? These guys deserve a standing ovation!

  • This sounds fabulous every time I listen to it!

  • I love the tenor solo in this and the sax soli

  • this song is beast, especially for lead trumpet

  • they were playing the beginning too straight (just for me). the trumbone break seemed to swing it a little more though. The sax break was more than satisfactory also.

  • @littleshortkid

Go listen to Buddy Rich play it,

they always did the beginning very "ricky ticky"

This band is just imitating the great Buddy Rich :]

  • @MysticUnicycleBrah i understand. 8 months ago i didnt know what i was talkin about. but yeah i have since then listened to buddy rich's version

  • Not the greasiest sound, but you guys sure are some dynamic-fiends. Great job on playin' what was written.... Coulda felt the bass player a bit more... but i woulda def rockt out to it live...

  • that's awesome.

  • ha im playin this 2morrow @ ball state university in indiana for the ben davis 9th grade basie jazz band. wish us luck! go low brass =]

  • Man, I'm playing this song for my freshmen concert in March. I got first part and new braces.... SUCKS

  • Almost hit all the soli notes lol

  • That Tenor soloist can RIP

  • agree, need more low end saxes. also shouldn't sit altos and tenors side by side. but overall very good

  • @SecretAsianMan7 what else could you do bari by tenor is almost always goes sop altotenor and bary

  • @manta965 one tenor should be next to bari.

  • @SecretAsianMan7 i kwo it just that someone elso said tenor should not be by alto but you would never put bari by alto but ya tenor is usualy in the middle

  • Awesome.

  • nice! alto sax pla

  • I PLAY TENOR SAX TOO OMG lol

  • needs more low end saxes

  • nice job you did play very well

  • musicvideoguy1, I'm playing this song for jazz band at school, too! I really like this song as well

  • we are playing this song for jazz band at school

  • great song, but you guys need to speed it up a bit. it sounds a lot better when its going about 1.5 times faster. Good concert though

  • great performance, just not a huge fan of the way the drums sound being a set player myself. Thats not directed at the player, just the drum sound (player is perfectly fine :) )

  • I remember playing under the direction of a guest director from out west when I was younger who used this sax lineup. It's very annoying as lead tenor when you're used to having the end. Other than that I don't really care which lineup is used.

  • tacos are a great source of everything that's in tacos

  • Finally a sax linup I'm comfy with. I hate the newer ones my band uses this one too.

  • 2:40. That's hot.

  • sax player?

  • Haha, just going to school for it. A little bit of work and I can actually play it now, but this video is still rockin.

  • not caring for the sax linup. you need the lead parts of a sax line on the edges and the middle. tenor 1, alto 2, alto 1, tenor 2, barri.

  • tell that to Med Flory of Supersax or Ellington (even the Duke lined his saxes like on the video - T2, T1, A1, A2, B - for a while)

  • lol this statement screams high school jazz experience

  • Comment removed

  • @dontdodat00O This is the way we do it in our jazz band. But the other way also makes sense. Guess it just depends on what you prefer.

  • What's going on with the sax lineup in the front? Tenor, Tenor, Alto, Alto, Bari? Weird...

  • its called the "West Coast" or "Supersax" set-up. It puts the Bb's together and the Eb's together, plus it puts the lead tenor next to the lead alto.

  • Huh! Didn't know that. I gotta say I like the spread of the traditional set up, but I can see how this works as well. Thanks!

  • @milesosland ive never seen this before eaither but it makes a lot of sense to line them up by key and to have the 1st's together

  • @milesosland I just assumed that this was the norm? That setup has more punch to it than a lot else does.

Just out of interest whose arr. is this of this?

  • amazing chart, on of my favs

played it in middle school jazz =D

  • the saxophone soli is soo gooodd

  • ahhh soo good

my jazz band is doing this for our next concert

    cant wait

  • A great sound here on a great chart, with good sax section playing.Nice one guys, and thanks for posting

  • My 8th grade jazz band is learning this ;D

We be using this piece in a shuffle rhythm.

Is this supposed to be a swing piece?

Judges at band reviews said that we should listen to recordings of this song.

The arrangement that we play says medium shuffle..yet they told us to play in a swing rhythm..

  • than u should obviously be playing it swing rhythm

  • Horns in this are awesome! Intonation is generally perfect, articulation great etc. Pretty faultless.

Not so sure about the drumming though.

  • meh.

    sounds more like "groovin' mellow"

might just be the recording, but I believe their dynamic range is limited as well as their accents - too laid back

  • im in 7th grade and im learning this same song :)

  • same here

  • kool

  • Sup Michael

  • All you negative commentors just can it. They blew the roof off.

  • actually the drummer does really good in this song. he fits the style and keeps the time. in songs like this you don't want to draw attention to yourself (too much) otherwise you overpower the band and the song goes to shit. but he could play a smidge louder in a couple of sections lol.

  • we play this for jazz band.. yeah the sax soli.. is well crazy.. 24 notes a measure.. i mean really

  • this is such a good song, i played drums on it two years ago, still remember the hits... good shit

  • wow, lol lots of schools do this. me too! ;D

i have a wee bit trouble with the sax soli XP

  • im drummin this for my high schools band but we suck at music

  • the drummer needs to kick the band more... be the show. thats how dad did it, thats how america does it, and its work out pretty well so far =D

  • no joke, i wanna kick this band....

  • Listen to the drummer on this band.

He sounds like a total beginner.

Stiff as a board, no sense of swing.

    Pretty embarassing, really ~

  • ur a little hard on them... u can tell they arnt a high level band. but i agree on the no sense of swing thing.

  • Not really, he could use a little more color on the snare.

I think it's a great interpretation of a great song.

  • OMG my highschool jazz band just pulled out this chart and I am so excited to play it, I've wanted to play this song for sooooo long! I liked the Tenor solo...just a little too notey I'd like to hear some more stylistic pauses and rhythems but over all nice job! Also great job on the soli that is no easy task, you guys did really well.

  • what scale are you using for the sax solo?

  • First of all, i type however THA hell I want...you got a problem, oh well, deal with it...second of all U must be def or just plain ol' dum cuz tha world's best music comes from black people, cuz we're not afraid to go that extra step...i aint makin generalizations like u just did cuz i aint blind-sighted like u are, but im jus sayin you cant call it garbage as a whole

  • i'd say its good compared to how we are playing it. Evrybody wants to be the loudest and we are all competing for it.

  • i give props to whoever is on second alto

that part is way challenging...way more then the firsts so congrats on pullings it off great soli and alto sound

  • First of all, I thought it was really good.. Yet you could really tell the saxophones are a little weak in parts of the soli.. It was just an okay soli not to terribly great. In the jazz band I am in I was pushing to play this song but none of the saxophones could play the soli at all except me... Sooo good job

  • Congrats to you all, being part of a jazz band as a piano player, I really love the way you play. Rhythm is life. Keep goin' on! Ars longa vitae brevis

  • I've just realised that a lot of jazz bands I've seen on Youtube have that brick wall thing behind them. What is that? And is it a real brick wall or just a backdrop? What is it all about?

  • This song is soo much fun to play

  • My middle jazz school band played this (6-7-8) we sounded amazing but not as good as them but still pretty good.

  • Yeah our middle school jazz band is playing an easier arrangement of this too. To be honest, we're not really that good... but it's for the fun of it, right?

    THIS SONG IS AWESOME!!!!

  • of corse it's for the fun of it : ) but try and improve everytime you play it! as long as you're constantly learning from it and trying your best, then have all the fun you can!

  • Yeah, we've improved a lot in the last 2 weeks (since I posted the comment).

  • good lead alto sound in the soli

  • why can't the lead trumpet player (the one in the middle) stay still? haha, overall, great playing - great tenor solo, great sax soli. In my high school jazz band, we're this same arrangement for a number of gigs. I play the lead trumpet part, so i know how strenuous it is - great job

  • Sounds almost exactly like the Rich recording I have at times. Amazing. ^^

My high school jazz band's playing this, of course at a lower level.

  • Great song! Our middle school jazz band just got this song about a month ago, but we don't sound nearly as good as you guys (obviously)! Nice tenor solo. Also nice sax soli. You guys rock!!!

  • This song rocks.

  • Yeah I like the way the sax section is set up, I'm just surprised the Bari isn't next to T2. Great job on this song... sax soli sounded amazing

  • Yeah we are playing this song for jazz and we are pretty good at it. I love this song!

  • That was really good, our high school jazz band just finished doing this chart, its alot of fun.

  • yeah boy, that lead alto is killin, good tenor sax solo too, and the sax soli was on the spot!

  • our high school jazz band is doing this, its alot of fun.

  • Y r the saxophones arranged dat way?????

  • good question - thanks for asking. This set-up is known as the west-coast "Supersax" arrangement. From LtoR, it is T2,T1,A1,A2,B. I like this positioning because it puts the 2 lead players side by side ( A1 & T1), along with putting the Bb tenors together along with the Eb altos & bari together. This is nothing new - there are pictures of the Ellington band in the same arrangement.

  • Oh ok thanx 4 clearing that up 4 me. cuz i seen this arrangement b4 but i didnt kno wut to think about it so thanx

  • yea my high school jazz band's playing the yellow paper version of this and wow the sax soli's hardddd especially like the last quarter of it.

  • go bass, im in 8th grde and we played this song and we sound pretty damn good

  • just performed this piece on tenor 1, its very challenging.

this is really great, apart the drummer. not only is the feel completely wrong but the drummer makes the piece drag pretty much the whole way through. apart from the drummer, very good.

  • Since my first comment was deleted, I guess that I will repost the crux of what I said before. The band needs to listen to the lead trumpet more. Most of the releases in the shout were very ragged. Hopefully that helps.

  • bari sax = the best

  • no band is complete without a baritone rofl

  • I've performed this in my old band. I'd agree about the drummer (i am one myself) and i don't feel it's quite with the rest of the band... solo was good though...

  • Having played this chart for more then 20 years, I enjoyed the performance. Screw all the comments by the no nothing experts. The drummer made a good effort but is the weakest link and he should have been the strongest. give him time.

  • man i like this song. i have a video of my high school jazz ensemble playing this song. i like the tenor solo and the sax soli. pretty good. :]

  • The drummer is not really on point throught out the song

  • trombones are kinda stiff

  • did the tenor really need like an hour to get ready for the solo. lol he stood up so early. anyway yeah a soli refers to a solo for a section. in the case a sax soli.

  • His stand up time was fine, I don't know what you're talking about. I'm playing this song in my HS Jazz Band and thats usually the point where I stand up. Gotta set your mic and every thing.

  • very nice trumpets i like i like. im performing this for my highschool jazz ensamble and i have a try out for this song illl definatly get it but i just love this song ha.

    well performed

  • its called a sax soli not a rehersal

  • there should be strong jazzy vibrado in the first alto. it sounds really cool trust me. jus give it a try.

  • sax sectional was executed to perfection

  • Do you mean "sax soli"?

  • same thing

  • A "sectional" is a rehearsal just for one section.

  • good job

  • excellent performance! is that a reference?

  • If you mean the tenor, then yes it is a reference 54

  • amazing! except trumpets could be improved

  • I'm happy to hear the ORIGINAL version rather than that watered down version >.> And I think your tenor saxophonist did very well on the solo =]

  • This version sounds real good, heard lots of bad ones in the last hour, but like i already said great!

  • cool! that was really good. it could be a little louder, but its still good. my middle school does this song, and its really fun to play.

  • nice, my school is playing this in a competition

  • Alright Miles -- put some OLD SCHOOL videos on. Larry has a buttload of em!!

  • great job

  • Played to death by amateurs!

  • <center><small>

Our jazz band is playing this this year <3

    I love it :D
