What a perfect start to the 1960's? I remember listening to this over and over as an 8y/o on my big sisters borrowed Dansette in 1960, a kinda melancholy memory now...
Nice to hear this classic & see cool video. This is still being featured & done up right by touring guitar bands: YouTube (Apache Thackery) (the 1 with nearly 10,000 viewings).
On this date in 1961 {Jan. 23rd} 'Apache' by Jorgen Ingmann entered the U.S.A. Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at No. 2 {for 2 weeks} and spent 17 total weeks in the Top 100. The Shadows version never charted in the U.S.A.; for me it's a toss up; both version are excellent!!!
I passed 20 many, many years ago, but we seem to think along the same lines. Makes me smile to hear that from someone your age. Think the bands of today are still trying to find something that makes them special. Don't think a face shot with a nail gun, grabbing their crotch and trying to shock people is going to do it. Talent might. i.e. Shadows, Ventures, etc..
My take on the genre of the current Heineken Ad (the date). It is like the Shadows meeting a full-blown orchestra and add some vocals { in Hindi to boot ). Hire a frontman for vocals who moves like Cliff Richard and add some go-go dancing and some twist moves. This then has the makings of a song clip that is quirky and definitely worth a look and also a replay. It will generate an opinion good or bad. Search for "Jan Pehchan Ho" on Youtube.
This instrumental should be dedicated to the brave ,noble & proud ,original Americans, who got slaughtered in the name of progress, & arrogant white supremacy....
@Hecling Yea...those people with their opinions...nothing between their ears...because they don't like exactly what you like. I don't follow the logic.
I saw Cliff and the Shads in concert about 18 months ago and the Shads played this. I expected them to butcher it with a "re-imagining" but they made it sound just the same and just as fantastic as the original. Now that is talent.
jlogmcl: that is really lovely. Whenever I hear this I imagine a young brave riding along the ridge on a pinto. IT was the first instrumentaI bought at the age of 11.and have loved the Shadows ever since.
Is there anyone out there who could put The Shad's doing a tune called 'Peacepipe' onto YouTube. I think it featured in the film The Young One's with Cliff Richard. It was just used as background music while the characters were trying to tidy up an old forgotten cinema to use for a gig. As the title suggests, it is very peaceful - slow and listenable to...well I always thought so.
I listen to music from the 40's, mainly to the 70's most of the time, and this is really my favourite era of music, but I'm shocked to say I have never heard this song, or of this band.
@DCLAURIE Interesting . We all know the R-n-R Hall of Fame only seems to induct acts based on sales. The Shadows sold MANY records, but they are just too obscure for us dumb Americans. This dumb American though is a Shadows fan and I agree with you.
we usually play in our band few of the shadows great instrumental at a party because even those youngters likes these type of intertaining musics. i wish to have this musics in which the sound of the lead beimg muted so that i can play the lead along,i mean something like the'minus one' format.
@MrLufillo But they used the the latest technology of their day. Hank Marvin had the first Stratocaster in the UK. He also had the cutting edge Meazzi Echomatic, which was a very advanced piece of musical audio gear at the time. That's what gives the reverb on this track for the lead guitar. The band was also involved with VOX in the development of the AC-30 amp.
@Koldobika8A you cannot be far wrong. Have you heard Beck's Bolero by the Jeff Beck band? That has to be a contender! Give it a go. If you like this...
My grandfather used to love this song. His last wish when he was lying on the bed, dying from cancer, was that this song should be played at his funeral.
We honored his wish. I remember the beautiful tones pouring through the church and how I had to shed tears from all the memories this song gave me..
I hope you will rest in peace my dear grandfather. You were always there to guide me and inspire me..
I'm guessing the dislikes come from those folks who have never heard guitars without tons of effects or power chords. This was recorded in a time when "electric instruments" were in their infancy. Groups like the Shadows and songs like Appache laid the ground work for much of today's music. Imagine what music would be like if instruments only backed up vocals?
@28211145 likewise you could ask musicians from their era to play it as well....and they wouldn't be able either ....don't get dragged along like a sheep with the rest of youtube when it comes to music...there are lots of people out there writing and playing very good original music....you need to look further than radio one. likewise there were as many people writing and miming to rubbish back then as there is now...although the sad sixties brigade will have us think otherwise.
Who would have thought that one of the greatest Surf Tunes of all time would have originated from a British so much on the cusp of the '60's that they look more like a a '50's band. Great tune, great performance.... hail to the '60's and the British invasion.

@Faustcab the effects used on this tune are Reverb (from the amp) and a bit of "whammy bar" - and a lot of treble.
TheJaytnt 2 weeks ago
@Faustcab They used a lot of spring reverb plus the whammy bar on the guitar. The Ventures used reverb with some tape echo also.

And there was none of this crapola techno angst that passes for 'music' these days.
