Gratz on finding the greatness that is R E Howard's work, may you get it all in chronological order as written, published, and then ultimately the order that Conan experienced it.
Beyond REH's works, there are an infinit... aww, you got it... I miss my collection. FML
As for L Sprague, he has alot of good stuff as well... thanks for the upload, ill be looking deeper.
I love Savage Sword and I don't know anything about those other 'color' marvel editions. You've read some of them obviously, Zarany. Are they ok? Is Savage Sword superior in every way as I imagine it to be? Advise me!
@Zippyzah Savage Sword is darker and grittier than the regular monthly color comics were, as it wasn't subject to the same rules imposed by the Comics Code Authority. The newer comics from Dark Horse are also quite good, also not subject to the same rules and therefore tend to cut loose a lot more. Now that's not to say the monthly series isn't worth a look, it still has great stories and artwork, just not as "raw" as the others. Savage Sword is a great place to start!
First off, let me say I enjoy all of your videos. I've been watching for quite some time now, and I find them very informative and fun. I've been a Conan fan for as long as I can remember. I can remember going & seeing the '82 film in the theater like it was yesterday, and that pretty much got me hooked on Conan for the rest of my life. I have most of the original Marvel comic series, as well as the SSOC series. I still need to pick up vol.10 of the TPB. Looking forward to part 2 of this video!
I've said it before but it bares repeating. These are by far my favorite type of MMC episodes because you give so much detail & make it so easy for us to start our own collections. I so greatly appreciate it! BTW just now noticed you have a directors marker in the back round too, great minds eh? hehe
Very impressive Conan Collection, also some of the books especially with the illustrations are a must have. It's been a while since I've read Savage Sword of Conan but those comics I think are impressive a little more than some of the stories recently. Good stuff sir.
My Robert E. Howard Shelf: All three Conan movies, season 1 of Conan the Adventure, Volumes 0,1,and 7 of the Dark Horse Series, The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian (my favorite book mind you) The Conan Video Game for the Xbox 360, and Del Ray's Kull of Atlantis collection
@earthguardian2 Not yet, though I've checked them out at the store and they look FANTASTIC. I'm focusing on the Marvel collections first, then I'll get the Dark Horse ones.
@cloontrooper I agree! It's hands down the closest we've had yet to a faithful interpretation of the character on screen. I'll be talking about some of the criticisms, comparisons and just plain idiotic comments about the new movie in the next vid. INCOMING RANT ALERT!
I have not seen people this ticked off since spy kids 4 all the time in the world was released.
The elephant god we better not make him made he might throw his trunk and the kitchen sink at us. Samaria isn’t that in Belogra” This is not the time to be singing histaria theme and brain is not amused. Hello brain. Not amused. Don’t know about the devil in iron but I now of hells kitchen.
Howard was a great writer and his Conan stuff is legendary. It's interesting watching the "making of" documentary on the original Conan the Barbarian DVD where director John Milius talks about Howard's origins of Conan. Not sure how accurate that story is!
@Ninkyo893 Hahaha! Yes, that doc makes Howard sound a tad....insane! Fun to imagine Conan being his "muse" in that way, though I doubt it's actually true. I'm sure he was exaggerating, at least slightly. There's a doc on the Blu-ray for the new movie that paints a much more realistic picture of Howard's life and writing career.
I'm a big Robert E Howard fan so I love this review - I would recommend the Solomon Kane stories too (not the film!). Incidentally there was a film made about Conan Author REH done in the 90's called "The Whole Wide World"
Nice review, love the comic book segments. weren't those larger magazines also allowed to get away with more adult content? And i wonder which ones had that format? I know the Hulk did.
@johnnnoise Yep, the mags weren't subject to the comics code, so they could cut loose with the violence, bloodshed and boobies. Which is one of the reasons I went with Savage Sword first, as I knew it wouldn't be a watered down version of the stories, but just raw, visceral and true to the originals in tone and spirit.
@johnnnoise As for others in the mag format, there were a few - Rampaging Hulk, Tomb of Dracula, Nightmare on Elm Street, even Howard the Duck had a magazine comic for a while! Savage Sword of Conan was by far the most successful and longest running of the lot, though.
I can recall seeing some of the Conan comics back in the 70's but have fallen off the track sence then.. Would trying to pick up either of these books be good for someone either tyring to get back into the Conan or a new reader?
I want to know tpb covers issue in color like the magazine?

How did the Savage Sword series come into existence when the CCA was around?
CosmoShidan 3 months ago
@CosmoShidan It was sold as a magazine, not a comic book. So the CCA rules didn't apply.
