@SprPwdSxMch Because the range is limited to a few miles, not a few light-years. And plus, who doesn't want to be in a giant spaceship that would've made Carl Sagan shit bricks?
I have all three box sets of the original series in the new digital remastered versions. For the fans who havent seen it yet ,its amazing! True to the original but it looks like it was made today! A must see....
Mitchell's omnipotence doesn't extend to Kirk's name. And Spock seems reticent to admit that the "ancestor" who married a human female was his DAD, sheesh. Nice to see that the mythos was still nascent at this point.
This was actually the second pilot sent to the network, which was done in early 1966. This pilot did not actually air until September 22, 1966, as the third episode of the series. The first Pilot was called The Cage, with Jeffrey Hunter, and it was rejected in early 1965 and then reworked as a two part episode that appeared in November of 1966, and was called The Menagerie. The original version of The Cage was not seen till 1986. The actual first ST episode was The Man Trap, Sept 8th 1966.
PLEASE DONT READ THIS! In 1997 a girl called lauren was walikng in a forest and then a she just dissapeared no one ever found her untill 2000 when a yoing girl called Mary found her body and markings on her chest saying: I wasnt pretty enough” and now you have read this she will appear in your mirror saying your not pretty enough and kill you. by the way the girl called mary died shortly after.
As for Kirk's middle name (or initial), no one as yet had written the episode where it was firmly established as "Tiberius". And we never know what happened to "Yeoman Smith" {Andrea Dromm} or "Dr. Piper" {Paul Fix} after this episode, either. Continuity is practiced only by the diligent.
The original unaired version of this episode is VERY different from this one....
...aka "Roddenberry's Second Chance". NBC asked him to produce a second pilot after they rejected "The Cage" in February 1965. This is what he came up with; when the network saw it in February 1966, they ordered a series to go with it. Most of the props and costumes were reworked from the first pilot episode (hence, crew women in trousers). Gary Lockwood and Sally Kellerman had previously co-starred in the last "KRAFT SUSPENSE THEATER" episode, "Connery's Hands" {July 1, 1965}.
I have a question for any real trekkie out there. Are all the original star trek episodes posted on YouTube? It seems when I watched this series as a kid, the Enterprise was always firing it's phasers or photon torpedos at Klingons, or Romulans, but especially Klingons. I haven't seen hardly any episodes here where the Enterprise destroys a Klingon Battle Cruiser, with Kirk talking to Tau on the view screen, as a Klingon ship disintegrates.
@Eversio13 Thanx for that. I bet in the other 7 episodes the Klingons are getting blasted all the time. There is a Star Trek blooper reel posted on YT that I seen today for the first time, it's pretty good if u haven't seen it. Cheers!!
@unassuminglocal Roy. His name was suppose to be James Roy Kirk, but in an early episode, one of the writers unaware of this wrote dialog where his name was given as James T. Kirk. It slipped by the script and continuity checkers, and thus became cannon.
Someone just posted a clip that runs less than 90 seconds, but it may just change the way we deal with U.F.O.'s. Type into search: Captain Claw speaks out.............................it's a really cool clip! By the way, i loved tnhe opening without the narration. As a kid watching early syndication, I remember waiting for this one and voicing the Shatner lines out loud.
What a great episode. This is science fiction, not like most of the other crap on TV. And the production design is awesome. And I love how everything is framed. The first season of Star Trek is simply a work of art, something we haven't seen since.
yeah TOS star trek was equal parts adventure to human/social commentary... or the adventure was a vehicle for the commentary. it was more about the 'frontier' aspect which was unknown and dangerous. the next gen and onward took place in a more established or 'safe' galaxy and focused more directly on the commentary and character drama while often leaving the adventure aspect on the back burner, which was kind of a shame really.
@midnitemover123 ....you are correct with both date years. The 2nd pilot of Star Trek was first aired in 1966 and in 1968 2001, A Space Odyssey was released in the theaters.
IF YOU DONT LIKE THE COMMERCIALS THAT PLAY BEFORE THE VIDEO , ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS HIT F5 , THEY DONT WANT YOU TO KNOW, BUT TODAY IS A NEW DAY =) ENJOY ^_^
It's shocking to me how fearful the crew of the enterprise is of Gary even before he shows any desire to cause them harm.
Even when given the opportunity to leave Gary on the deserted planet Kirk still chose to go out of his way to track down and murder Gary...
They could have used this as an opportunity to observe the progression of man-kind rather than making an irrational, wasteful decision based on the fear of being replaced and misguided morals.
@Dyingdragon9 - I don't think his powers would have been confined to the planet. I suspect irrational fears could have included anticipation of him controlling any ship in or near orbit or commandeering any landing craft. By that time, his amoral powers would have been increased beyond mutual reason and ordinary controls. I suppose they coulda broadcast a quarantine of the planet's system but that be tempting the curiosity of the dark and corrupt. So, ya, Lord Gary hada done die.

I wonder what "Prop" dept. that tombstone is in.... its probably worth a small fortune to the right wacko...LOL, LOL, LOL
On the Next Anniversary the Internal Corridors of the Legendary Enterprise should be opened up with CGI to give it the appearance of Greater Internal Volume.similar to how sets were expanded in Star Wars: The Revenge of the Sith .The Internal; walls of the Hangar Deck should be seen in detail. The Galileo Shuttlecraft Exterior ( Cool ) should be Tweaked with Maneuvering thrusters, shield grids,Phasers, Lighted Engine Nacelles. The Overall Exterior of the Ship should be tweaked for the 5 Year Misn.
Anyone else think that that was one good fakeout? (trying to avoid spoilers) just deepen it a bit a foot or 2 and you'd be fine. And, he didn't even check her, could easily pretend to die (or using her power actually die for a few seconds)
A good Trekkie will notice the tombstone at 43:35 reads: JAMES R KIRK. Of course we all know his middle initial is T. (Tiberius.) But notice the name is in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. Why? Because it’s a dead entity. A fiction. Now look at your driver’s license, your Social Security Card, your phone bill. Notice anything peculiar? Google ‘strawman, redemption, recourse, remedy”. There you’ll find your answers.
Weird to see Spock practically freaking out at 9:48 and 10:27. I'm glad Nimoy got the kinks worked out of the character pretty quickly in later shows.
I love the blond chick who just stands around looking like Kirk or Mitchell's ornament, she has absolutely nothing to do at all, just stand around and look pretty for the camera. I guess Gary Lockwood was Mr. Sci-Fi in the last 60's first the Star Trek pilot and then 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Does anyone notice that the women were dressed the same as the men at first; turtle necks and black pants? I guess Gene Rodenberry realized his ere, and introduced mini-dresses, black stockings, and thigh high boots. All necessary for women in outer space.
@duran66 Just to let you know, it wasn't the men like Gene Roddenberry, who decided that women should wear mini-skirts, it was the women. Specifically, Grace Lee Whitney, who had great legs from being a dancer and wanted to show them off.
Actually, I think the story was that someone told him that - if they were dressed the way they were - the women would lose their femininity. Thus, miniskirts.
@duran66 I understand that the network wanted him to do this. They also wanted him to lose the Spock character. Fortunately he only conceded on one of these demands.
@duran66 Roddenberry wanted the women to be more equal with the men (e.g., #1 --- the first officer -- in the series pilot) but the network brass probably asked him to sex things up....
I hate to nitpick, but the opening monologue/mission statement is misleading. Oh, there was some..."to seek out new life and new civilizations"...but there was also much mundane tramp-steamer work - schlepping VIP's around, paying courtesy calls, mediating interplanetary spats, safeguarding valuable cargo. None of it detracted from the show - I watched every episode 10x - but "exploring strange new worlds" is a bit of a stretch.
The Original Enterprise Studio Model is the " Spirit of St. Louis of Outer Space." I first saw it in person in April 1982. Seeing the ' Actual Physical Entity " : ) That took me and the rest of us into Deep Space on television and in one movie ,in character, was a humbling experience. i still have the Pictures. At the Hotel that night in DC at 8pm that night, the episode with Miramanee was on. I was glued to the TV. I went back the next day and studied the Orig. NCC-1701. I was in Awe.
I noticed the personel card for ther charator played by Sally Kellerman is supposed to be 5-2, wiegh 116 pounds and be 21 years old. I wonder if another actress was originally supposed to have the part? It was handy that an uninhabited ore station, fully automated and which receives a visit just once every 20 years, has a brig where Mitchell could be secured, at least briefly.
This episode was the third broadcast for the season in 1966, yet it seems to have regressed in costume and set compared to the first two (mainly with Spock). I wonder why they didn't show this episonde first, to show the progression of the characters, both in personality and appearance? It was obviously filmed prior to the others, considering that Spock's later appearance is the one the creators chose to keep throughout the remainder of the series.
@babeofelvis The network didn't think this episode was "spacey" enough to hook viewers as a first episode, so they chose to air "The Man Trap" first because it had a scary monster in it. Seriously.
@markos824 I wouldn't complain about the advertisements. Unless you want to start convincing CBS that they don't want money, the ads make it so that they can put them up here and not charge us anything other than time taken to see them and keep Youtube free
if Garry is gaining power doubling it every day, what good would it do to maroon him on a planet? In time he would be able to leave there just by willing to.
Definitely one of the greatest sci-fi series of all time. I'm sorry but all the subsequent series seem like re-writes and updates of the originals. Andromeda played out like a test run for what Star Trek was to become though I must admit, don't know what was written first. Or maybe the series Andromeda was Marjel Barrett-Roddenbury (sorry if I got her name wrong; the one who played Nurse Chapel) cashing in on her late husband's unfinished work.
@topper4125 This was actually the series pilot with this crew. Not everything had been worked out at that point. That's why the uniforms and ship is also different as they were just using a lot of the same stuff from the first pilot that they eventually used as the 2 part episode.
@jawharp1992 Unfortunately it was on life support when he showed up. He may have no respect for canon, but money is what keeps the wheels on the Trek bus rolling, and the man has a talent for attracting money.
This second premier episode is almost identical to start trek the motion picture. Which makes me think it was watched little and or forgotten but yeah there not in order and this was the second one after the first episode and they had to change the original format twice. After the recast.
The increased volume of the commercial breaks is ridiculous. I wish terrible things upon whoever decided for it to be that way. It only made me really angry when the commercials played...I can't imagine how they thought that might enhance the advertisement.
All Vulcans had emotions, most just chose to control them.
Spock as half human, used to over compensate for his humanity, until later in the movies, where he came to terms with his humanity.
Vulcans have emotions, they even feel them, it is just culturally embarassing and offensive to obviously outwordly show them...and to others species it appears as if they don't have them, but to other Vulcans even their slight emotional ques are obvious.
@Dfloops Ummm...yeah...and your point? There is still a mythos and ethos of the fictional species, as well as a history of that species, albeit fictional.
@Orlor PS. Stargate Univers sucks. They killed Stargate! Must be the thing to do now days. Take a good show and strip it of everything that made it a hit in the first place.

@duran66 yes, but what happened to the blue, yellow and red uniforms?

@eaglesgogirl Those were added later to reflect position or rank.
duran66 1 year ago
@duran66 Just to let you know, it wasn't the men like Gene Roddenberry, who decided that women should wear mini-skirts, it was the women. Specifically, Grace Lee Whitney, who had great legs from being a dancer and wanted to show them off.

@skaught1966 Ahh interesting, but not very logical. LOL

@duran66 you mean NBC realized his err. they couldn't tolerate that Star Trek wasn't rating well and Nichelle Nichols was in the bridge crew.

As well as space bikinis.

@duran66 Or he had a very limited budget. Easier to make 25 of the same clothes instead of many different types.

@duran66
Actually, I think the story was that someone told him that - if they were dressed the way they were - the women would lose their femininity. Thus, miniskirts.
tenshinokuragari 1 year ago
@duran66 I understand that the network wanted him to do this. They also wanted him to lose the Spock character. Fortunately he only conceded on one of these demands.
hanoc101 1 year ago
@duran66 Roddenberry wanted the women to be more equal with the men (e.g., #1 --- the first officer -- in the series pilot) but the network brass probably asked him to sex things up....

Why was the blond holding Gary's hand? Such behavior would not be tolerated in the Navy on a ships bridge.

It was obviously filmed prior to the others, considering that Spock's later appearance is the one the creators chose to keep throughout the remainder of the series.
babeofelvis 1 year ago
@babeofelvis The network didn't think this episode was "spacey" enough to hook viewers as a first episode, so they chose to air "The Man Trap" first because it had a scary monster in it. Seriously.

@markos824 I wouldn't complain about the advertisements. Unless you want to start convincing CBS that they don't want money, the ads make it so that they can put them up here and not charge us anything other than time taken to see them and keep Youtube free

Definitely one of the greatest sci-fi series of all time. I'm sorry but all the subsequent series seem like re-writes and updates of the originals. Andromeda played out like a test run for what Star Trek was to become though I must admit, don't know what was written first. Or maybe the series Andromeda was Marjel Barrett-Roddenbury (sorry if I got her name wrong; the one who played Nurse Chapel) cashing in on her late husband's unfinished work.

topper4125 1 year ago
@topper4125 This was actually the series pilot with this crew. Not everything had been worked out at that point. That's why the uniforms and ship is also different as they were just using a lot of the same stuff from the first pilot that they eventually used as the 2 part episode.

This second premier episode is almost identical to start trek the motion picture. Which makes me think it was watched little and or forgotten but yeah there not in order and this was the second one after the first episode and they had to change the original format twice. After the recast.

@websuspect. No it's not. If any episode is like The Motion Picture it is "The Changeling". They are both about a machine looking for its creator.
