  • I like this audience. They're sophisticated enough to know not to clap between movements.

  • Simply Beautiful :) You can't compare him to Du Pre because they are both equally stunning.

  • I love to listen to this to help me sleep. <3 not saying its boring or anything like that. just lovely.

  • Increible, es el mejor!!!

  • 22 people are listening to Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga

  • @AlkaloidsAreFun I honestly think they just missed the like button.

  • Le must du must... délicatesse et sensibilité rare... moment magique à vivre les yeux fermés ... il ne reste qu'à arrêter le temps...

Merci pour ce moment de bonheur.. Michèle

  • bravo, bravo, a thousand times bravo

  • I did cry, this mov. is so beautiful. I watched jacqueline du pre play this mov. and she was too fast imo, yo-yo ma takes different cello concertos and kinda slows them down taking in everything. That's why I like him, no homo.

  • Sitting here listening to all the movements, it amazes me when one ends. I do not notice the 10(ish) minutes go by.

  • So much emotion!!!! I wish I could put that much feeling into anything!

  • I wonder if he practices leaning backwards

  • how can anyone dislike this?

  • Am I the only one who gasps randomly when I listen to emotional music?

  • I think this is the first time i've truly felt i understand and appreciate a piece of classical music, simply superb.

  • Yes, music is just sound in the elementary level, but when 'deliver' in the right way, it can resonate the human soul.

  • @lostpebble Yes! Well said.

  • People need to realize that if he wanted people to care what his face looked like while performing, he would have been an actor. He chose to be a musician. You are supposed to LISTEN to him. Don't judge him for anything unrelated to what his music SOUNDS like. That is all.

  • This is music at the limit of what anyone can possibly endure of tenderness and melancholy. So beautiful....

  • Anyone that can clear my mind with a masterpiece like this can make any face he damn well pleases! That's what I call passion! Close your eyes and hang on to every note and you will experience something magnificent and profound!

  • play the fuck out of that cello, yo-yo!

  • I don't have any offensive intention .. but this piece really belongs to Jacqueline only ... forever... I want to tell, darely, that no any other masterpiece cellist can't express this piece with the depth and width of hers ...

  • music is just sound, but the experience of a human being or the experience of human beings listening to music is a phenomenon that is greater than just sound, and instead is an aesthetic experience which cannot be boiled down completely into smalller parts such as vibrations and electrical signals of the brain

  • I almost cried at the beginning

  • and u believe urself to be ´true musician`? XD

  • absolutey beautiful !!!

    watch his fingers

watch the way he guides the bow

    and ... LISTEN

then ... if you are still busy critizising his facial expressions - please switch the chanel.

  • beautiful perform

  • its so weird and amazing to be able to understand when they dont speak.

  • excelente..........

  • Great!!!!

  • I'm sure the other cello's are humbled. (:

  • I love this video. Thanks for posting! The cello is just an awesome instrument; my favorite solo and especially unaccompanied instrument (even though I am a brass player) YYM is a great cellist, that's for sure.

  • The key change at 3:55 might be the most skillful key change ever. I love everything about this concerto!

  • Thank God for giving humanity the mental capability to create such beautiful music and instruments.

  • I feel so frozen in time when listening to this concerto. Every movement has something so unique and intoxicating. This movement (and the end of the 4th) make me melt.

  • cool

    lol

    funny

    lol funny lol

    funny

  • this is so very, very english. i thought du pre would always own this concerto, however this is something else. this musician is totally mesmerising, the performance is almost hypnotic. this is good, very good. thank you.

  • beautiful movement...had a recording with Pierre Fournier...he played it beautifully, too...long time ago...

  • This is going to sound hokey, but this piece really makes me want to cry or laugh or do something in response to the amazing music. It frustrates me every time that my body can't figure out exactly what it needs to do to channel the music.

  • I know how you feel. I get that way all the time when I hear beautiful or emotional music.

  • Your words, my feelings!

  • when was the last time you felt that way??/ what was the piece called??

  • @PChanmisao

i like to channel it through work. it calms my mind and helps me focus

  • @PChanmisao Dude you should smoke some dope then listen to the music. All your frustrations will evaporate away, leaving you to enjoy the music while your mind is nice and relaxed.

  • @PChanmisao Play the cello :D

  • @PChanmisao that is the beauty of good music.

  • @PChanmisao That's one reason I love seeing kids hear/see music like this. Their visceral reactions are just absolutely priceless.

  • his passion!

  • the cello is meant for Elgar.

both Yo Yo and Jacqueline played the same cello on the same piece

they are the best candidates for this piece.

  • the cello he's playing looks more like the Montagnana.

  • this movement always eats away my daily stress and replaces it with something nice

  • is he playing Du Pre's cello?

  • haha yes he is

  • PLEASE JUST SHUT UP, with your stupid flame wars! Can we just sit and enjoy the piece without putting all this idiological crap all over it?All it is, at the end of the day, is sound.Nothing more then vibrations.Any true musicain could see that.

  • @sutphoe I think I'll speak for most if not all musicians when I say this: you really don't seem to get it. True, music is vibrations of the air which our ears interpret as sound, but it's sooooo much more than that. Elgar had a message to convey; a message of sadness, joy, then once more sadness. If the audience is able to understand that just by listening, three things have happened:

  • 1) Elgar did a tremendous job of writing this piece; 2) Barenboim did a hell of a job interpreting the piece in his own way so that the message is conveyed; and 3) YYM and the orchestra (but mostly YYM, because he does it on his own) read Barenboim's signals and in turn interpreted the piece beautifully.

  • @omnimage446 Thanktyou!- I agree this person is not correct at al. (I am cellist)

  • @sutphoe Music is much more than vibrations. Music requires human interaction, whether in the making of it or the experience of it. Music carries with it much more power than that traveling through the air to your eardrums. It carries the power to move a person—to change them. Any true musician could see that.

  • @sutphoe vibrations are the rhythmic transfer of energy along with all things that we experience. Since energy is transferred through space and matter in various wave lengths thus rhythm, all things acquire this rhythm as a ripple effect. this rhythmic transfer of energy along with gravity and all other laws of time and space pull things together and create objects of order, and beauty. this song along with his others are wonderful examples of our rhythmic minds harmonizing with that of the music

  • @necromycus ARE YOU ON LSD??????

    NONE OF THAT IS TRUE.

ITS JUST SOOTHING TO THE EARS. FUCK.

  • Comment removed

  • @sutphoe I have yet to meet such a musician.

  • @Boxoz lol. I loved that response.

  • @Boxoz you just did if you watched it.

  • @sutphoe rubbish ... vibrations ... true musicians ... never dared to go beyond physics - ey ... coward ... och well, whatever, it's wonderful and very impressive ... and it's a flaming war ...

  • @sutphoe just dont read...

  • actually it is sorta of an orchestra...but more advanced than a regular one...(like what i am in) this is actually a symphony. And ik this piece is 4ever remembered with du pre playing it...but i have to say that i like yo yo ma's performance much better. idk y...but this is more entertaining

  • magnifi!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hes an incredible musician. This music is amazing! Those who cannot appreciate it should just go elsewhere.

  • It sounds very much like Jacqueline Du Prés version. Incredibly beautiful.

  • Those of you who posted such negative comments about YYM probably don't really appreciate classical music!!

  • @YourDailyLaughz

I really wouldn't call that a mess up... More like a noisy string change... I suppose at a performance of this caliber it could be considered a mess up but you have to get the bow from one string to another somehow :D

  • truly incredible!!!

  • I feel sorry for you because you clearly don't know how to appreciate music. Emotions hugely contributes to the creation of music. You might want to work on your music knowledge before putting this shallow comment here.

  • dude, lighten up a bit. i'm a pretty big fan of yo-yo ma. but it's true that he did tone down his facial expresssions if you've seen his later performances. this video was taped quite a long time ago.

  • Then don't watch it. Listen. Gosh.

  • @bluemonolith88 Music gives greater and more meaningful orgasms compared to sex. :)

Yo Yo Ma's facial expressions are completely appropriate here, as that is what makes him Yo Yo Ma, not some random amateur cellist with a face looking unsure of what he's doing. Every musician has his/her own mannerisms. You don't like Ma's facial expressions, go watch Mischa Maisky or someone like that.

  • i love yo yo ma's passion when he plays!

  • now that people realize I was being sarcastic, can I just say that I actually do love the Cello and this concerto and Bach's 5th cello suite are 2 of the best things you will ever hear. If you haven't heard it then search Misha Maisky's version here on youtube. And that was serious

  • i believe religion is an ability to believe in yourself. it's a way of securing confidence. a way of having an open mind. so i try to respect everyone's beliefs, as long as they do not discourage someone else's. :)

yo yo ma's music is very soul touching. :)

  • Sure he has amazing inborn talent, but that is useless without developing technical skills, which takes serious devotion.

Cello has been his life since he was a little kid. You have to devote your life to it fi you want to be that good!

  • I love when he starts to get out of his seat at 6:10 =')

  • Empire twilight style is how has been called this concert due mainly to this slow movement, this is a beautiful cello concert premiered on october 26, 1919 with Felix Salmond as soloist and Elgar himself conducting the orchestra in London.

  • I was feeling pretty down but after listening to this music and watching Yo-yo Ma I feel better, it's amazing how God makes good music so healing

  • Alright, how does a god make this music do anything for you? It was written by Edward Elgar, who is not an actual god, but was a great composer. Second, it is performed by actual musician, not a god, although again, they are all great performers. So, tell me, how can you accredit all of this work do "god's" doing. If you couldn't tell, I'm an atheist.

    ~Andrew

  • Who do you think gave Elgar the ability to write this music, or Yo Yo Ma the ability to play it? Who gave you the ability to make the choice to say "there is no God"? God did.

  • It's just such a pity when a human reaches the point at which no credit is given to humans. It is a a point where religion so engulfs the person that they forget that they are a human. The cycle of religious oppression of the human mind is terribly frustrating, and I'm sorry that you cannot think for yourself without allowing god to make you think that. It is a true shame that you are essentially brainwashed. Good luck finding yourself.

    ~Andrew

  • you have all reason to believe that andrew but no reason to become hostile. that goes for you too cinque. Lets just listen to the music and calm ourselves and not ruin our days with this argument.

  • A fine agreement. My apologies for coming across as hostile, I was just pitying you. A good day to you my friend :]

    ~Andrew

  • Who is brainwashed? You call me brainwashed because I don't believe what you believe. I believe there is a greater reason in the universe than myself, that there is a greater power than we frail human beings and that we are not just victims of chance. I am not oppressed by my beliefs but liberated.

  • Yes, we should enjoy the music here, I don't mean to come across hostile either. Have a good one.

  • I fully appreciate that you feel liberated by your beliefs, however someone with a reason for doing things telling you what to do and how to do it is control

oppression is based on control, not liberation

victims of chance is unfortunate, you seem to miss the point entirely on atheism

a joke goes on about a drowning man who rejects 2 boats, a helicopter and says god will save him, he asks why god why? when he drowns, and god tells him he sent 2 boats + a helicopter

were the pilots not to thank?

  • THANK YOU! Good to know people understand!

  • That's your opinion.

  • So you think he magically picked up a cello one day and could play? Wrong, anyone who plays an instrument got there by learning how to do so, even the quickest learning start with little or no skill at an instrument.

  • I believe that Yo Yo Ma was indeed born with this extraordinary talent. But to say that it had nothing to do with hard work & practice is BS. Any great musician puts forth a tremendous amount of effort everyday practicing.

  • did no one realise i was being sarcastic?

  • Nope, not a soul. :]

  • o haha lol, its hard to b sarcastic over the internet

  • maybe you're exagerrating "talent"? :)

  • who made "GOD" exist... that would be MAN. Animals do not believe in god. Man is the one who created "God" to find a meaning/purpose in life. Without human's "God" is nothing. And religion is nothing more then morals made by people. Jesus is nothing more then a person with high morals. i believe that Jesus was a great man. but nothing more, but was no son of "God". I am an atheist with strong morals. or in other words a christian who doesnt believe in "God".

  • beautiful, first time to listen yo-yo ma tho i really love this expressive sounds of elgar:))

  • CELLO ROCKS MY SOCKS

  • cello is the best instrument. period.

  • I agree....but viola is tied with cello. I think both instruments are very beautiful and have a rich sound to them. I can't decide which one I like better. I play viola fyi.

  • apparently viola and cello have the same strings, could this mean that a cellist could play the viola and vice versa?

  • a viola has the same strings, a d g c, but they are an octave up, so open c is not the same pitch for the two instruments. it does make transposing things from alto to bass clef and vice versa much easier, because with treble to alto the key must change. as far as a cellist playing the viola, its a diff instrument, hand-held, so itd b different, but im sure a good cellist could pick it up in no time, but violin-viola is probably an easier switch cuz more of the basic mechanics are the same

  • yeah thats right LegionMCR, but just to tell you I've been trying to learn cello and it's easy but still has it's challenges because of fingering differences...violin is a lot easier cuz of position fingerings, etc, but I'd have to say that cello is a lot better---i can't stand the high notes on a violin. So yeah DrBananaCampbell, you can pretty much play cello and then viola or vice versa and the violin with viola...probably not as well to switch to cello after violin. It's a bigger diff. :D

  • see thats funny, i played violin, then switched to cello and it was quite an easy transition granted i did develop some bad habits from the violin but ultimately fixed them when i started lessons in college. granted im a sophomore but none-the-less

  • i think when it comes to string playing instruments, there is no "hardest" all string instruments are equally hard, but sometimes it is a little more difficult for different people. For example, if you are short it's a little MORE difficult for cello and bass players( not be stereotypical, it's just hard for meh) vibratto is always hard, no matter what string instrument, However, it's the different perspectives and personalities of people that decide which insturment is best suited for them =3.

  • I agree entirely. and personality has everything to do with an instrument. If it doesn't suit you and are forced to play it, then the fun and passion just get thrown out the window.

  • Ok, get it right, it's Cellist. Not celloist. But I admire your candor.

I have been playing cello for about 11 years, but This man, my word, he is AMAZING!!!!!!!

Him and Rostropovich are the worlds best cellists.

This song is beautiful. Thank you for posing it.

  • I sure hope I can be right up there with them

  • Rostropovich is dead.

  • this is amazing.

  • im 11 and im a celloist and skater this is not band its orchestra lol

  • wow, his tone and overall sound is so rich... honestly i think this recording is better than dupre's

  • This recording is definitely of better quality than Dupre's. 100% due to the fact that current recording technologies are far superior than those of the 1960's. With this in mind, I prefer Jackie's interpretation/performance despite the audio quality of the video.

  • im 12 i dont play in band but this is amazing

  • I'm 14. Play the violin.

  • no, play the bass lol, much more challenging

  • I'm 15 and a violinist...still progressing XD

and every instrument is challenging all the same. And with string instruments we will always have to struggle with intonation...but string still rule!!!!!!!

  • this is not a band. this is what you call an orchestra. haha

  • Yo Yo Ma is maybe the best in the Whole World!!! I enjoy Yo Yo the same as our lates "Slava" Rostropovich or "Jacks" Du Prè. So are the Genious for the Music: necessary, also to unify our poor and mortally wounded World, not for racisms or Elitysms (YES, ELGAR MUST BE PLAYED WELL BY ANY OR ALL ORCHESTRAS FROM OUR WORLD WITHOUT BEEING MYOPICALLY "A SACRILEGE"(???). Peace for you, my friends...Only IMAGINE with this kind of Music...Share it with all you can...

  • Yoyo ma for the win! Cellists all the way!

  • I live the third movement!

  • goodness! no sheet music infront of him! geez! i mosly always need sheet music infront of me wen i play da cello!

  • I thing the 4th movement actually starts at about 5:40, but if I'm wrong, feel free to correct me.

  • That's probably because the other video is 10 minutes long already so he didn't want to have to make a fifth video.

  • of course he dosnt need his music. All solist memorize their music. Im only 17 and I can memorize my music within days.

  • very very true

just put it into your muscle memory

  • Not only into your muscle memory, but into your real memory, too. Bad idea if you don't know whether a suspicious note is a natural or a sharp during the middle of your recital.

  • incredible he does this whole concerto without any sheet music in front of him. amazing

  • We musicians must memorize whatever pieces we are playing.

  • It's true that when a performer is not looking @ score it creates a stronger sense of communication w/ the audience; it's the same reason that orators often memorize speeches. However, Sviatoslav Richter, in his later career, often performed with score on the piano. And I can't see how that made him less of a musician.

  • richter was such a strong player that i don't think it mattered whether he followed any rules. he played from the score because he had some memory lapses in concerts if you don't know. he had a very good memory indeed but i guess he had the type of mind that panics and drops things when under pressure. that comes with introspectiveness i think. i'm the same :-)

  • Yes, I did know that he had memory problem, and that exactly proves my point. When a person is such an established musician (in Richter's case, rightfully so), "rules" such performing from memory become trivial. Excellent memory and great musicianship can be two separate things.

  • yeah that's what i meant; any peculiarities just become part of his charisma. his memory was phenominal, he just lapsed occasionally. probably because of pressure/stress.

excellent memory and great musicianship can be two seperate things, yes but it's very rare, i think a very central part of musical ability is the ability to mimic; mimicry is what one builds on, but the shape one gives to one's music comes from a type of love that has been the driving force of every great art work in history.

  • no matter u look at the score or not u hav to memorize the music.

otherwise u are sight reading LOL

  • i remembered seeing yo yo ma in concert once.... I think it was with the San Francisco Symphony.

  • Mother: Son, you should learn to jump-rope.

Son: Well, you should yo-yo, ma.

  • gag??

  • haha

  • Beautiful. Wait, do any of these comments below even make sense to you or is just me whose not getting them?

  • Well, that makes 2 of us! lol.

Beautiful is the only word that is needed.

But, ah.... Well, if MATURITY, marvelously brilliant, and pristine joys, make their boat float.... Maybe we are just not of their mental capacity. lol

  • elgard a le gros feeling !!!

  • His playing is beautiful, a work of genius. Just one question - isn't his cello a bit low? Whatever works I guess...

  • When I play cello, I find that having the cello lower puts it at a more convenient angle for string crossings. Maybe Yo-Yo is using this to his advantage. That or it's a coincedence. We may never know.

  • While the downside is that vibrato feels uncomfortable, especially for high positions, but maybe that's only so for people like me who are used to doing vibrato with the cello positioned high.

  • Enix5548 ,

I guess we can call that MATURITY. He definitely symbolizes the pristine joys, 'beauty' and responsibility that accompany age. May we aspire to be like him.

  • Marvelously brilliant. Yo-Yo Ma plays with such energy one is 'charged' and always enthralled by his performances.

  • I agree. He even looks young for his age! He has much more energy than when he was younger in my opinion.

  • Yo-Yo Ma....A Giant of our time... The Elgar Cello concerto is a marvellous one!!

  • Na chi un buim der fot
