  • That guy plays a mean valve trombone. I'm sure he would also kill it on a baritone horn. I really came for Ed Bickert, but the other guys are well worth hearing!

  • You are watching the finest jazz musicians ever to come from Canada

  • thats right a telecaster! and he is using the bridge pickup!

  • The valve trombone gives a beautiful tone, I've never heard one before. So smooth!

  • Anybody can tell me whats the title of this song ?

  • Title of the song = Them There Eyes

  • You've got good ears. I think you're right.

  • Well you will be pleased to know I have one. I borrowed a Kühnl from a dude at uni. I use it as a ceiling ornament.

  • Teach more slide trombonists Tilman mate! Anyway Pat's dopleganger is cool; never mind the drum solo.. I hate drummers, their never in tune!

  • I am the camera man of this video clip. Thanks for all your support, my work would be pointless without having fans like you out there. Many thanks :)

  • get a slide mate.

  • You certainly do not need to see the guitarist to know it is Ed Bickert. One of the most soulful, tasteful jazz players of all time. Of course the entire band is a world class/world known outfit.

  • This is the best that the Canadian jazz scene has to offer.

  • i agree there are some really great musicians in this video but you cant say that its the best canada has to offer. where are you from? theres a handfuls of drummers bassists and sax players way better then those guys. but i agree about ed hes just wonderful.

  • @oldkingproverb .....Who is the best that Canada has to offer then? Please, I need a list so I can find more music that is worth my time and money. Back in 1990 these guys were old veterans, and they played as well as any small combo I have ever heard.

  • Oscar Petersen

  • Viva ED!

  • Stupid camera man...and this band is positioned so awkwardly, like ed is hiding or something?

  • ...and that's Rick Wilkins on tenor!

  • Yup. That is a Fender Telecaster that Ed Bickert is playing.

  • Ed Bickert. What can you say?

    Very best!

    Mark Hill

  • Ok first of all even if it is a valve trombone the man who is playing it is one of the jazz musicians to walk this earth so i think you can let that one slide. I'm studying with Kieran and have been for the past 2 years he's an awesome teacher and musician

  • I had Kieran Overs as a teacher last year...great guy!

  • thanks for posting.there was some great ed bicket clips that have dissapeared.can someone please repost.

  • Thanks for posting this. There was a fabulous tape of Ed Bickert playing "Night mist blues" that was removed from youtube recently. Anyone have an opportunity to repost this ?

  • yeah ive been looking for this as well

  • Awesome Valve trom, love it, more VALVE TROM!!!!

  • yuk valve trombone

  • i think it is about time then for him to come back. in jazz, nobody retires. but someone said he has an illness.

  • Ed, Man that is a great musical swinging solo for any instrument!!

    Mark Mosley

  • I can't believe this footage of Ed. Yes please post more.

  • Is Ed playing a tele? These guys rule.

  • played an old Fender telecaster all his life....he's retired now.

  • The Bass player is Steve Wallace.

  • Ed bickert is GOD,not Eric Clapton, please put more ED on youtube PLEASE

  • I still think Rob McConnell is as good a player as they come, not to mention his big band arranging. He always had great musicians with him such as Ed Bickert. It was wonderful to listen to! I wish it didn't get cut off before the tune ended

  • Rob & Ed did a couple of CDs together; just the two of them. I think one was called "Mutual Street." Check it out; you'll love what you hear.

  • nice solo from ed...one of my fave guitar players...and from an old telecaster...but what about the bass player, hes really pushing forward with those notes...brilliant.

  • it ain't the equipment, it's the player. Everyone thinks you have to play a Gibson hollow body to get the real "jazz" sound. That's a bunch of B.S. It's what comes out of the amp that means something, that tells you if the musician has something to say, & Ed, a quiet man, said it all with his music.

  • One of the great "Boss Band" albums is "Atras da Porta"!! been out of print for years..had it in cassette, then found the cd in Philly, Philadelphia Music Exchange, 5th and South Streets...lucky me!!

  • What a great, inventive band and, as always, Ed Bickert is fabulous. Easily one of the most unknown of the great guitar players out there.

-A Long Time Bickert Fan--I got to see him twice in Toronto. Lucky me.

  • I was lucky enough to see him a couple of times; also had the pleasure of attending one of his workshops & meeting him in person. Ed retired after his wife died about 5 yrs. ago.

  • These boys from Toronto are as good as they come.Rob and his large band Boss Brass was world class and packed with talent.

  • "Them There Eyes" . Great stuff, especially Ed who can't play anymore :-(

  • what happened to him?

  • Ed has suffered from Tendinitis for years and he hit the point, about 3 years ago, where he could no longer play. Fortunately, Ed is one of the guys who made some good bread over the years and I'm sure he's comfortable in retirement. (Not rich, but comfortable. He did a LOT of studio and CBC work over the years)

  • he retired

  • Ed and Rob are two unique musicians. Gene Amaro on tenor, Steve Wallace on bass and on drums I think Marty Morell (not sure).

Ed's sound from a Tele and a Roland Cube is astonishing. His solo here is great but he has no peers when it comes to comping. His 'grips' are wonderful example of voice leading. Don't forget there isn't a piano on this gig - and you don't miss it.

Hope Ed will finally get his due recognition! These Canucks swing better than anyone!

  • agreed! as a Canuck jazz guitarist, I can truely say that Canadians have always been under-rated in the jazz world. A few examples besides Bickert & McConnell: Don Thompson/Oliver Gannon/Fraser McPherson/Oscar Pewterson.....the list goes on & on....oh yeah....Lenny Breau

  • Rick Wilkins on tenor.
