  • I have Audio Technica M50s would the E5 work for it? Do I even need it. I have the iPhone 4s.

  • Think I will buy this and test with my shure SE215

  • Not useful if you're just using it with iem's unless you really need a bass boost.

  • mine doesn't say nationite on it and i ordered it from mp4 nation. no big deal just curious why?

  • Hi, I bought sennheiser HD448 headphones for my laptop at home. The sound isn't impressive so I wanted to know if this would improve both the volume and the quality. I do not intend on using with mp3's, ipods etc. just my laptop....I would really appreciate any feedback

  • I'm using my Fiio E5 with my Stanton Dynaphase 60 1970s 8ohm DJ headphones and I don't notice much hiss, in the older one from 2009 i did but they fixed this in newer ones. This tiny little amp will drive these 2 way (seperate woofer and tweeter for each ear) cans incredibly well, they kick those dr dre beat's ass. See my channel soon for the one simple mod that turns these into amazing headphones and is gonna cause a run on ebay. Already had to find friends pairs of these after they tried mine!

  • My god ! you are pretty rough with your stuff ... crash bang wallop !!

  • would theses benefit sennheisers hd448?

  • Worst I've ever got

  • should this work the same way with the fiiO e9?

  • should this work the same way with the e9? because I can't get any sound out of it :(

  • i know that pantera song from anywhere lol

  • i have the sennheiser pc350 headphone. been using it for over a year now and i feel like i dont get the most out of its potential.would using tis boost the sound quality of my headphones? tnx

  • how will this match with the shure 535?

  • do these have a big affect of bass on ear buds, or not really.

  • E3 was a pain in ass

I have been usin E5 For one year now and its still works great and this E5 is the best

stop wastein ur money on e3 if u really need to buy go for e5 best ur money can buy

  • Caveman can not talk

  • im kinda new to this stuff and i was wondering when would you use an amp?

  • @nyk10000 when you've got a shit mp3 player with limited bttery life, or you use DJ headphones and the mp3 player isnt loud enough to power them.

  • Helpful video, thanks.

  • Would this help the sound in my beats by dre studio headphones with my ipod touch?

  • how do you like the Fiio5 ? does it provide a really good sound stage.

    i have a triple Fi 10, custom JH13, sennheiser IE8, and a HD650 ( for balanced setup).

  • Cool .. I am planing to buy one of thous headphones amps.

  • need one for the motorcycle helmet

  • i have a pair of skullcandy sk pro, and the impedance is 64 and my phone dosent give me that kind of power does this amp help me out?

  • PFFFFFFF GET NEW HEADPHONES, THAT'S YOUR PROBLEM.

Yes, this will help you out your phone; phones aren't really good music players.

  • @TheCakeWasALie Loved the GET NEW HEADPHONES xD

    Scullcandies are pure shit.

  • @WILLRIDEFORLIFE

look for better headphones..allesandro is a good brand to start with.

  • @WILLRIDEFORLIFE I dont think amplifying a poor signal into some poor headphones will help with anything.

  • @WILLRIDEFORLIFE Yea thats a horrible setup Ipones aren't great music players and skull candy headphones are just a scam. Trust me the first time you put on sennheisers you'll never go back.

  • sorry if you already answered this...i looked and didnt see anything but do 32Ω headphones (sennheiser hd 448) need/would benifit from this amp?

  • even if your headphones dont benifit the battery life of your player will. and i believe that the headphones that come with iPods are infact 32Ω so the sennheiser hd 448s probably would work, perhaps not to their full capacity but they would run.

  • i got the sennheiser hd 595 and do you maybe know if they would benefit from the fiio e5

    thanks

  • For the second time, READ COMMENTS BELOW.

In the bottom right hand corner click view all comments thing and then hit Ctrl F and type in 595.

  • If you have those big headphones that only sound good with a big stereo device and suck with ordinary mp3, or CD players they you need this because those head phones only work with amp devices that boost out sound power, mp3 players don't have enough juice and so upping the volume levels make music sound distorted so you need an amp like device like the E5 to pump that sound good and clear!

  • nice demonstration...lol portal ftw.

  • okay, should i get this or the E3?

  • That's up to you. IMO the E5 is better then the E3 in every single aspect.

  • Thinking of getting one of these, a pair of RE0 buds, and a Fiio line out cable for my iPod.

  • i got the sennheiser hd-595... would fiio e5 go well with them ??

  • Read the comments below.

  • i just stumbled upon head fi for my RE0's, great site! i didn't even think about amp construction, thanks again!

  • thanks man i just didn't know where to go parts wise, im pretty good at soldering, and my brother is an aircraft mechanic, seems like me and him will be able to put together a pretty badass amp, thank you for your help!

  • BTW, if you have some more problems or questions, the people over at head-fi(dot)org can help you. Check out the DIY fourm if you want some info on amp construction. (This does NOT mean I don't want to answer your questions, feel free to still ask!)

  • yes i can

  • Then you could make a JDS Labs CMoyBB for around $50 or you could make a, cheaper but a little harder, regular CMoy using the Tangent guide.

Then there is AMB Mini3. Kits for that go for $88 IIRC, but IMO you get more out of just getting the BOM and pick and gather the parts your self; but that is up to you. It also requires you to be capable of SMD soldering.

  • thank you sir! if you would recommend another portable headphone amp for lets say a $80 budget(if one exists) what would it be?

  • Can you solder?

  • how would these sound on my scull candies?? lol jkjk

i ordered this with my RE0's and ill also be using it to drive my hd 280's, i figure for 20 bucks its worth the saved battery life, let alone the increased audio quality

  • @TheCakeWasALie

how would these sound on my scull candies? lol jk jk

i just ordered this with my new RE0's, i hope i notice a difference, ill also be using it to drive my senn hd 280's. i figure the saved battery life is worth the 20 bucks let alone better sound quality

  • @shaundiedrinksdew The E5 does work well with the RE0 as a starting amp, the bass boost really helps. The E5 does chop off some of the highs and you do lose a little bit of detail, but IMO it's worth it.

  • very good video

  • i have cowon s9 + fiio e5+audio-technica ath em 700 sounds good

  • i have a pair of sennheiser pxc 350 noise cancelin headphones would this product make them sound better? would it even work with them?

  • You want a more powerful amp then the E5 to power those. It will work with those. I can't tell you if it will sound better to you, that up to you.

  • hey, i just bought the HD 600's. I wanted to know if i need an amp for those. I dont really understand, 300 ohms at 97db. Does this mean i need an amp?? THANKS...

  • Yes, you definitely need and amp for those. Look into getting a powerful desktop amp.

  • do u know if i need an amp for the hd-25 ii, 120 db, 70 ohms?

  • Depending on your source, it would work without an amp. But from what I read the HD25 benefit greatly from an amp.

  • Nice video, it's a straight forward video without the bullcrap. I have a question though. Will i hear the hiss noticeably with 32Ohm?

  • My rule of thumb says no, but another deciding factor is how sensitive the phones are.

    What headphones are they?

  • Razer Carcharias

  • @oXoAeternooXo You'll be fine.

  • Oh ok. Thanks =] The audio coming out of my tv isn't hard enough, so this was one of the cheapest amps I could find.

  • how about me..sennheiser HD 595??

  • Yeah, the FiiO will work with those too, but you may want to upgrade to a higher power amp though.

  • oh! really. i just got the FiiO, so do u have any other amps around the same price range, or a little higher u could recommend me. please, thanks man!!

  • Around the same price as a FiiO? FiiO makes the most "budget friendly," anos I know of. The next level I would assume is a CMoy

Check These links out and do some "Googlein."

  • Great video. I've got some Klipsch IEMs that are very sensitive (18 ohm). When I run them off my iPhone on the lowest volume, they're still too loud. Would the E5 allow me to play my music at a lower volume? Or am I better off with some sort of attenuator?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • I think you're better off with a high-quality attenuator or impedance adapter.

  • Would adding something like this reduce the sound quality?

  • Possibly with a crappy attenuator. I'm not sure about the impedance adapter. All phones react differently.

  • I ordered that item. I got it today. I got special niose canceling head set. its got a amp inside the head set. a strong one. compair between the two. E5 Amp stinks.

it did not drive my head set with the set set's amp turned off.. the battery can be charged many times however the battery is not replaceable. the batterey is no longer usable. E5 is dead and the E3 did not no anything. Both items are worth nothing.

  • nobody gives a shit about your headphones.

nobody gives a shit that these E5 batteries are non replaceable, think of how many batteries you'd buy without the lithium rechargeable.

lastly, your full of shit you haven't tried these on medium sized cans that could use more juice but never required a built in amp.

    your worth nothing.

  • Excellent vid, and thanks for sharing! How high should the volume setting be on your iPOD (or other device) when hooked up to the E5? Thanks!

  • 65% - 85%. Then turn the volume down/up on the E5. The E5 is your new volume control.

  • In a rush?

  • I was a little; it was to keep the video under five minutes.

  • good, i hate videos where they point out every little detail about the dumb packaging like barcodes and useless shit..

  • My audio source : Line6 pocket pod guitar processor

  • With that thing I have no idea what is going to happen if you add a FiiO.

  • Great review, cheers. My audio source : 150-600 ohm. My headphone akg k240s (55 ohm). Especially at low volumes, I cant hear highs. And lows are very bad. (at low volumes). Can fiio e5 solve this problem?

  • What is your source?

  • Say what...???.... Not a clue as to how well it does or does not work? Or how it compares to the E3?

  • Im looking to purchase a Line out Dock for my itouch because the jack is messed up... i want to buy this amp... is this a good alternative to the 3.5 mm jack on the ipods? Or should i just my ipod for repairs?

    Thanks!

  • Depending on you phones, the FiiO E5 with a LOD will be much better then any old ipod jack.

  • Thanks! will be getting one of these then!

  • Hmm what is that LCD screen?

  • Again, What?

  • That's a Cowon D2

  • iclip copy

  • What is an "iclip?"

  • lol i thing he means ipod shuffle

  • Hey! Those are my Denon headphones and my Cowon D2+ player! ;-)

  • The combo works fantastic, by the way...

  • Yep. I agree (I have the Cowon D2 and Denon AH-C551). :)

The only small negative on this setup is that you can hear some slight hiss (in those parts of the song where the volume is lower, or stops for a sec).

The FiiO E5 on this setup will add more hiss for sure (easily avoidable adding an impedance adapter).

  • hi, i have a pair of yuin pk1, its Impedance is 150ohms. it sounds horrible at times and a little thin, will this amp do the trick?

  • i just ordered one of these, my only worry is im going to be using shure se530 ( 119db/mw, 36ohm ) and im worried the hiss may be really bad due to sensitivity, however what im really looking for is a bit of kick in the bass department because the cowon D2 im using seems to get shy below 30hz, will the E5 give me marked improvements in the low end quantity and quality?

i can live with hiss because i have 2 impedance adapters, so this can be sorted i suppose.

  • sooo r these just for buds or will these help cans too cause i just bought an Audio Technica ATH-M50 for my iphone and i was wondering if this will make any difference, will it?

  • Yeah, it should help the SQ a bit because the iphone doesn't have very good SQ to begin with.

  • but will it be worth it because i heard that this leads to some buzz

  • Hiss? Yeah, the E5 does hiss quite a bit(not as bad as the E3), but if you increase the resistance on you headphones via impedance adapter, the should go away. Also, the hiss isn't very noticeable when you have music playing, but that also depends on the gene of music you listen to. So if you can put up with the hiss, I think it's worth it. If you think differently it wouldn't be much of a loss because it only cost you $20!

  • you wouldn't notice any hiss with M50s, only when charging will there be any 'floor noise'

  • yes, yes I am and I've looked at sennheiser since i have read so many positive reviews on them, I'm willing to invest about 400 on them

  • What model are they?

  • thanx so much for info, in your opinion what is your opinion on sennheiser headphones? I've been thinking about getting some but i dont know which one i should pick, looking for one with exaggerated ear cups that can cover my entire ear with monstrous sound.

  • So you are looking for some circumaural headphones?(Google for pics) Which headphones you should get depends on the sound signature your looking for and how much money you have.

  • yeah i see, thats why ive been wanting an amp for the volume control, so can the e5 handle my sony mdr v700?

  • Should be able to, 24Ohm isn't very hard to drive.

  • almost forgot to also ask, in hooking it to my xbox/tv will I be able to listen to my audio while the volume in my television is zero? or will there always have to be some volume on my tv for audio to go through?

  • Yes, you can leave your TV on zero. Also, you won't need an amp, but you MAY want one because there is a volume control on it.

  • im new to this my question is this,

im trying to setup my xbox 360 on my television so that i can listen to my game audio on my sony mdr v700 headphones without waking my roommates at 3 in the morning when i want to blast my audio to full gear. I have read on forums that I need a headphone amplifier to do that, I would have to connect y-splitters to a headphone amp and then connect my headphones. Will this amp (e5) be a good amp to do this, or will I need something more expensive and higher end?

  • What are you using to connect your Xbox to your TV? If you are using the RCA connection you just need an RCA to 3.5mm(1/8) jack. When you have that part, instead of plugging the Red and White connection to the TV plug it into the adapter. Then plug your headphones into the adapter. Voila, sound through your headphones.

  • What's the avg. battery life on this amp?

I'm currently using a Plantronics .Audio 650 headset and the USB port that came with it went haywire. I mainly listen to LOUD music and play some games on my PC, and I'm looking into a new sound card as well (HT OMEGA Claro Halo).

Will it be able to properly handle a pair of Sennheiser HD650's as well? I understand they require a bit of power of 300 Ohms.

Sorry for bombarding with questions, as I'm QUITE new to the audiophile world.

    Thanks in advance!

  • I'm not sure. I use my E5 5 days a week for 1hr at max volume with bass boost on. Then I recharge it at the end of the week. My IEM's are about 16Ohm.

If you are using you headphones with a computer just leave it plugged into the computer.

I would not trust the E5 to power HD650s'. Better off going with a full sized amp. Like one from Woo.

If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask.

  • is it plastic?

  • The main body and clip are metal. The top part where the controls are, are plastic, same goes for the bottom. In other words, the black parts are metal and the white parts are plastic.

  • does it work with nintendo ds lite? as we all know that the output of ds lite is poor..

  • It would, but the DS's SQ isn't very good. What headphones are you using?

  • Does it just amplify the sound or does it like actually help make the sound a bit better?

  • Both, but it can only do so much if the source already sounds bad. Also could work in reverse, if you source already sounds really good it isn't going to do much other then make it louder.

  • Ah, nice unboxing. I was quite interested if it came with a jack to jack lead lol. I'm quite interested in buying this, and maybe a LOD so I can hook it up to my iPod touch and use my Sennheiser IE8's :)

  • hey sweet vid, I was thinking of getting one. But I gotta say, with a D2, and how souped up it already is, you're not gonna get much of a difference =].

  • Yeah, I am fully aware of that, but that is not the only reason I got it. I bought it because of the following: better battery(for the already awesome battery life), MORE BASS, cheap, and it does do something to the SQ, so it isn't that much of a loss considering it was only $20. So far the only downside of really getting the E5 is the "hiss," and extra cables I need to carry. Still a nice, cheap, amp all things considered.

  • that looks awesome but would it be able to power big headphones, specifically some Sony MDR-V150's

  • Of course, the V150s' only have 24 ohms of impedance, their not very big power hungry headphones like the Sennheiser HD650 for example. The only issue I see is you might get some hiss because the resistance(ohm) isn't high enough.

  • alright i was just wondering i don't know very much about impedance. thanks i just might get one (and some better headphones as well)

  • oh, well would it sound better? and would it work on some Audio Technica ATH-A700's? thanks i don't know too much about impedance.

  • Yeah, i'm sure it will sound better. Yes, it will work with the ATH-A700, that still only 64ohm, you only really need to worry if something isn't powerful enough when it over 100ohm. Great choice of headphone. Way better then the V150.

  • thanks, and of course the ATH-A700's are better but i tend to only use them at home so i only need a portable amp for my sony's to make them sound better, but pretty nice for $20.

  • Dude!!! I have your same setup!

I have a black Cowon D2 16 GB and the black Denon AH-C551!

I was thinking to get the FiiO E5, and since you have my exact setup (cool!), I was wondering if you can tell me if it's worth and if you can hear any audio quality improvement.

I already can hear some slight hiss with the Denon AH-C551 (16 ohm impedance) on the Cowon D2 (Cowon's fault! :P), and I was wondering what happens using the E5...does the hiss get even worse?

    Thanks for the video. :)

  • Oh, cool. Yes, the FiiO E5 is worth getting, it adds quite a bit more detail to my songs(mainly trance and electronica). Yes the hiss dose get noticealy worse, but if you make/buy a impedance adapter there will not be there. I listen to my D2 with flat EQ, 2 BBE, 1 March3Bass, 0 3D Surround, 2 Stereo Enhance, No MP Enhance, and 0 Pan with the E5, I find those setting most pleasing to my ears with the E5, but find settings that your ears like. I'm now using my C551's with Comply Foam T-400 tips.

  • Thanks for your reply Ben.

I'll get the FiiO E5 and look for an impedance adapter then. ;)

Geez...those Comply are pricey! ...but I alway hear good thinks about them, so I might get them (nice to know that they are compatible with the C551). I heard good things also of the Shure Black Foams that are even washable so they might be a better investment...I don't know.

Thanks again for your kind reply. :)

    Have a nice day!

  • Me again! :-)

What impedance adapter do you think I should get for my setup in order to eliminate the hiss produced by both the D2 and the FiiO E5?

    From ebay I can get an impedance adapter for 20 bucks and I have to choose between these: 33, 36, 68, 91, 120, 150, 200 & 300ohm.

I don't want to add too much impedance as that would mean lower battery life since I would have to higher the volume...I would like to stay close to the limit of hearing the hiss.

    (Denon AH-C551 + D2 + FiiO E5). Thanks

  • Hi, again.

I'm not quite fully sure what the impedance you need. I think I know what impedance adapter your talking about, I've seen it too. I am going to buy one at some point in the near future. The one i'm going to try is 75ohm, I'll let you how it works when I get it.

  • Awesome! Thanks for your time! :)

  • Hi.

    Me again. :P

I was wondering if you got the impedance adapter and have any news on the matter.

Thanks and have a good time!

  • Ah, its been quite some time. I'm sorry to inform you that I have sold off my C551's for the RE0 and I never really got around to getting the adapter.

    Sorry for misleading you.

  • No problem at all! :)

Just out of curiosity, how do you feel with your new Head-Direct RE0? Are they a good improvement over the C551?

P.S. I'm sorry if I'm bothering you with my questions. :)

  • They a amazing upgrade for the price, I'm extremely satisfied with them. The only real downsides I see with them are the really bad microphonics, lack of bass QUANTITY the C551's had(the QUALITY of bass on the RE0 is pretty good though), and they have a cold sounding so using them with the Cowon D2 is not Synergy. BUT, when you add the warm sounding FiiO E5 it works.

No problem, I enjoy answering questions!

  • ha nice

    looks like a shuffle kinda

  • lo man gr8 vid. all the best on headbanging loud music :D im getting one. cheers

  • unboxing without talking = not good

  • Thanks for the input, but what am I suppose to say?

  • eer. "The sounds noticable better with the e5" watch some reviews for some tips

  • How it feels, what you think it does to the sound, what could be better, how your weekend was... anything. It just makes the video at the very least more interesting and usually more informative.

  • lol, "how your weekend was," anyways, I think that is more of a review then an unboxing, which this video is meant to be.....I forgot to put the word "unboxing," is the name of the video. Crap, I knew something was wrong.

  • NVM, I'm leaving the name of the video just "FiiO E5," for a couple reasons.
