  • I saw her do this a a special guest performer with Southside johnny in Cleveland municipal stadium She KILLED IT! ON E OF THE MOST MEMORABLE SHOWS TO DATE.

  • Great and unique....even if she is not a kind of "regular beauty" she is very hot...damn it.....

  • This is interesting comparing to the Billy Joel version. I wonder how it would sound if Bruce Springsteen would cover a song like that in an 80's style.

  • What a precious sweet jewel she is.

  • Such a shame that she didn't have more of this type of good quality material to perform and record during her peak, most able years. Part of this problem was her husband Phil Spector, who blunter her creatively post-1966, and almost destroyed her personally, not to mention the financial exploitation he inflicted on her. If she had been better able to cope, her star would have shined longer and brighter.

  • Ronnie no one does a song like you, love ya!!

  • With the late great Clarence Clemons on sax!

  • She looks different...

  • In all of Rock 'n Roll, no one can sing the word "baby" like Ronnie Spector, except maybe Janis Joplin.

  • you won't find anything close to her today, cute as hell and the voice of an angel

  • shes so beautiful and I love the wink at :34

  • Ronnie Spector grew up in Spanish Harlem.

  • Ronnie continues to 'wow" us with her magical voice in 2010! This version is not only truncated but also a bit slower tempo; i still love it!! ¡ Viva Ronnie Spector siempre!

  • I saw her in concert at the Ritz in the early 1980s. I got 2 kisses from her.

  • I love the voice

  • was she from new york or jersey she has an off accent

  • I really like watching this. She is wonderful. Why she allowed herself to be corralled by that freak is beyond me. I guess that's love for ya.

  • Damn, she's really more attractive than I knew.

  • @CeddyJam Yeah this was thirty years ago. But she still has the voice

  • Meat Loaf's "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth," Alan Parsons Project's "Don't Answer Me," some of Springsteen and the E-Street Band's epic tracks and this one. Somebody's got to try doing a record with that Spector sound on occasion, although I haven't noticed any attempts recently.

  • brilliant clip. always one of the greatest singers, this is very Dion / Springsteen, fantastic !!

  • God, who sings like this today? Who CAN sing like this today? When Ronnie Spector sings, you know it's her and nobody else. There are only a few performers like that today. As a native New Yorker, it's great to see her doing this tune on Top Of The Pops. Just goes to show that a little New York goes a long way, even in London!

  • Love Ronnie! One of the best female singers ever...

  • This is utter magnificence!

  • Going to see Miss Ronnie Spector at The Riverside casino Riverside Iowa on Saturday July 10.

  • BRILLIANT POST FROM A GREAT SINGER

  • Billy Joel has said her version of "Be My Baby" was the inspiration for this song

  • Billy Joel did a good version of this in the 80's.

  • @bamatommy actually it was in the 70's wasn't it cuz i remember it in a show in 77

  • @bamatommy Nope, he wrote it. Supposedly for Ronnie Spector.

  • @bamatommy billy didn't 'do' a version !! it's his song and from the late 70's.

  • @bamatommy He wrote it and released his version in 1976.

  • man, ronnie is so hot.

  • Ronnie Spector will sing at Beachland Ballroom Cleveland, Ohio on Jan.22, 2010 and Seneca Niagara Casino Niagara Falls, new York on Jan. 24.

  • I wish Morrissey would listen to this and come back and live in the UK.

  • What a fantastic voice...thank you for the post.

I was at a Southside Johnny concert the same year this was recorded, and Ronnie came on to sing with the band. Turned a great night into an unforgettable one.

  • Whow the voice - unique and g-r-e-a-t!!!!!

  • Ronnie Spector Christmas Show Dec 4 Mohegan Sun Casino Uncasville CT & Dec 19-20 BB Kings NYC. The first ever Ronnie Spector Darlene Love A Christmas gift For You live concerts Dec 11 Parilla Pac Montgomery College Rockville MD & Dec 17 Count Basie Theatre (Benefit for the Boys & Girls Club of Monmouth County) Red Bank NJ.

  • I read her autobiography. This was the point where she was really strung up on alcohol and depression. The late seventies were a low point for her until later in the eighties when she became remarried and found herself again.

  • I've just finished reading her book "How I survived mascara, music and madness" it's interesting. D'you know what happened to the other Ronnettes?

  • one was her sister and the other her cousin

  • What a great find. I bought three 45`s when this came out. The only good song Billy Joel ever wrote.

  • She's the definition of cool. I wish I knew her when I was a kid.

  • The first ever Ronnie Spector & Darlene Love A Christmas Gift for You live shows-Dec 11 Parilla PAC Rockville MD & Dec 17 The Count Basie theatre red Bank NJ.

  • Ronnie still looks amazing

  • I always liked Nigel Olson's version better, but since I can't find a video of his, this is good.

  • I just wish this was the full version. I also wish her version of this song had been the one everyone knows. Ronnie's voice gives me chills every time I hear her sing this song. Billy Joel wrote it for her and it suits her voice perfectly. Love it.

  • Is there a released full version that you know of?

  • I remember she also performed it live on the David Essex Show around the same time - I think that was the full version, but I didn't have video facilities back then. Maybe someone else did.......?

  • Yes Sadako.. It was released as by Ronnie Spector and The E Street Band on Epic records in 77.. It's quite a rare 45.

WABC77 has it posted.. type it in the search bar

  • yes, you can find the full 45 version, also on you tube. This version here was a (London) studio version. Shorter, but not bad. Especially Ronnie....

  • Yes this is very nice.

  • such a unique great voice ........

  • This is a great live performance! Ronnie's voice is in fine form here, and the cameras did a great job of covering her facial expressions-love the wink at 0:35! Ronnie's emotive voice and stage presence are what made her legendary and that's something P. Spector can never lay claim to or take away. "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" is a great song and the BBC Orchestra takes nothing away from this performance. I've added this one to my favorites!

  • I always thought she was just a beautiful and sweet person. I hope she's doing well.

  • @sirtone31 I just saw her in Manhattan promoting her new Christmas album, she's doing great!

  • Great song! Ronnie, I'll be your fast gun anytime!

  • she's so cute in this clip!

  • +1, adorable

  • Love it, a great performance from ronnie Spector, Shame about the stupid comments from Steve Wright at the end!

  • is this available ANYWHERE on the internet?

  • I thought Billy Joel wrote this song as a tribute to Ronnie Spector.......oh hold on the caption just said that.

  • ronnies just so cool

  • Ronnie and Lauryn hill has the same singing technique

  • God bless you Ronnie... you're just the best! Can't wait to meet you at the Beatlefest at the end of March.

  • Ronnie is just the best.

  • Ronnie, love you, a true legend.

  • an oldie but a goodie, ronnie your still the best now, love ya

  • If anyone has the E Street Band backed original, plz plz plz post it... This still rocks though, but sweet lord, the original is rock n roll heaven. Props to Billy Joel for writing it.

  • even with the crappy TV arrangement, it reminds me of what a pity it is that Ronnie's version isn't more easily available...

  • The Fabulous Ronnie!!!

    love love love

  • Ronnie sings "You mean so much to me" on (I think) the album "I Don't Want to Go Home", by Southside Johnny and the Ashbury Dukes... its simply spellbinding. She is a tremendous vocalist.

  • She done good , but personally I prefer Bette Midler's version of this song :)

  • This isn't the actual record - this was re-recorded by the TV shows band. The actual record is much better.

  • met her in the record company i was working for just before she was due to go to top of the pops to record this. she was ever so nice

  • ronnie 4ever love her 2 bits she puts her soul into it. unlike billys version

  • ronnie at her best, love her too bits. you dont get no better than ronnie.

  • Gosh!! She looks amazingly young......... what a voice!

  • You can tell it's the E Street Band backing her!

  • In the Mail On Sunday, Daivd Bowie revealed that his vocal performance on "Teenage Wildlife" was an imitation of this song.(and actually it does sound the same)

  • A top singer and performer.

Mr. Joel perceived this song as a tribute to Phil Spector's Wall of Sound and, of course, Ronnie was THE perfect singer.

Dig the way she blinks her right eye at 0:35... - what a sweetie ;)

  • Suspenders?

  • I love this song and Ronnie's version so much better than Billy's.

  • she winked at me!

  • She's so skinny here. Like always, she sounds great!

  • Someone in the late sixties should of had serios words with Phil Spector for preventing this most unique person from recording and performing. Everything about her is interesting. Really is a bright light. Ta for uploading this.

  • Holy smokes. Rare stuff!

  • i remember ronnie in this era she's so hot rock n roll's godess

  • Great! Check out Ronnie's performance of this song from 2002 in the live concert I uploaded.

  • Ronnie is a star, but would have been a massive star, in the same league as Cher etc,if Phil Spector had not been so possesive with her!Check out her CD, Last of the Rock Stars, superb!!!!!

  • To bad Ronnie didn´t get more chances to do songs like this in the 70s and 80s
