Not so ironic that the man in this commercial (Kris Kyer) playing Caracatus Potts will be playing Caracatus Potts in the "C. C. B. B." musical next month in Simi Valley, Ca!
We have a "road tax" here in Massachusetts also, but it's called "excise tax" and it's based on the value of your car. It's 25.00 per thousand dollars of value so a car valued at 20k would be 500.00. That's a check we have to give to Mass every March just for owning a car; we get nothing in return...it's a luxury tax when owning a car is no longer a luxury. It sucks!
@patrikthegreat It's an annual per-unit tax levied against automobiles. I live in Pennsylvania, and there isn't a road tax per se. There is a high fuel tax, though.
So, if a car could actually fly, would there be an air tax?
I don't get it: how does this tax work in the UK? Frequency of use of one's car?
I am preparing to live like I did pre-1990: without a car. It will be hard (I am 10 km from nearest stores), but to reduce my carbon footprint (I've been vegan for 30+ years) and to prepare for economic collapse due to unextractable oil, I may have to ride an adult tricycle.
@Abbeysums - When Fascism Comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross. - Sinclair Lewis. At the start, in only looks like socialism, but America is the new fourth reich.
@puffrooster Fascism comes with a RED flag and a clenched fist, but the American flag and cross have LIBERTY crowned upon their brow. And Sinclair Lewis is just a dead guy.
@puffrooster Fascism comes with a RED flag and a clenched fist, but the American flag and cross have LIBERTY crowned upon their brow. Sinclair Lewis is just a dead guy.
@Abbeysums - That is surely possible in the United States. I don't really care what happens in America but I watch the Daily Show on occasion and it seems that bankers, politicians, wall street, CNN, FOX, and a large list of many other people have a very low opinion of teachers and education in America. Eventually your country is gonna farm that industry out as well. Five years from now all your teachers will be Chinese, Mexican's and Spiks!
@puffrooster Anyone who gets their NEWS from The Daily Show is a real loser. And the future leaders of America will probably be HOMESCHOOLed thanks to the teaching profession being unionized. And those HOMESCHOOLed will be fine leaders indeed.
@Abbeysums - Nope. You know that the biggest union subscribers in the USA are civic employess, right? Since there is now almost no manufacturing left in America, due in part to the unions and the extremely high corporate taxes, the unions needed somewhere to collect (their) dues. In order for (them) [govn't] to KEEP (their) salary at what it is, they have to take it from someplace else and those are the teachers. The USA is broke and your alderman isn't gonna give up his/her BMW for education.
The DVLA and the Police use the licence plate to check the database. The database indicates if a vehicle is TAXed (amount is variable based on emissions, engine size etc), MOTed (annual road worthy test), has insurance (a legal requirement) or is stolen.
Can someone from the UK explain what a road tax is? If you have a license plate doesn't that mean you paid your fees to use the roads? So is this commercial supposed to make people pre pay for a road tax on special roads. Help out a stupid yank. In the meantime I'll do some research on this.
@vampov Road tax is something we have to pay every year to allow us to drive on the roads. If we don't pay it, then we will get in big trouble with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Association. Hope that helps :D
The irony is hysterical. The most amusing thing about this commercial is that the idiots who made it are too stupidly insensitive to understand that they have cast "their side" unambiguously in the role of the villains. Morons. If there must be tyrants may they all be so obviously inept.
@deepfriedsammich they are aware they are the bad guys and revel in it because they know ppl have to pay. cunts. steal as much as you can from the government i say. the bastards.
@deepfriedsammich Well no, I don't think so. I see it as they've flipped it around so the 'Good guys' were caught doing wrong and now they're the bad guys. It's just a bit of humour, and it works. But that's just me. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the people who made it are morons, idiots and stupidly insensitive. It's just an ad afterall.
@deepfriedsammich I don't live in England and don't deal with the same road tax rules but your observations of this advert are spot-on. It was very funny because Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang ALWAYS gets out of a bad situation. After the commercial fade-out, it wouldn't surprise me if a part of the car's frame spontaneously ejected itself, thus freeing the family and car from those dastardly road-tax goons.
most authorities are so easy to violate, put it this way the government are the biggest crooks, they steal from an entire nation, fancy the dvla not noticing a 25 year old tax free car, thats why i like ripping them off tee hee... hats off to all tax dodgers and tax evaders you are the clever ones....if you dont cut the governments throat they sure as hell wont hesitate in cutting yours !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bloody hell, and I wanted to move there once upon a time. No way in hell I'll do anything more than visit now. Your lot are getting screwed worse than we are.
I understand that the tax camera vehicle is a Ford Model T. Mind you, if anybody wanted to concentrate on historical accuracies, the early brass radiator version would be better.
road tax water tax food tax cloths tax candy tax beer tax cigarette tax income tax umm.. how come if i went up to someone sitting on a seat in a train or bus and said hey i need... umm.. your space tax because you are in my space... and if they said no I demanded it.. I would go to jail.. but yet these other people can do it to me??? Well I declare people pay me a tax every time someone trys to make me pay them a tax... Lets get together and enforce this new tax law
@orangie84 Haha if you start offering the same services as the government then maybe you would have a case for taxing people. The government gives you the services of roads, education etc. You pay companies for their services, like the supermarkets for food. That my friend is why we have tax - the government can't fund all of these things with no money.
He's a great look alike, still they could have had a voice actor do the Dick Van Dyke voice, in the tape he has to twist his face to get to something that is still not anywhere close to Dick's voice. But he really does look like Dick Van Dyke!
Don't know - but I think Civil Aviation Authority might throw the book at the driver for having neither a Certificate of Airworthiness nor a pilot's licence.
HA HA HA!! I am in the States and it reminds me of the red light violation tickets we get here where a camera takes a pic of your license plate and they mail you the ticket for running a red light. It is so wrong but this is funny.
Ok... So What exactly is a "Road Tax" I'm sure there's something similar here in the US, but we don't call it that. Is it like property tax or something? Are you refering to parking tickets?

I just found the Kris Kyer audition for this commercial -- LOL, can see why they chose him for this part!!! However, that song, now I can't get it out of my head!
no, they used the car from the film, flew it two Australia and shot this commercial 4 years ago to make it look exactly like the film from the 1960's!
Thanks, That is totally interesting. They did a awesome job on the commercial. It looked just like a scene form the movie. Even the characters looked close. I always loved that car, Herbie is cool too.
I discovered other work by the actor playing in this commercial! Search KRIS KYER on Youtube. You can see his actual audition for this ad as well as many other ads he has been in!!
Great video. Sadly under Gordon Brown's new stealth tax proposals, Chitty can expect a large rise in road tax, applied retrospectively to older cars. Still, it's good to know they won't waste the money repairing pot-holes. They'll build more speed humps instead!

I just found the Kris Kyer audition for this commercial -- LOL, can see why they chose him for this part!!! However, that song, now I can't get it out of my head!

Kris Kyer is my cousin. His real name is Kristopher Antekeier. He was also the ringmaster of Barnum and Baily Circus for a couple years.

Is it an old commercial? Like from when the movie was made?
Kagaines 3 years ago
no, they used the car from the film, flew it two Australia and shot this commercial 4 years ago to make it look exactly like the film from the 1960's!

Thanks, That is totally interesting. They did a awesome job on the commercial. It looked just like a scene form the movie. Even the characters looked close. I always loved that car, Herbie is cool too.

I discovered other work by the actor playing in this commercial! Search KRIS KYER on Youtube. You can see his actual audition for this ad as well as many other ads he has been in!!

nice commercial. i think the road tax camera and car have a nice retro design.^^

Great video. Sadly under Gordon Brown's new stealth tax proposals, Chitty can expect a large rise in road tax, applied retrospectively to older cars. Still, it's good to know they won't waste the money repairing pot-holes. They'll build more speed humps instead!
