Jon Lord is my all time favourite player. But no-one should underestimate Don Airey, the guy is truly great. In my opinion, the only one who could replace the Lord.
Airey is technically better than Lord, but music isn't only technique. Lord is a pioneer of the rock keyboards, he can be compared only with Rick Wakeman, or Keith Emerson, or Tony Banks, musicians of his generation. Airey is a musician of the next generation. Without Lord and his works of pioneering, the style of Airey never can be developed. Anyway, Lord is a classical and rock composer, not Airey.
Airey is very superior than Lord. Im talking about both things: techiniques and influence to rock history. He played with some of the greatest rock names.. rainbow, whitesnake, ozzy (creating mr.crowley theme), and many otheeeeers.
The point is, Jon Lord became a legend with his performance, and tequiniques. Take his place in Deep Purple is an impossible mission, just as Paul Rodgers with QUEEN, besides he has much more history than Freddie.
@TMUSICIAN Right, because clearly, Mr. Crowley is pure gold compared to rubbish like Highway Star, Burn, Smoke on the Water, Child in Time, Lazy, Speed King, etc. Now if Lord, like Airey, ever written anything memorable, perhaps a couple of songs that would get played continually, change the face of rock music forever and inspire thousands of kids to pick up keyboards, it would have been a different matter altogether.
@TMUSICIAN - Jon Lord personally approved of Don Airey as the next man in Deep Purple and since he played with Rainbow and Whitesnake which has quite much to do with Deep Purple I feel it was a natural choice. The word "technique" is overused on the internet. I actually seen a documentary where one person says Ritchie Blackmore had superier technique and in the next minute another says he had average technique. I can't who has better, Lord or Airey, but that don't matter to me. Both are great!
Airey's skills are great , he's a great organ/keyboard player... But my master is Lord..
You should not listen to this to compare them.... Cut Runs Deep for Airey and Highway Star (made in Japan version) for Lord....
I just love Lord.... My techniques of playing the keyboard are based on his playstyle, on my profile u can find myspace address where i've put my prog/rock songs with Organ, and you can say if I'm Airey or Lord peon... Long live to both, but Jon Lord is the best organ in rock player
Jon Lord no.1!? Hardly. Have you seen the concert in California where Emerson follows him? A gulf in class. I like Lord though. He offers his own unique style but I think the earlier poster was right. Rod Argent is a superb talent too.
A friend of mine has played with both Jon and Don and he has said that Jon is easily in a class of his own and way beyond Don. He said Don is a good player but can't come close to matching Jon's abilities: Don struggled to play some material whereas Jon doesn't.
2 keyboard legends on the same stage. Amazing! Thank you for sharing! Any true Deep Purple fan knows that Don is amazing. Lord was and still is brilliant and is missed, but Don is doing one hell of a job, so stop the flaming.
Only one who repeats those same boring phrases is you. You have major lack to understand that playing keyboards is not just stupid classical "well educated" notes in the paper. Jon Lord is number one. Just get over it.
Only die hard fans and non musicians like you can´t see that JL did not develop since the early 70s - for whatever reason. And JL = No.1? ...best joke on youtube ....
Here you can hear that Airey is far ahead - as is Emerson, Argent, Wakeman, Rudess and many others.
@anonymusum You told it yourself. I can't see it because I hear that Jon is the number one. I have learned everything in music with my ears since I was kid and that makes the huge difference. You have no ears (as most classical players don't) to hear the nuances between players, just only the mechanical sequence in paper. In reality, you have major lack to understand the whole idea of music. As Sycsa told, get over your frustration.
@anonymusum C'm on. Airey is technically far better than Lord, but not nearly as creative and soulful. From the other ones you've mentioned - Have you heard DT's cover of Made in Japan? I could easily listen to Lord and Blackmore's solo on Space Truckin', but DT just didn't understand their artistic approach and turned the whole thing into a boring 20 minute jam session.
Also in the case of Yes - Can you compare Fragile keyboards to Relayer's keyboards - Wakeman=technique, Moraz=jazzy insanity.
Yeah this composition was called "Fairground Fantasy", and it was recorded in a project called "Wind in the Willows - A Rock Concert", because it was concert for the film Wind in ...
I personally don't like Don Airey, but they did a interesting job on this one.

What's the type of keyboard Jon Lord's playing?
dbyo88 9 months ago
@dbyo88 C3 Hammond Organ with Leslie
Marius1988Roma 8 months ago
@dbyo88 This is not a C3 but a 1970's Hammond B-3 which I assume is connected to a 147 Leslie judging by the growl and raw sound the organ produce.
