@dumbhonkie if you carry properly the muzzle will never point at your head in American carry style. And carrying it muzzle down leaves it open to mud or dirt if you were to kneel and the barrel sticks into the ground.
You get the gun faster outta tha american carry, if you take the stock of your hand you normaly got on your pistol grip and swing the stock foreward below your arm to your shoulder... Thats what a lot of hunters do, when the suddenly have to get ready, but of course its critical, becauese the muzzle points on the stuff behind you for a short moment...
the way i was learned to carry a semi auto shotgun is with the barrel pointing at the floor with the stock on you shoulder so you can see if the breach is empty
You must know by now but for anyone whom may have the same question... You know what a saddle is, correct? It goes over the top and rests on top. A side saddle is a partial saddle that mounts on the side since it can't be hung.

I have to move the sling to shoulder the weapon though, it would be better with a 3-point sling. Totally agree on the politically correct thing, the fact that our president-elect doesn't even know what the 2nd amendment is for makes me sick.
Which one do you have? I have a 1300 Black Shadow, which seems to have been eclipsed by it's more popular counter part, the Defender. I've been thinking of modifying it for a more tactical/defensive role when I get home from college. Maybe you could give me a few recommendations?

I carry my Hans Vang-made Remington 870 Police Magnum across my chest so it's right where I need it all the time and I can throw it to my back to draw my sidearm in a heartbeat.
I was always taught to carry with the muzzle pointing down. My dad would say, "which would you rather blow off, your foot or your head?" lol!

I read Coopers book to it rocks.
As far as shotguns go I prefer the Winchester 1300 to the remminton 870. The ergonomics are better by far.

If your 870 is not locking up, you should have a gunsmith or Remington armorer take a look at it.

My 870 does that, but only when its not cocked. I think its because the slide is wood and a bit heavy.
