  • Hi

  • Excellence works!

  • I LOVE THIS GUY! they should make a flm about him and his relationship with the animals

  • the catfish are not organically grown if hes feeding them the highly processed store bought bread LOL :)

And I know I routinely farm in a cheap blue suit and penny loafers. LOL :) OK whatever

  • Vern is an inspiration

  • Scrawberries?

  • Wonderful video... it's so beautiful what he's doing for children, educating them about farming & helping to reconnect them with nature...

  • This was a great video

  • myspacedotcom / bellandsons

  • Hey! The Rural Hall Grill is awesome! I prefer their burgers, though.

  • a scrawberry field

  • mmmmmm scrawberries

  • Vern and Joes is more in the town of Germanton which is right outside of Rural Hall. I live in Rural Hall and there's not really much here but a bad hot dog place and a depot for the Yadkin Yalley Railroad. Thank you thought for making good videos about North Carolina. :)

A good place to visit in Rural Hall is the Nazareth Lutheran Church on Hwy. 65. There are Confederate graves in the church graveyard and a Revolutionary war Lt.Colonel Anthony Bitting whose land was once the entire town.

  • That's a nice idea and a great man.

  • i live in kernersville and hope you enjoyed your stay. :)

  • This is no vegetable garden; this is a real farm. It's hard work, but if you you love food that much, it makes sense. I tried growing my own food this year and screwed up big time. I do have some nice cucumbers to show for it though.

Next year I'm planting a big vegetable garden again, but I have it planned better.

  • Getting Dan Traveling withdrawals here !!

  • Hey Scott, how is your summer going?

We are editing one about the French and Indian War here in the Carolinas. Should be up within a few days.

    Thanks for the push

  • Its been ok here -- a few days of 90+ heat but today has been rather nice. How has yours been ?

Can't wait for the video -- will be looking forward to it :)

  • This is a great video. Thanks for making it. I'm really interested in growing my own food and building my own place. Working towards that end now. Hope to be able to stay away from town for months at a time.

  • That is an interesting video. Well put together. Very proffessional. Kevin

  • dude, how do you afford to travel with the gas now?

  • No kidding, we haven't been anywhere in a bit, but the key is Jan's 97 Toyota Rav 4

    Great Gas Mileage!

  • I like this video.

  • That goose loves his Wonder Bread!

  • Vegetarian is more efficient. 'Permaculture' is a great idea. Lawns are evil. Too many people in world not enough trees

  • This guy has a point. With the subprime crisis eating up the economy and ethanol fuel driving up corn prices, growing your own food is a good idea.

This summer I'm growing corn, melons, tomatoes and cucumbers in the yard. I'm going to grow the tomatoes upside down and hanging from posts to save space.

  • i like goats :D

  • Lesson #1, kids - Use farmland to grow crops for food, not for ethanol. This way, mommy and daddy don't have to pay through the nose for a box of cereal, and food pantries don't have to run nearly empty.

  • True. But the mash that's left after fermentation is protein-rich and can be fed to cattle. Also, if the farmers are getting more money for their corn, we can end the farm subsidies.

  • Sick of Hillary's lies and smears-- Visit Liesofthe90s>>>

  • Very cool!

  • great man, great vision

  • Great stuff.

  • What a good idea to teach kids where food realy comes from.

  • What a great guy! People like this is what makes America great! Good job sir. I always enjoy your videos. Keep on!

  • What a lot of views, comments and a feature! Good on you Dan, you deserve it!:)

  • CONGRATS on getting FEATURED Dan ..

Looking forward to the upcoming DVD ..

i got your email and i'll get a reply out to you by the morning at the latest .. keep up the great work ..

    your friend jeff

    Jeff Williams / guitarist

  • Jeff, Our famous friend from Charlotte!

Thank You, I sent another yousendit file in case the other expired. I know people from the coal fields will absolutely LOVE your song!

Hope you can come to the premier. (well more of a free community viewing, perhaps in August)? If not, lets at least get some copies of your cd to sell?

  • Onta mate

  • I want lessons.

  • Hi Inky,

what kind of lessons would you like?

  • Somehow if I plant a seed it might grow or it might not. I mean my crop is never what I would like it to be.

  • PEACE and LOVE!

  • Watch this video. "Pt 1/5 Lest We Forget" the real horrors of slavery

Watch this video. "Pt 1/5 Lest We Forget" the real horrors of slavery

  • I grew up in Charleston, RI where all of RI's farms remain, see a bit of my child hood here lol

  • This man is wonderful!!!!!

  • thanks for you sir...GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!!!!!!

  • FANTASTIC MAN>>>>we need more people like him to teach kids where food comes from....most of our american kids have no clue where food comes from, much less how to farm. Why not start a grassroots movement to educated our youth about self sufficiency? Most of us are to young to remember the "Victory Gardens" of the 1940's when most people HAD to have a garden in order to eat. The Great Depression?

My grandmother and grandfater ate VERY WELL during this time BECAUSE THEY HAD A GARDEN.

    SO LEARN!!

  • Funny as he may be,as redneck as you think us Carolinians are,the fact remains, that with our knowledge of how to live off the land we will survive longer than those of you laughing.the jokes on "ya'll".lmfao at u.

  • just playing

  • whatsup

  • Organic catfish..? They're eating that toxic processed refined fortified garbage the govt allows the food manufactures to call white bread. That ruins if for the fish being allowed to carry the organic label.

    Great story and vid.

  • .. the south is so far behind everyone else

  • you say that like its a bad thing! I moved to the west coast from georgia and after 6 years...... Georgia is looking better and better

  • You fool! There's lots of good about the South. A lot of my family is from the south.

  • jackass

  • And we are so far ahead in so many more things... get a grip

  • What an adorable guy! :)

  • Too bad we don't have several more Verns in this world. Simple man with a simple plan.

  • a simple plan that will yield large solutions.

  • so beautiful that there is no racist comments on such a nice vid.thanks everybody

  • that was great!!! best thin so far that i have seen in here

  • This guy is awesome!

  • fancy dan is the man

  • check out my vids!

  • his all excited about his water mellow field lol

  • What a caring, humble, down to earth man. Keep doin what you're doin and God Bless.

  • There is a lack of farmers right now because farmers don't make money.

  • No lie, my wife teaches 4th graders and they take them to a farm during the year to show the kids where their food comes from. Without fail she has kids that honestly think that their food comes originally from the grocery. I applaud Vern for his efforts and Dan for bring him (and Rural Hall and Kernersville) to YouTube.

  • *bringing*

  • Very nice, Vern. I hope your book sells well, and thanks for bringing this to YT, Dan.

I'd much rather buy a book for my children from a man like Vern than Madonna or some other over-rated celeb.

  • I strongly agree with you!

  • Thankyou Dan for finding Vern and his farm and wonderful story. My 26 yr old son loves to plant things right in town; It amazes me how people can find Neg. to say about such a wonderful place you found interesting and to share with us. I am a new Computer junky and you made my NITE. God Bless.NLR Amen to l987whipper.

  • Cute, BUT, organtic cat fish that eat AIR bread full of preservatives?

  • I know...that made me lol. Oh, well, he's a simple country man...perhaps his white bread is preservative-free rice or potato bread. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. ;)

  • Vern is a true inspiration. Many thanks for making this video.

  • Vern would look more like a farmer if he'd wear his farmer clothes. I'll bet he dressed up in a suit for filming.

  • I'd say so too, it would have been better to have dressed in work clothes

  • You might lose the bet...if you noticed his Lapelle it had a cross on it so I bet you 5 that he just returned from church.

  • Hipnote, you are right! He met us as soon as he got out of church that Sunday afternoon. We filmed it at two separate times, notice later he changed into overalls, we were just happy he had time to meet with us at all!

  • This is the first thing that's made me smile all day!! Thank you Vern!

  • Now this is someone who isnt affected by the changing times, his life appears simple and uncomplicated, I think we'd all be better off with a little of his attitude in us.

  • wats the name of the song that plays at 0:40? reply or message me plz

  • Now that was a beautiful message!

  • Now there's a nice fella making the most of his potential. I love it! I hope Vern's dream comes true.

Thanks for the post dmccoig, it brought a big smile for a change!

  • Oh no he didnt =O

  • Great story! The world is going to need more people like Vern. Imagine that kid only eating what his parents teach him - that food comes from a drive through, what a crappy diet. Kids don't even know the basics of humanity anymore, because their parents aren't even teaching them.

  • well that is true...it is like the saying..."catch a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach him how to fish and feed him for a life..." ok so maby that isnt exactly right but you get the main idea

  • hah all i got out of the first half was watermelons...

  • I watched this installment of DanTraveling several weeks ago. Loved it. Glad to see Yahoo is recognizing some of the producer/directors who are trying to raise the 'content bar' here on Youtube.

After all, the viral pull that YouTube was originally famous for, get's boring before too long. Ultimately masses still want to see impressive/well shot/well edited/content . . . . . . . . .the kind of things they CAN'T produce themselves.

Nice Job Dan. Can I still tell people I know you? ha ha

  • It's really great to see this video featured on you tube. Great job guys!

  • I am a true believer of being totally self sufficient. Great video.

  • I'm happy he has a desire to help educate on self sufficiency. However, there is nothing organic about chlorine bleeched bread from Wonder. However, I do appreciate what he is trying to say... Its well taken, eat local, act local, think global. I have been composting and feeding 6 families locally for the past 3 years, with little effort after spending 1-2 weeks of time getting all things set up on about 1000 square feet of property. Take and run with his ideas.

  • Vern's got the joy of farming. I love farming too, not for commercial gains but for my own food and enjoyment like this.

  • Great vid.

Vern seems like he's a great man

  • Beautiful!

  • Oh my gosh! I'm so glad to see Mr. Vern featured on youtube. My son has an autographed copy of "Puffy the watermelon". My son's grandfather met Mr. Vern back in 2004. My son was just born and Mr. Vern stopped by "Pa-pa's" place of employment selling his wonderful books. I have read that book to my son for the 4 years and it's definitely one of his top books! God bless Mr. Vern!

  • And you obviously don't know how to write.

  • bring your racism somewhere else gebala4

  • u know what i dont know why u mound earth out because water drains off them i will ask my lecturer tomoz lol

  • Thank you for telling this farmer's story. He has an awesome mission--teaching our children about farming and their Earth is what will make future generations flourish!

  • I could as well grow my weed on the balkony ..... :)

  • Don't make a Federal case out of it. RP 2008!!

  • its about time to see something worth watching im 37 and luv this stuff

  • A modern day HERO.

  • This video had my almost three year old enthralled. It's on my "Awesome Stuff to Share with Family" list. This is great.

  • ..shoot...I thought he was going to plant something good...

  • Pretty cool, teaching people to grow their own food is a good idea. Nice video.

  • lol fancy dan

  • Great Point Vern-You are a smart man. Seedless foods are a vice that the govt uses to gain monopoly on the food sources. Don't eat the seeds-plant them, and save them to give to others. Ass for the joke on waermelons-there is none because all people love them if that's a food that they care for.

  • "Homegrown" in North Carolina

  • There is a ROLE MODEL! He seems to be a good man.

  • Haha, Bigger redneck.

  • Haha, Rednecks.

  • fancy dan!!!!hahaha

  • A good story!

He reminds me of the fellow who wrote 'how to make $100,000 off twenty acres'. (a really good book).

Educating the kids is important. So many people have lost touch with the food production cycle.

  • Good film. I wish more of us could be like this farmer. Good folk.

  • HEHE water melons

  • Kudos to food growing! Everyone should know how to do this. Today's education does not teach growing food which is the base for freedom. Without growing your own food, we're always slaves. So, thanks so much...

However, what about meet eating? Are you going to teach them where meat comes from? Are you going to teach them how to slay them as well?

    Thanks.

  • thanks for helping kids.I lived in W-S NC. for 10 years.Love Your State.....

  • Yeah it's nice to show them such things. I live over in Raleigh in the downtown area. I know nothing about growing my own food. But I'm only 17 so yeah.

  • Good luck sir NICE!!!!!

  • Check ou my vidz der savage!!

  • Hats off to you "Watermelon Man"!

It's people like you who will help our grand kids and great grand kids remember how to be self sufficent even if it's on a small scale. I'll get the book for sure.

    Thanks Dan!

  • i love country-life

  • Vern you are truly real.

Thanks for one of the greatest conributions to mankind.Being you! There is nothing more satisfying than eating your own food.Thank you again!

  • Truely a great story, and sounds like great people, what happened to the rest of the world? Wouldn't it be nice if we all could be a little like Vern? Keep up the great work, and keep planting those seeds !!!!!Amen
