cool!! i am playing the e.bass and want to buy one of these things but i am not really soon if i can reach a satisfying level soon... can some1 tell me by their own experience if they had problems adapting their skill ?
@aproksenos if you start by using the Stick in a bass role it's not as difficult and many concepts can translate, and models like the NS/Stick and Stick Bass (8 strings tuned in 4ths like a regular bass) are well suited to that. For solo music it's more of a learning curve and mentally like playing piano (two hand independence is the biggest challenge, but certainly achievable with practice).
@gibbs75 yes basically, auto volume swell first then chorus/rev/delay and often other things like autowah, pitchshifter (for a thicker chorus) and EQ. I just tweak stuff until I get the desired richness of timbre.
I'm a Guitarist / Bassist and never learned playing by notes. I never really wanted because in my Opinion music finds you and you are the medium to express it...
Just experience your instrument and feel free to do what comes up in your mind, I always thought.
Sooooo.... :-)
Are you playing by notes or do you just experiment playing?
@OifelOifel While I have training in reading music (I used to take flute and piano lessons), I don't do much note reading on the Stick, almost everything is learned by ear/experimentation. But due to their complexity, some of my covers involved learning from sheet music (like the Gentle Giant and Steve Hackett).
I continue to be most impressed with this instrument! Seems I missed my calling! And the way you play it ... looks like it's such a pleasure for you, man! I'd even call it "joy"! :-)
The first part of this piece sounds almost like you're using it as a MIDI controller. There are notes on the acoustic part that sound soft when you hit them, then grow louder, then softer, like the effects of a synthesizer pad.
But I know better. Everything's live. Quite a technique you have, dude! ;-)
I'm looking forward to being able to buy one of these. Somehow there are not so many women playing the Chapman Stick and I want this since two years, but I can't afford it at the moment.
that is absolutely beautifull man.respect in the highest, i so badly want to get one of those, i'm quite confident I could pick it up being a guitarist and am learning to play andy mckee stylee music. although i can see how it is quite different from guitar. how did you come across one of these
@Tommy1The2Bat3 thanks... I got this instrument directly from the people who make them (Stick Enterprises), been aware of it for a long time (King Crimson, Tony Levin etc). It combines many of my favorite aspects of piano, guitar and bass which is why I decided to focus on it (rather than be barely competent at all those individual instruments!)
exactly my point of view, I am aware of Levin, Crimson and of course you for some time... it almost takes all the positive aspects of piano, bass and guitar and puts em together
