I used to know willy when his fingers were shorter. he started a miracle gro/cauliflower fast diet back in the late 90s. the last time i saw him was at a "weed fest" show at fitz's in houston. his fingers had grown 80% and he smelled like chlorophyll....but his chops were seriouser than serious.
@Skyuss666 YES ,reminds me of my teacher 25 yrs ago. agonizing dexterity exercises, scale patterns and modes up and down the neck. If he didnt help me learn a song a week i liked i would have quit. but it sure payed off in the long run bigtime.
Look at those monster fingers! I don't think this guy really understands how difficult it is for those of us very small hands and short fingers to do this excercise! I don't care how flexible you are, some fingers and hands are just TOO small to stretch 5 frets!
Age doesn't have much to do with it. If a person has small hands, and short fat fingers, it doesn't matter if he's 14 or 40. Unless you're made of rubber, there IS a physical limit that a person can reach with any given size hands.
using finger economy and move your thumb into a c chord position when stretching with your pinky holding a g chord shape and stretching ur pinky with stumby fingers never gonna work
ill use this streach from now on. only thing sucks is that i make it to the 12th fret at a decent speed before my hand cramps up a little. mainly because I've only been doing drop tunings, and rarely doing solos. and if i was doing a solo, it would be a one string solo :(.
Something wrong(at least theoretically) and confusing for beginners: He mentions going down the freatboard and down the neck, but he is actually pointing going UP the fretboard and DOWN the neck.
everyone should try it on an acoustic first before going to electric...a while back i started doing these exercises on electric and i thought i was doing alright as far as improving but then i picked up an acoustic and i was slow and messing up like hell...
i think electric is better for learning, especially with distortion it'll pick up every bit of noise, so its great for learning to play clean.... you don't even have to palm mute when sweep picking on acoustics
yeah and mostly because the strings on an acoustic guitar are hard to press...try doing power chord exercises on an acoustic guitar...it will cramp like hell
What model of guitar is that, I know its a PRS but some of the PRSs are expensive and some are cheap in price so I am assuming some of them are of questionable materials.
Damn I need to go see a doctor. There's something wrong with my wrist. It starts hurting when I do this for a while. I also get a weird headache whenever I try to play a song consisting only of power chords which require me to bend the wrist in the same way all the time. Like "in bloom" by nirvana. Anyone had a similar problem?
You just need to relax. Too much tension will give you headaches, like if you tighten your muscles all the way up the arm and on your head. You need to learn to use only your hand muscles.
Playing low is cool you know. If you have guitar in the level of your knees, you will rock hard! But you are right. I used to have guitar almost on my breasts-chest. but I had problem to do proper low E tremolo picking. Used 10s for that, maybe 9 would be better with not so big resistance. I guess my 13-60 in A are floppier but this does not do any problem to me. Damn I have to try some nice 9s too.
Be sure not to look at your freatboard --if you keep staring at your freatboard while playing, your wrist will have to bend badly. The freatboard should be facing the crowd, not yourself.
Finally, read SanctumZero's comment, which can be summed up in one word: relax. That really helps.
he starts it all over again but on the second fret of the e string, this time going down (e->G->B->D->G->A->D->E-> And then start on the third fret of low e string)
The best exercise and stretch for cramping and really, just the foundation for a warm up is literally taking your right hand and stretching your left hands fingers about a dozen different ways.
Nice , I agree, this training (all ROGP) is very nice. I have to try it too. Try this, too. Start with your index on the first fret of E string. Your fingers are on 1 2 3 4 frets. But after you played your fourth, then you will start on E as before with index (1) but you ll move your other fingers to string below (A and so on). I figured it very nice, too. Maybe it also help to others.:-)
Well I think any form of playing is going to help you with certain structures and techniques but lets be realistic, nothing is truly going to stretch out your hands like grabbing your fingers and spreading them as far apart as possible lol.
Another nice trick is some over the counter cortisone cream and rubbing alcohol mixed together.
Put that on your hands each night and I GUARENTEE when you wake up the next morning, your hands are looser, more accurate, faster etc.etc. than ever.
You look more like an awesome slap bass player than guitarist will billy two fist mgee!

SanctumZero 2 years ago
Also, try raising your guitar so that you're playing more ergonomically. The lower your guitar sits, the harder it is on your fretting hand.

@ltsooz:
maybe your guitar is too low, like nght5tlkr wrote on his/her comment.
Rise your guitar so it rests at your waist level or even at your belly level: the more comfortable it feels, the better for your playing.
The arm of your guitar should be the closest to 45° --it helps your hand to go up and down the fretboard easily and stressless.
govorim 2 years ago
Also...
Be sure not to look at your freatboard --if you keep staring at your freatboard while playing, your wrist will have to bend badly. The freatboard should be facing the crowd, not yourself.
Finally, read SanctumZero's comment, which can be summed up in one word: relax. That really helps.
